Does anyone remember that one young man standing in front of the tank with his country’s flags in front of the tanks in the square? That will always be my memory of China. On the web you can find the minutes of the WTO negotiations between China and the United States and the problems we were having even then when favored nation status was granted. I wonder why we felt we would change them…No civilization has ever changed China…they fall deep into its deep, magnificent beauty the dark unfortunately choaking abyss. It’s my next language after Arabic.
Sharron—- I was born there and raised there untill high school graduation, and still have problem of the Chinese language. Good luck to you…..dancewu(dot)net
When you visit China, you take off your diamonds and put them in your pocket. They seem too out of place, perhaps too shiny for such a plain, simple spot in the world. A recent report describes the level of resolve among the Chinese people: Farmers in the Hunan province called the leaders in the capitol city of Bejing recently to report the lack of honey bees necessary to pollinate the flowers needed to produce food. Bejing called them back and suggested that if the bees aren’t doing it, they should pollinate the flowers themselves. The Hunan province population came together, cut bamboo pencils, stuck feathers from chickens on one end of the sticks, got ladders and climbed the trees, pollinating one blossom at a time with the feathers. Some of the Chinese people pollinate almost 30 trees a day. although bees pollinate about 100 trees in a day. No matter. They will continue to do the work, up on the ladders one blossom at a time, until the bees return. The United States has also lost many of our bees. i see no ladders or feathers in our future.
I appreciate that so many people would like to listen to me and want to know more about CHINA, I hope if I use the unsuitable words and sentences to express my ideas with the emotion, it won’t hurt anybody. What I want to do is to tell what is happening in China and what our life is now.
Dear Mugsy Peabody, thanks very much that you could open your minds to accept different culture in other countries and respect their people. As you have said, we have few ways to change the behavior of our own government. Although sometimes I doubt the way of my government, I still believe that something would be changed and we will have a bright future.
By the way, Chinese people, still take the credit of their government, including me. AND I really love the words you have changed from MS.
Dear Frances Merritt, thanks for your attention of China, I hope I could give you a new scene about China today, not the OLDTIMES. You are right that the business has been developing so fast that we Chinese have to speed our pace to follow it, and military is also stronger than before which made other countries fear. Besides, our minds also accept the culture of western countries and enrich our knowledge about the world. Chinese have open their eyes to look at the world.
Dear George Wu, I am happy to meet you in this SITE, and hold the same opinion with me about China. Tibet and Taiwan belong to China, like the California belongs America, nothing could seperate them. Our government Always hopes to solve the problems in peace, or we should have taken Taiwan back. About Tibet, in Chinese eyes, it is a province of China, and we are help developing their economy and pretecting their culture for decades years, one of the most important thing is road works from Beijing to Lhasa.
Dear AB, i REALLY hope one day, we would have a chance to sit togeter at the dinning table, enjoy the CHINESECUISINE, and talking something about the cultures respectively. As one member of the new generation, I learn the culture of your country because I want to learn more about the worlds, including the culture, thinkings and so on. We like your movies which own the advanced technology to make special feeling when we enjoy them ; your NBA games which prove that once you have a dream then make it; your fast food which save our time to put ourselves into the work. However, we’re still proud our movies which reflect the life and the thinkings in 21st centuries; our OLYMPIC games which show the NEWBEIJING, NEWCHINA to people all around world; our tradional food which are so delicious that I couldn’t help mouth-watering too!
I hope when people enjoy the Chinese cuisine, they would be courious of its culture and would like to learn it!
Lin si—- Glad to see that you mentioned my name. I am so used to no one ever cared to bother to pay attention what I had to say, whether architecturally, or politically. Since you mentioned the railroad built recently to connect from Lhasa to Beijing, I had a prototype housing design over the railroad to cover the noise, similar to the GREATWALLOFCHINA, from Tibet to Beijing. If you want, please go to my web-site, to see the sketches I did many years ago. ( the ones that my Irish son-in-law liked very much), hopefully it will get built before I died. I am already 71 years old, China will need good people like you to be built into a strong country, one that NOONEEVERTRIEDTOTAKEADVANTAGEOFANYMORE!————-www.dancewu.net
Chinese people always take measures on their merits to sovle the problems with dilligence and intelligence. We could do what we could do the deal with issues. Arificial pollinating, is just one of the examples.
