Abuses upon Tibet, the massacre at Tiananmen Square, Darfur seem to only receive notice when it suits the media or the agenda-toting self-righteous. ….. I believe that, as human beings, we have an obligation to “walk the walk”. If you feel that as one individual, you can’t make a difference; YOUAREWRONG! One’s hard work and diligence in raising responsible, intellectual, and compassionate children may be the most lasting effort in bringing about lasting solutions. The atrocities won’t end because of a protest. There isn’t an overnight/quick fix solution. In our own society here in the US, we look the other way when we don’t want to deal with something negative like drug abuse, the homeless or the mentally ill. Yet, we’ll be the first to scream when horrible things happen outside our own borders!
I take issue with Linda Bauer. My Chinese Family, were educated in the 50’s. Even tho is was not up to the normal Chinese idea of scholarship, —they were learning physics in 5 th grade! When Linda speaks of rural, we think rural here. And there is a rural in China. What she doesn’t speak of are the millions in a countryside China that is using the same tools as were used 6000 years ago. Linda is a fine example of ‘seeing’ only what the Chinese wanted her to see. They have been experts at this with our businessmen and diplomats. If she had asked many I just travel as I wish throughout China, it would have been denied. After all they are the culture with the Trickster Monkey!
And why wouldsn’t the people be gracious? Almost like delightful children, yes?
Hi Ole Crone,
I did not find the people that I encountered in China to be gracious like delightful children.
I simply found them gracious. This was my first visit to China. I had anticipated a careful reserve – polite but guarded. I found an openness that surprised me. My young guides were articulate, intelligent, sophisticated, and opinionated. They did not all sing the same song. I am sure that they were trying to make a good impression. They are tour guides who work daily with American tourist. But when I wandered into a restaurant where English was not spoken, a Chinese customer came over to help me. I left my camera behind in the hotel lobby. It was returned to me with a smile.
My thoughts mirror Whoopie’s on the issue of China, but I might add, the photo taken 19-years ago of the young man standing bravely in front of the tank, a photo now referred to as the “Unknown Rebel”, should inspire ALL of us to stand up for what is right and humane. I see that photo and I am awestruck but then I wonder how a nation came so far in some respects and yet did not move an inch in matters of most importance. sf
I listened to the man tell me that durin’ the cultural revolution his father and mother were both taken away for ‘re-education’. They were both professionals at Universities in the Sciences. They were subjected to the ‘Dunce Hat’ interrogations and badmouthed and hit by their friends and colleagues tryin’ to save themselves.
Did you see this, I asked. “No, my Father didn’t want me to get a bad heart.’
His parents were sent away at different camps for a year. The boy was 8. I said, “What did you do?” He said. “I stayed in our government apartment by myself. My younger Sister and Brother went with relatives.” Yes, the boy cooked for himself, did his own laundering and cleaning, and caring for himself when sick.
And might I add this is the boy of 8,who 30 years later had the Mao buttons. This is the boy who sent the U.S. Agricultural brochures back to China. This is the boy who once he received his U.S. citzenship separated himself from as many non-Chinese U.S.A.ans as he could. Those who had served him, he betrayed, and even set one against the other. Cleverly.
your story is also far away from me, a Chinese living in China! I sorry to say that the story of the 8 years old boy is a tragedy for a period in CHINA, however, NOTNOW!
The era of Mao buttons has gone, and CHINESE people are wise and knowlegable enough to treat the history and truth. It’s undenied that there’re still many truth that need us to search, however, we know, only the union of a nation could make it strong.
Please look at CHINA using the new way, not the “relic” of public issue!
Lin si, I understand your frustration over the generalized comments being made about China as a whole. I have been traveling and researching in China since 1996. Each year I was able to stay for a month or longer. I have been to the large cities and into the Provinces. My US Embassy connections allowed me to go places, by myself, that most foreigners have never seen. One year I was there just before the big women’s conference was to take place. My mother called me from the US to make sure that I was alright. I didn’t know what she was talking about. It was the Anniversary of Tienamen Sq. The US news was showing large crowds in the Square and police all around. I had to laugh when she told me, because I was there at that very time and my friend and I were casually walking through the almost empty Square heading down the block to eat at a Brazilian restaurant. There was no police presence. We were 2 blonde foreigners going out for a meal and a wonderful stroll. I was angry when I returned home and saw the photo’s shown in the US newspapers. They were a complete misrepresentation of the truth. The angry looking Chinese soldier, wasn’t angry, he was a guard outside of the American Embassy. They are required to keep a stiff posture and a continual watchful eye right, front, and left over and over again during the duty day. All the soldiers in that area had the same posture and movements. They weren’t directed at the foreigners. For those who have grown up in the US and believe that we have no censorship in the news reporting, surprise, we’re only shown the press that the politics and politicos of the day want us to read and believe. We are no different than those we criticize for being repressive. We must realize that countries like China, Russia, and the like don’t have a corner on the market of feeding inaccurate propaganda to their citizens. The US is right there with the best of them spewing out inaccuracies for the sake of democracy.
