TOCTOC, I read your postings with great interest. You asked: “Why I wonder, when China is so large, is it necessary for her to insist without any dialogue or compromise to have as her very own possession Tibet and Taiwan?” It reminded me of a question I always asked of our country regarding the 1600’s (and beyond), when our settlers looked across the vast expanse of this great land and decided to extinguish the Native American Indians because “there is not enough.” Buying selling grabbing stealing fighting over real estate is and always has been about “there is not enough.”
The Ole Crone The Ole Crone
I have to admit that I NEVER read these books you are talking about, maybe the reason is what you have criticized on the Mao Regime.
However, I have read other books to reflect the spirit and life of that time by Chinese people. My parents experienced that dark time in China, they told me it was a confusing world as everything was crazy. There are so many reasons for that distorted period, although the government had its responsibility for it, the CUTURALREVOLUTION is not simple attributing to the leaders, the systems and the society regime!
I hope you have learned the history of China between the middle of 19th century to the middle of 20th century which is the most disgraceful period invaded and ruled by other countries, then you would found why so many peope were crazy to admire their Chairman Mao! He gave us freedom from be slaved by other nations and establish the country for Chinese, EVEN he has made a mistake for his people and created an enviroment what you believe is a hell without democracy, his contribution is never forgotten by Chinese people!
Moreover, when the new China was founded, there were too many problems for a new country to deal with, it has no advanced technology, no modern industry, and its people were in the poverty and were illiterate and have been ruled by the Kings and landlords for thousands years. Just such a country like China, what its people should have their belief in, when they had the right to master their life and had their freedom to find happiness and could own their possessions due to the lead of their government?
In CHINESE people’s hearts, the democracy is to share everything with each other and get together to undergo the hardest time in that time!
OK,when times went in to the 20 years ago, China has opened its door to the world for 10 years since 1979, the life in China has changed a lot, both in materials and spirits. A few People have accepted or were accepting the education of the university, learning the world outside and having their thinkings about FREEDOM! They wanted to establish a country full of democracy and could open their mouth freely. It was really such a ideal society that it was difficult to realize in that time.
Have you learned what has happened in the world in 1989 and 1990? The significent thing is “Soviet Union broke down”! If the Chinese government didn’t take measures and even the extreme measures to save its country, then today, China would become the SECONDRUSSIA! I am no deliberate to offense RUSSIA, but we should clearly realize that since the social regime was changed in Russia, its people got the freedom they dreamed while lost their economy as well which they used almost 20 years to recover! Then what it was when China FOLLOWING Russia? I believe that when the society was unstable and its developing stagnate and even go in reverse, especially like China which was in the weak position in the world and has no economic base to guarantee its people, its people would lost their life what they used to own and even no food! Then tell me why we need the democracy? Don’t forget the philosophy “the infrastructure decides the superstructrue”, in another word, there’s no food, there’s no human right!
Ok, look at China at present, you have seen the giant CHANGE in China, especially the materials. We, CHINESEPEOPLE enjoy the life that our parents never imagined! We could decide our life, earn our life on our own merits! Through hard work, we could have the life we dream, a big house, a car and a lover. We also enjoy the freedom in speaking on the internet, to express our opinions and debate some issues about politics and society. OFCOURSE, the democracy we understand is different with you, if some of us oppose the leaders and call them down and have rally in public, it’s still restricted. The reason? In my opinion, people could be influned by others especially when they are young and full of vigor and they could not tell the white and black so that they would be tricked by some individuals or some organizations who have ulterior motives. Take myself for example, when i was in the early of 20s, I found the world is not so beautiful as what I knew, so I was radical and always wanted to do something to prove myself what was right, however, when times fly, I re-learned the world and calmed down to contemplate, then I found I was mature and rational and would follow others blindly, and could read the comments here who has great discrimination to CHINA in peace and wrote this words peacefully. That’s the difference, maybe you think I have been assimilated by the government?
CHINA has been finding its democracy that is suitalbe its culture and its people, and I believe it will find the balance point one day by itself, not the democracy other nation impose on it!
I feel so luck that I live in the world we could communicate with each other using the same language on the internet, and I could try my best to express my opinions differnt from yours to see CHINA.

Now I would say something about Tibet from one point,—not about the history but the future.
China is a multi-nations country, so there are too many complex factors to put its people together. Tibet is just the link of them, if it loses, everything would change. OK, as you question: “Why I wonder, when China is so large, is it necessary for her to insist without any dialogue or compromise to have as her very own possession Tibet and Tiawan?” (Taiwan is another history issue, I would not discuss it this time.), I would reply that if China agrees its independence, then what other nations? EVERY nation in China has its glorious history and culture, however none of them has been great for a long time in the history of CHINA. (you said you have studied CHINESEHISTORYFROMSHANGDYNASTY, then you would know many nations had their periods to rule China, and own their warriors in their times.) Tibet’s indepence would cause chain reaction, then should China allow other nations to be independent? Ok, China is a LARGE country, but if every nation breaks away from China, China would become the little coutry that named BEIJING!