I hate that we have people in the US that are unemployed because we have taken our factories to China. My daughter can not believe the trouble I go to not to buy made in China products. I am going to lose this battle as it is harder and harder. I still find a few things at Walmarts but how can they buy made in the USA if our factories keep moving to China and other countries. I use to love hallmarks but they really have sold out . I feel they have a choice to keep their factories in the USA. What are we thinking? Why would we buy wheat from China? The dog food that with tainted wheat killed dogs and there was no reason for this. Lead paint on the toys that we buy for our children and grandchildren should have put a stop to our buying anything from China but no we continue to sell our souls.
Stella Lei, you certainly have a propaganda view of Tibet. Yes, there was corruption within the religion, but hardly close to what you state, and not nearly as bad as in China even today.
China is ‘managing’ Tibet by emigration. They have flooded Tibet with Chinese people to dilute the culture. Shops and skills and professions of any quality are owned and operated by the Chinese. Tibetans have almost no rights to education, decent shelter, or medical care. The Tibetans famous for barley have almost no barley fields anymore as the Chinese used the land for other uses in agri to meet their own needs. Young Tibetan girls and young women are used as prostitutes for the Chinese men. The Chinese in Tibet have served the Chinese agenda only.
The point is like Iraq or Afghanistan or anyplace else they should be allowed to govern themselves if this is what they wish as long as they are not hurting other people. If a country wants to be born and managed as to religion, fine, as long as they don’t force it upon others. If a country wants to be a democracy, fine as long as they don’t forxce it on others.
To our Chinese friends here as well as presently in China —you need to understand it is the We The People of the world that must manage our governments morally or the sky is going to fall on all of us.
Having taught English as a second language to mainland Chinese in the late 80’s and the 90’s and having lived within a Chinese culture for 12 years and understand the language acquition of English spoken and written, I’m not convined that Lin Si is from China at all, presently. Patterns are not fitting together for a Chinese living in China and learning English there.
However, China is an important topic because the Chinese and the rest of the world have myths about one another that are not true. And to build a safe world for all the people rather than for corrupt governments and corporations isn’t the effort to understand one another worth the struggle?
I’ve heard the stories from my mainland adopted Chinese family: The Tibetans are lazy and dirty. Their view were so closed they missed out on the opportunity to enjoy my Tibetan friends. Wouldn’t even go to their home: Dirty dirty, they were sure.
To compare California to Tibet is silly. California was over 200 years ago when there were no means for communication and fast travel for the people of our country to see what is going on. As I stated before Iraq and Viet Nam are examples of modern times that U.S.A.ans do have the means and call their government to responsibility. Tibet and Tiawan are today. Iraq and Afghanistan are today. Because of communication tools and search abilities, —We The People of The World can say, STOP
For Mr. WU to mention the Rape of Nanking as being a terrible thing, is true, by the hands of Japanese. What the mainland Chinese need to know is the Chinese did the very same behavior in Tibet! And the Chinese well know what the Japanese did in China! Do I need to say more? Your government has and is doing the same thing in Tibet!
And those calling themselves Chinese didn’t answer my earlier question. Why is it do you think, that today and the great size of China, they need to also possess Tiawan and Tibet?
As to the new found quick wealth in China and many Chinese getting very rich fast and many many more becoming terribly impoverished (as here also) remember your Buddhist’s roots: Everything is temporary. This also will pass.
Be honest China wants Tibet for it’s natural resources. Took their forests and want their many minerals. The everyday Chinese people need to understand their govt. is just as crooked as any other and will use who they have to in order to get what they want for themselves. It is up to the new Chinese mainland people to make sure your country is doing the right thing by your own people and other people. If you don’t and bad times come you could end up as when Mao reigned, again.
Tibetans are not Chinese and I’ve never seen a Tibetan who looked like a Chinese. They seem to have more Semetic or Med. attributes than Asian.
Chinese need to get over themselves! Like we have had to do. You are not the center of the Universe, we all are.
Whomever mentioned Divide and Conquer as being European is not correct. Divide and Conquer, Promise and Delay among many others are ancient Chinese warring strategies.
For Chinese who want to read more as to Tibet I suggest the book: TIBET, TIBET by Patrick French. The sautor is either a Brit or Aussie. Can’t remember which, and is considered as one of the World’s best scholars on Tibet.
