Lori-
Not all liberals are bad seriously. D just seems to freak out when people stand up to her, call her on things or just have a different opinion. Have you notice that when challenged with logic and facts she either insults people or backs away.
For me the idea about “being liberal” is to be open to various opinions and to be open to discussion.
There is not one woman that thinks the same on every topic from A to Z, you know. Just hang tight Lori and thank you for speaking up. It’s all good. I may not agree with everyone however I do like a healthy discussion. Conservatives aren’t bad. I have really good friends who are conservative with really big hearts, you know. Hey- Have a Happy Thanksgiving and just continue to be you Lori.
After just reading ALICE, the biography of Teddy Roosevelt’s daughter, Alice Roosevelt Longworth, who set the whole 90 years of a life well led on end, I am afraid that Laura Bush, nice as she is, will not have a page-turner.
I admire respectable First Ladies with lovely manners befitting the office,
but when I am reading I want a past life that will keep me up reading half the night. Once you have read ALICE, all books on presidents’ wives take a downhill slide — that is, unless you are an historian that “wants the facts”, dull or not. I know, I know - one must not judge a book by its cover, but somehow I think I am pretty safe here.
How is it ‘nice’ to advocate for going into illegal, unconstitutional wars that the entire world and all major church leaders and anyone with 1/2 a brain was against?
How is it ‘nice’to be married to a man who is for torture and against the US Constitution, who let the people in New Orleans drown while he was cutting birthday cake, who read “My Pet Goat’ while NYC and WDC were under attack, who made the US into a terrorist, rogue state, and on and on?
In my book there is nothing ‘nice’ about Laura Bush. She gave a very foul, unnice, no class ‘Desparate Housewife’ speech and then laughed her head off at her moron husband’s making light of no WMD’s….the lie that put over one million in their early graves, displaced 2.3M and bankrupted our nation.
Laura Bush is a moral coward and a hypocrite. A woman who could be married to GWB has serious disconnection with her own humanity.
Suzanne, how do you learn if your selections are based on the moral perfections of the subjects? I don’t approve of Hitler, but I’ve read a biography of him. I don’t approve of George W. Bush, but do believe he has had more books wriiten about him than any other sitting president, and I’ve read many of them. Guess I’m morally bankrupt since I read about the morally bankrupt. and I love to read about mafia molls.
Peace and grace
Beth, I don’t need to read any fictions produced by the tacky Bushes anymore than a member of the French Resistance needed to read something written by their occupying Nazis.
And now our occupied country has been set free…and like the French in 1945 I am listening to ‘La Vie en Rose’ over and over and celebrating the return of my country, not prolonging hell by reading about what I’ve lived through and endured. And waiting for Jan 20th and getting the stench of the Bush/Cheney mob out of the WH. As Paul Krugman wrote….the Monster Era is over. I’m celebrating it…not reading its main moll’s fiction.

Brava, Suzanne. Your most compelling arguments are always the ones you express in a civil tone with a biting edge. You know, of all the books written about Bush during his administrations, I’m not aware of any written in a positive tone.
Thank you for sharing the celebratory essence of Ms. Edith Piaf.

Carmel-by-the-Sea—You rock! I agree wholeheartedly with everything you said. Thank you.

Suzanne,
Thank you for the link…………….Love that song and especially the voice.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Beth, I think you and I share the same (Suzanne may call it morbid) curiosity about the lives and motivations of those outside our sphere. Sometimes their stories chill me to the bone. Other times, they inspired me or offer a new perspective on history or my own life. As for Laura Bush, I’ve resisted the urge to judge her based upon her choice of husband. I must admit, I don’t see the two of them together. Perhaps her book will answer some questions for me in that regard.
I’ve said this before, in regards to myself, and to all other women, staying with a man for the money is akin to being a prostitute - therefore, intolerable for a sensible, intelligent, responsible woman (more so with children). Laura Bush is no different. She made her choice back in Midland, it was a matter of public record what she went through, so no, I do not respect her, nor would I read anything she wrote. Giving credence in any way to such hypocrites and worse, another woman who only further diminished the role of women in America, deserves nothing monetary or otherwise from me, in my little corner of the world.
