Question of the Day | 02/26/2009 11:00 pm

In honor of Liz Smith, what's the one piece of gossip you have to share?

The Grande Dame of Dish bid adieu to her legendary New York Post column this week. In her honor, Candice Bergen, Sheila Nevins, Cynthia McFadden, Mary Wells, Marlo Thomas and a few more wOw women try their hands at the gossip game … and invite you to do the same

Candice Bergen: Liz Smith Is the One and Only

The only recognized responsible gossip writer is Liz Smith and she, and only she, is qualified to disseminate the dish.

Liz Smith's Ideal Dinner Date? Cynthia McFadden Has the Scoop

Here’s a juicy bit: something Liz has tried to keep secret … she’s an intellectual. Celebrities don’t interest her all that much. Check her reading table: piled high with biography and literary fiction. She reads history with the depth and breadth of a scholar. Who’s her idea of the ideal dinner partner? Not Clooney or Pitt (though she can make do), but Yale University Professor Harold Bloom, American author, intellectual and literary critic. Author of the Western Canon. Now you know.

Joan Juliet Buck Shares a Secret Plot

There is a plot. Many are in on it. Falling cranes in New York City last year, crashing planes this past month, the meltdown of the world economy, the wall on the West Bank, the coming of 2012, and the secret, hurried building of top-of-the-line condo developments in private stretches of Antarctica.

I can’t say much more, but — does Armageddon ring a bell?

Mary Wells

Mary Wells Dishes on Liz Smith's Secret Boyfriend

Liz’s boyfriend is a lot younger than she is. A lot. He’s very cute and very smart, but he’s too young to buy her a drink and she can’t take him to the real Oscars. Only a few of us know him and we sneak him into our parties. When he’s a little older he’ll be a thriller, though.

Marlo Thomas: Keep This to Yourself

I heard that the Post let Liz Smith go. But don’t repeat it. I’m sure it’s just a silly rumor.

Sheila Nevins

Sheila Nevins and the Legend of Liz Smith

Why are we wOw dames making such a fuss about Liz’s so-called firing? Liz is fired up now and has simply moved on and away from people too stupid to recognize that you can’t budge or topple a landmark. Historic landmarks are recognized only by those who know quality. Dopes don’t get it. You can’t move the Statue of Liberty (tourists won’t come) or the Brooklyn Bridge (people will fall into the water). And so Liz remains as always a boldface name of her own making, a statue decrying the emptiness of anonymity and glorious glow of presence, a bell that rings "take notice." I’m Lizzie. Our Liz will always be heard from loud and clear. The secret is she has not been fired, she has been exalted to legend status and she reigns untouchable.

Julia Reed Goes Straight to the Source

I agree with Candice that ONLY LIZ knows all — and knows how to disseminate it with great style and class. Since I left New York, I have been forced to go online to the Post to get her column. Now I can go straight to wOw!

Kermie, my screen reader can’t ‘find’ the link on the Wowowow masthead any more, so it seems - the links to the wowowow matriarchs have taken precedence. I hope the link helps you travel over there.

C Jay—Thank you.  Yes, I was looking for the link on the masthead, also.  I think Changing the World deserves precedence over some of the other categories.  I am glad Dora’s surgery went well.

Email I received from Dora today - in tears about "this:" "Thank you so much for posting on my behalf and all the good wishes and healing-curing armies mean the world to me!  I’m spending a lovely quiet sunny afternoon at home, it’s a gorgeous day here and I just breathe and smile at the beauty that surrounds me.
I just realized that I won’t be able to e-mail you for a few days, my best friend, Marcie will be with me all through this and I will ask her to e-mail you on my behalf if that’s ok with you.
Love, Dora" Such a sweetie. Thanks all - I send her your posts.

Liz.  I just checked in with the girls now to find that you are no longer at the Post!  OMG.  This can only mean one thing.  Please tell me you are planning to move to Vancouver too, to liven the place up a bit!  Your fan always, AP

Yes!  I haven’t been on these pages much since the cyber-bullies landed via the media role named Ann Coulter.   I plugged in Merrell G but came up with nothing.

After thinking for a week, what I would write on the front page of my own newsletter, after reading these comments, writing about the Garden of Eden was easy! Thanks ladies for all the positive and negative, it turned the lightbulb on again!

I certainly have many - but one would stop our national adoration of someone from the late 90s, who’s still speeding around … having duped the public, and "others" who don’t check facts.

In the 80s, I closely observed a very high level hero circle the wagons to avoid telling the truth, comply with federal law, let cohorts take it on (to stop a fraudunet "charity."  I was dumb struck, but had to tell the truth myself, anyway, and did, but more so I was left with the most profound respect for 2 board chairs in America…who helped me.

Sheila Nivens’ comments regarding the "firing" of one of my all-time favorives, Liz Smith, was right on. Nothing more to be added on that subject.  It would be so lovely to share a glass of wine with you, ladies.

Kat, I’m not certain I’m following you accurately, but that would be freshing, imho. I’m so tired of staged media. I’m re-reading my Penguin Classics! ;-))