Again I think China today is the same as China of the T. Square time, politically. And if U.S.A.ans want to see what we look like to others when we are accused of being arrogant —just look East to the ‘new’ Chinese leadership. And if we want to look to see what we look like when accused by others of being decadant and shallow, just look East. Unfortunately the ‘new Chinese’ that are making a buck are as obnoxious as we are. I had hoped for so much more.
“I’ve heard the stories from my mainland adopted Chinese family: The Tibetans are lazy and dirty. Their view were so closed they missed out on the opportunity to enjoy my Tibetan friends. Wouldn’t even go to their home: Dirty dirty, they were sure.”
You are right, many Chinese people would have the impressions that the Tibetans are “lazy”, ” dirty”, “poverty”.”secret” and so on! What’s the reason? Because we learned too few things about them! ANDITCANBEALSOEXPLAINEDWHYSOMANYFOREIGNERSHAVETHESIMILARRECOGNIZATIONOFCHINESE!!!
It’s about Communication! Tibet has its own culture and because of the isolution of natural terrain, we, as the plain people know little thing about it, especially we are in the south and north of CHINA. SEVERALYEARSAGO, people only visit to Lhasa by plane! However, with the transport has been improved, and there is a railway from BEIJING to Lhasa, many people could travel to TIBET, and learn more things about it!
It also can be compared with the outside world to CHINA, only to travel and experience the life of China, you could know what you thought before would a mistake!
========================================
You said you have been China for 12 years in 1980s and 1990s, and I hope you could have a chance to return CHINA to see what has changed in last decade. It is really different, the development of China is leaps and bounds, of course including the spirits and concepts!
Some of the discussions and articles I’ve read about China suggest that the people are becoming more independent because of the economy in China. The people are first time homeowners, car owners and are taking vacations. Their children work hard from the day they are born to acquire a good education and can move up the ladder economically in society.
There seems to be a changing of the guards within the government, Old China government and New China. Things are going forward slowly, but it will happen. I think the Tibetans know this and that is why they push forward with the protests for human rights. The Tibetans use the Olympics for there global stage. Where the torch goes the human rights protestors help them be heard around the world.
I think the education of the Chinese people and the economic standing they are aquiring gets them closer to freedom and this can only help the Tibetans cause. The Chinese gets closer and closer away from suppression towards more freedom because of the Chinese success. With this will come empathy for the Tibetans and some resolution for co-existance. Patience is what the Tibetans have and in the end they will get what they want and make China better for it.
Americans should think about patience and going forward in peace, like the Tibetans. Peace and diplomacy. Let Tiananmen Square be an example of what should not be done.
“Americans should think about patience and going forward in peace, like the Tibetans. Peace and diplomacy. Let Tiananmen Square be an example of what should not be done.”
Thank you, Jackie Celi. We, Chinese people never let Tiananmen Square not be done. The world is transparent, however, we never get what we want. Take Tibet issue for example, what we know in China and what you know in America are different, however, there is only one truth.
When The Ole Crone compared Tibet Issue with the Rape of Nanking, I was shocked and almost angry! ITISNEVERTHETRUTHTHATCHINESEMILITARYSLAUGHTER! Please give us evidence, I ‘m begging!
We know how advanced your spy satelites that even the number of a car could be discerned! Then why they show the pictures of the SLAUGHTER? LETTHEWHOLEWORLDKNOWHOWCRUELCHINESE?!
What you have known is from the media and internet, and the description from other people. You may say you have seen the pictures on the internet and they told you the truth, but do you know most of this pictures are photoed by CHINESE and are “cut” and “modified” by some foreign media?
Please tell me where you get your information, thanks very much!
Lin Si ….. It has been about 24 hours since I first read your commentaries on WOWOWOW. The first thing that I wanted to do his morning was to see if this dialog had continued through to today! I am profoundly inpressed with your abilities of expression, directness and sincerity. I hope that if you desire to become an author, that you use yesterday’s and today’s dialog as the Foreword. Xia Xia!
It’s OK, I could learn what you mean! Thank you for your advice, to be a author is my dream since I was a little girl, however, maybe I would be an Chemical Engineer first, — I am a postgraduate now and major in Chemical Engineering.
I knew the communication is very importance and I hope I could show my opinion clearly suitably with my English to let more people learning what CHINA is. It would make me appreciating!
谢谢!(THANKS!)