TIBET,TIBET by Patrick French, 2003 by Knoff Publishing. This is a scholarly work done in story of his return to Tibet. It includes the first history of Tibet to present. He talks to people along the way. It is considered ‘the’ book on Tibet.
We hear Chia say that Tibet has always been a part of China. This is not historically so at all and not even close. Tibet and her territories took up almost about 1/4 of all China. Tibet had some of histories greatest warriors in ancient times. A must read I think to be savvy on Tibet and not just the ‘emotions’.
should we Chinese believe in the history in our book or yours? History is written by people, and what we could believe is that what has happened in the recent years. Or everything would be controverial! If you dont deem the history that TIBET shouldnt belong CHINA, i would tell you another history that CHINA once ruled the most of EURO-ASIA continent, north to SIBERIAN, south to INDIA, west to GREEK, east to KOREA in YUANDYNASTY!
WHAT’S HISTORYAFTERALL, can you tell me ?
Dear Lin Si, history is written by the victorious. We will not know whose history of this period will prevail in our lifetime. We prefer to say, for example, that Israel belongs to the Jewish people because they had it once, long ago, but that does not apply to North American and the native people here. There is no moral consistency when it comes to reading history among any people on earth, I think. Which is why the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is so fundamentally important. If all people everywhere respected that, and all governments were obliged to follow it, the world would change overnight. Will that happen? But then, I’m a dreamer. Just imagine.
When I see these words and comments, I really feel that the communication and the understanding between different nations and countries are so initial and significant that we should open our eyes to see the world instead of hearing and learning from some medias.
I don’t know how did you get the information about the Tibet, however,EVERYTHINGSEEMSDIFFERENT with what I have learned in CHINA!
OK, admittedly,I am a Chinese living in Dalian, northeast in CHINA, which is also a beautiful seaside city attracting tourists both domestic ones and overseas every year. I learned news from internet what you would say have been censored by government, and the fact is that I saw the origin pictures which some part of these pictures were “picked” and “cut” by the some western medias. When you say the truth and the violence of these pictures which have been “motified”, then how about the remind parts of these pictures?
It’s true that the protest in 1989 has been hided by the government, and most of Chinese people feel sorry about it. However, please never use the same sight
to see CHINA after 20 years. It is hypocritical to criticize another government’s treatment of its citizens. “The human rights in CHINA” is the target that western coutries and medias to attack the Chinese government. Maybe most of you believe Chinese live in a poor country and enjoy limited freedom and even have
no right to claim their will. I am sorry to say that, I live in a different world in your imagine.
For these 25 years since my born, I experience the tremendous change in China, and the change has astonished the whole world, making other countries fear and believing China would be the potential threaten, maybe one day, would rule the whole world! It’s so ridiculous if USA has not made it for the last 50 years!
Even someone deems that China would be another German in the World War 2! Have you learned the HISTORY in CHINA? Chinese people have undergone the toughest period in the 19th and 20th century and they knew the feelings conlonized and slaughtered by other countries and they swore never let this happen again and the only thing to prevent the history reacting is to make ourselves strong!
EVERYONEWOULDLIKETOSEEITSOWNCOUNTRYSTRONGANDBEAUTIFUL!
Especially, when you see the problems such as pollution and overpopulation in CHINA, we have tried our best to improved it although it is hard for a developing country to do that in a short time! So I want to ask a question when Times River was polluted in the Britain, how many year did people try to make it clean again?
China has given the ONE-CHINA police to control her population since 1980s, which is also your critism on human right, and has acquired well effect and will benefit the whole human being!
I don’t know why there are numerous foreigners travelling China are surprised the development of China and wishing the next tour, while a few saw ONLY the
scenes full of poverty, ignorance and autarchy? DOESANYCOUNTRYCOULDMAKEITSPEOPLELIVINGIN A SAMELEVELLIFESTANDARD?
I am appreciated that Mugsy Peabody holds her opinions that “It’s always interested me that India seemed so much less formidable because of the widespread use of English in the subcontinent. Honestly, how many of us will ever learn Mandarin? And if we can’t even speak, how can we ever understand? ”
I know I COULDNOTCHANGEANYTHING in your viewpoints, perhaps you could believe that I am the puppet of the government!
I just hope that you can learn more about China.
