Question of the Day | 02/26/2009 11:00 pm

In honor of Liz Smith, what's the one piece of gossip you have to share?

The Grande Dame of Dish bid adieu to her legendary New York Post column this week. In her honor, Candice Bergen, Sheila Nevins, Cynthia McFadden, Mary Wells, Marlo Thomas and a few more wOw women try their hands at the gossip game … and invite you to do the same

Liz Smith's Ideal Dinner Date? Cynthia McFadden Has the Scoop

Here’s a juicy bit: something Liz has tried to keep secret … she’s an intellectual. Celebrities don’t interest her all that much. Check her reading table: piled high with biography and literary fiction. She reads history with the depth and breadth of a scholar. Who’s her idea of the ideal dinner partner? Not Clooney or Pitt (though she can make do), but Yale University Professor Harold Bloom, American author, intellectual and literary critic. Author of the Western Canon. Now you know.

Joan Juliet Buck Shares a Secret Plot

There is a plot. Many are in on it. Falling cranes in New York City last year, crashing planes this past month, the meltdown of the world economy, the wall on the West Bank, the coming of 2012, and the secret, hurried building of top-of-the-line condo developments in private stretches of Antarctica.

I can’t say much more, but — does Armageddon ring a bell?

Mary Wells

Mary Wells Dishes on Liz Smith's Secret Boyfriend

Liz’s boyfriend is a lot younger than she is. A lot. He’s very cute and very smart, but he’s too young to buy her a drink and she can’t take him to the real Oscars. Only a few of us know him and we sneak him into our parties. When he’s a little older he’ll be a thriller, though.

Marlo Thomas: Keep This to Yourself

I heard that the Post let Liz Smith go. But don’t repeat it. I’m sure it’s just a silly rumor.

Sheila Nevins

Sheila Nevins and the Legend of Liz Smith

Why are we wOw dames making such a fuss about Liz’s so-called firing? Liz is fired up now and has simply moved on and away from people too stupid to recognize that you can’t budge or topple a landmark. Historic landmarks are recognized only by those who know quality. Dopes don’t get it. You can’t move the Statue of Liberty (tourists won’t come) or the Brooklyn Bridge (people will fall into the water). And so Liz remains as always a boldface name of her own making, a statue decrying the emptiness of anonymity and glorious glow of presence, a bell that rings "take notice." I’m Lizzie. Our Liz will always be heard from loud and clear. The secret is she has not been fired, she has been exalted to legend status and she reigns untouchable.

Julia Reed Goes Straight to the Source

I agree with Candice that ONLY LIZ knows all — and knows how to disseminate it with great style and class. Since I left New York, I have been forced to go online to the Post to get her column. Now I can go straight to wOw!

She doesn’t go to church because good Christian people would tell her that her judgmentalism is unacceptable, so it’s best to hide away behind her "certainty."

No Tony…there is no coin flip. Sexuality is a trait like any other….Just like eye color, hair color etc. I know something like epigenetics is probabally too complex for you to understand, and (given your posts) I take it you don’t go in for intellectual pursuits; but—if you are interested—look up the Nova episode "Ghost in Your Genes". Try mot to get a brain cramp watching while watching it….

My post was written in haste, without the use of spell check. I do—however—qualify for mensa, although I haven’t joined. I don’t guess I’ll have to worry about running into the likes of you (even though your comments are so clever) if I do become a member…

Now Melanie…. why would you tease the weak minded? He actually thinks that was a true statement.

I know! As i re-read his vitriol I am reminded of a quote from playwrite Joe Orton (another of ‘my kind’): "Madness, like vomit, is much more an inconvenience to the passerby."

No, wOw, you don’t get to delete my comment but not the one above.  Elaine has said hateful things about gay people over and over again and you have to delete hers if you delete my response to her.  Anyone can feel however the hell they want, but hatespeak is, among other things, a violation of your wOw commandments, so either remove the bigoted pronouncements of this self-professed "christian" or leave my responses to it.  Otherwise, I will proceed with making your allowing a person to consistently post anti-gay posts on this site and remove responses to that hate speak a public matter.  As you probably know by now, I can certainly follow through on my intention.  Either put a stop to her bigoted pronouncements against gays, or I will.

Mugsy…clap clap clap.  I love my God.  God loves all of us.  He forgives everyone if they believe and they ask.  One can be gay and he will still love you to put it bluntly.  There are many hypocritical so-called christians who are anti-gay and if you don’t believe me, do a yahoo search using the words "hypicrtical christians talk about gays".   My very religious grandmother, who could quote bible verse word for word, always said there are those who say they spout the word of God…and they do it all day long but what they think is the gospel isn’t, then they go to the tavern on Saturday night and get roaring drunk and then these same persons go to church on Sunday to repent and talk about the persons who are not in church and therefore are not Christians.  Grandma always said these were hypocritical bigots who claim to be the epitome of christians and I have found she was so right.

I am not gay but I have friends who are and I will stand behind you and others on this issue.

Mugs,

You’re first sentence is confusing at best. Where is the Hurtful language? I just finished stating that ‘I was glad one of you didn’t kill themselves’ I’d say that’s a rather kind message!

" I just finished stating that ‘I was glad one of you didn’t kill themselves’."

"One of you"?  Guess you don’t see hear the condescention in that and think you are just being Christian.  Sounds like something Betty Bowers would say.

Elaine, do you recall the day you made the *choice* to be straight?  White?  Female?    No…I didn’t think so.  The same goes for Mugsy and my brother and all other gay people.  NOT a choice, but y’all can’t seem to grasp that concept.