I also appreaciate that you exchange your questions and wonderments with me, I really would like to explain anything you want to know in my knowledge.
By the way, I know there are a lot of gray in between BLACKANDWHITE, maybe sometimes I immature in some questions, I still hold my view that every country has its way to deal with its business.
Lin Si, I listen with an open heart to you so please know that I have this dialogue with you with an open mind. You say, “China is a multi-nations country… . Tibet’s independence would cause chain reaction… if every nation breaks away from China, China would become the little country named Beijing.” During the Vietnam War, Americans were told that we were in Vietnam because if that country fell, communism would take over many other countries in the region. What you call “chain reaction,” they called the domino theory. My question to you is why do you assume that other countries would want their independence from China? From the other countries’ point of view, how would it benefit the other countries to have their independence from China? You say, “In Chinese people’s hearts, the democracy is to share everything with each other…” In a personal relationship if everything is shared with each other, usually no one walks away.
lin si—-“….Ok, China is a LARGE country, but if every nation breaks away from China, China would become the little country that named BEIJING….” ————- That precisely explained what many countries in the world would want to see—- a weak country they could take advantage of from the year 1820 till 1949 - the establishment of The People’s Republic of China. Even China is on the way up every day, China still had Taiwan, Tiananmen, Hong Kong, Tibet, in that order………..to contemplate with.——dancewu(dot)net
I agree with Whoopi. I would also like to add that I think the
Olympic Committee could have made a better choice in locale.
Any country that is known for its horrendous human rights policy
should be banned as a location.
Lin Si, I just want you to know that I love Chinese history, Chinese novels, Chinese pottery, Chinese art,
Chinese food, in fact I love China.
I have lived in Hong Kong, studied Chinese porcelain at
the Chinese University of Hong Kong, raised money for
the purchase of Chinese Paintings for the University Art
gallery, travelled to Beijing, was there at the first opening of a Bhuddist temple and was amazed to watch the reaction of the people around me, saw an exhibition
of western art in Beijing and was amused by the comments asked to me about the paintings, I have been
back stage at the Chinese opera and seen how the make up and costumes were done.
Throughout my travels in China I found the people personable and inquisitive, and admirable for all the
trials they have been through. I saw the warrior army in Xian when it was first opened, but my best memories were of the babies and their red bottoms in the cold, the scary flights from place to place, but, things have changed enormously since I was there. I feel ashamed when meeting a Chinese person who knows and has studied Western culture, Shakespeare and the like, I wonder how many Westerners know anything about Chinese culture, paintings, and so forth.
I actually have original Chinese Art in my home as to paintings, caligraphy, and porclein. I have quite a bit of jade. I have 8 pairs of silver chop sticks and 6 other pair of fancy ones. All given to me by Chinese friends, including pieces of jewlrey from the autominous regins. Including Tibet. And I have several books on Chinese history and I have my own Chop also, and ink of course. I have the art brushes of varying styles. I have several friends very versed in Chinese history. It’s the politicians I worry about, and the corporations from both sides.
But as to the Olympics I don’t think they should be boycotted. Too many hard workin’ and sacrificin’ athletes all over the world who deserve to perform without interference.
After the closing ceremony if people and countries want to object with signs as to China’s unwillingness to go to the table —fine.
I fear that China is just as capable today of another T-Square as they were in ‘88. Often with change nothing changes.
Which China? The government of the People’s Republic? The people born in China? Our idea of China? I think it is invaluable (and crucial) to distinguish in our speech (and thought and action) between them.
I presume when people speak of China, being ‘the same as it ever was’, that they are referring to the Government and not to the people.
Because as we all know, from our own country, they can be vastly different animals.
I was going to tell a story about when I went to China, in the midst of Hong Kong, being returned to China.
But after all this reading, my widdle brain is just too fried. I did find the Chinese people to be fascinating and many-sided. The country could be felt, to be in the midst of the changing. But the people, were like Roman Candles, poised to fly! And I believe it will take time for the people’s influence to become a major factor. I am hopeful that their government, as well as ours, will begin to reflect it’s people, exponentially!
What a wonderful conversation and educational experience reading these posts has been. I live in Hawaii and marvel at the influence of its Chinese immigrant population still growing steadily since the second half of the 19th century. The benefits are overwhelmingly positive based on what I know after living here for 40 years. One of my good friends immigrated here from Hainan in 1998 and acquired Master’s degrees in Public Administration and Business Administration in 3 years. His wife immigrated in 2000 and now has an MBA as well. They are now in NYC in a small apartment with a treasured daughter and dreaming of starting their own business. Thanks to 9/11 they are only now getting their resident alien status. The U.S. in fortunate to have them, and I am fortunate to call them friends. I would tell today’s generation to learn Mandarin, and if I had money to invest it would be in China. The biggest problem in Tibet from what I have read is the influx of Chinese population (officially encouraged) and the repression of Tibetan culture.
I love this website — it is a privilege to post my opinions here.
Ni Hao, Lin Si,
Xie Xie for you comments and insights on China.
I agree that dialogue is important and your voice added dimension to this series of comments.
I am interested in learning about you county, its culture, history, and current events.

First of all, million thanks for Mary Wells post, she is the one not associate politics with sports, also the one know how to respect other countries.
There are several points I want to share with everybody:
People needs to be rathional.
Do you guys really think by letting Tibetans get free and be ruled under lamas will tibet become ‘democratic’? That prospect reminds me of Iraq. Let me remind you of some BASIC facts about Tibet. Before communism regime, 95% of Tibetans were slaves dictated by the 5% blue bloods and lamas.Slaves were killed alive and traded like animals. There are still many slave-skin drums in the Palaces of Lhasa, go there and you will see how poorly and inhuman those lamas treated their people.
I’m not saying that in favor of CPC.
But those who fled to India with Dalai were either monks or blue bloods who wants their previliges back. That’s why they want ‘a free Tibet’ so ardently. They want a Tibet in their own hands.
Do you think Tibetans will be happy under their rules again?
Read and see more, and if possible, come to Tibet to and talk to Tibetans. Until you know what they really wants.Western media is frequently biased and always portray an image of its choosing rather than reporting fairly on fact. just as media in China.
You have no rights to bla or attack anyone , any country unless you have truly seen or known what happened there, without discriminational eyes.
