Question of the Day | 01/12/2009 11:00 pm

Given the economic climate, should Obama and his administration downscale when planning this unprecedented Inauguration?

Joan Ganz Cooney Gives Obama the OK to Spend

I don’t know the answer to that question. There are so many people in the country — with many going to Washington — who want to celebrate the historic occasion, that maybe it’s OK to be little excessive.

Liz Smith on How Obama Should Have Spent the Inaugural Cash

I can’t wait for it to be over. I consider it a delay in forging ahead and I honestly feel it would have been great for Obama to have offered the money it will all cost to some needy charity or group of persons. I know people need to celebrate but not to the tune of millions. The economic climate demands a downscale, I believe.

Judith Martin Predicts a 'Tasteful' Inauguration

From the way people are talking now, you would think that it is only in hard times that ostentation is vulgar. The Obamas appear to have taste, so I am assuming that the Inauguration will be a dignified ceremony followed by a jolly national bash, rather than a display of wealth and privilege — and that it would be tasteful even if he were coming to office in prosperous times.

Mary Wells Hopes the Angry Don't Tune In

They are corny, aren’t they? From an old world. America can’t afford a corny old-world celebration (even though Obama is an idea worth celebrating). What will the First Lady will wear? Is that exciting? Going from one celebration or star-hosted party to another to see who is there — is that a thrill? Think of all the people in the world who don’t know how they will care for their families now who will see all that boring old-fashioned nonsense on television – and will know how expensive it must be. Many are angry already. I hope they don’t watch.

Dona…I can say that at first I was skeptical about this b/c they are bringing in extra and I mean extra security then any other inauguration which is more money but you putting things the way you have, makes sense. yes it is giving people jobs and money in their pockets. My husband will be there working for 3 days and its all Over time for him so that is good for us!!!

As usual, right on, Dona. Lets party hardy for a few days and then get down to business. I plan to be glued to my TV for days, enjoying all the people and all the hooplah, and especially the Inaugural address that will encourage us to raise our spirits, believe in America again and get moving.

The problems of this time will find resolve in our future, but this one space of time will be viewed as it is in the future. A moment of time, let it be an occasion of joy that the future will enjoy in a timeless manner. Blessings, Linda

I second Belinda. This is a historic moment, time for the majority of the world to celebrate the end of 8 years in BushCo-Hell and a new era. This is the best ‘commerical’ for America we will ever produce. Party On!!! I’ve got the champagned on ice.

This inauguration is a time of hope for the country so it should be celebrated. Our new president is facing four tough years cleaning up after the last administration. Let him savor this moment because he’s earned it.

To quote David E Sanger from his new book “The Inheritance”: George Bush’s “foreign policy has left us less admired by our allies, less feared by our enemies and less capable of convincing the rest of the world that our economic and political model is worthy of emulation.” Yeah I’d say Obama has a tough row to hoe.

Frank, Did you see David Sanger on Charlie Rose last night ? Part 2 tonight. Oh yes, a tough row to hoe indeed, but Hillary is doing an excellent job at the hearings. Maybe we’ll be able to undo some of the damage.

Hi kiddo- it’s going to take a long time to undo all the damage the Bushies created—it was speculated today that Gitmo may take a year to close even though an executive order goes into effect nearly immediately to that effect. So, long term solutions are what needs to be on people’s minds not miracles.

Laura Bush is buying gold trimmed dinnerware for the White House right before she leaves that costs half a million. That bothers me much more than money being spent on a celebration that more people in this country want to attend than ever before for any other President. And isn’t it a little late to be worrying about this now? It would be costing more to stop these things than to be having them.

Thank you Sandbee . I was wondering if someone would mention those dishes. Reminded me of the dishes Nancy Reagan bought in the middle of the Savings and Loan mess. I would love if it the entire country could have one big hoot of a party . Also, this entire topic smacks of a non issue that someone thought up just to bring more negativity to the table.

I believe that if Obama wants stuffed pastry with 3 different seafood. And then the Main course then the desert is simple an apple cake (I think). He could have his Chef make it for him any time while he is in office. I want to see Elect President Obama to make some sort of sacrifice. He is talking about taxing Medicare, Social Security, and to raise the taxes from payroll tax. I will fall in all three between my Husband and I. I want Elect President Obama to have fun but at the same time he could make a small sacrifice to show that he has compation for those of us who have to scale everything down to the bare minimum. I voted for Elect President Obama (7 days) so he should have a party, but he could also scale somethings back.

Caroline, the sacrifice he has to make is political and personal in that what he is inheriting from George Bush is major and may very well set back his aims and promises. That to me is a major sacrifice—the inability to accomplish your heart’s dream because of the fiascos you predecessor has left you.

I have not been following what the festivities will be. I am extremely happy with this historical event. At first I thought that if they are going overboard then it is indeed in bad taste seeing the way the economy is sliding more and more. But Dona put the right spin on it. People by the thousands are flocking to DC, lots of work for the travel bus companies, think of the hotels booked to the max well into VA, think of all the restaurants and street vendors who will make a few bucks more than usual. The list goes on and on. Made me think of a friend of mine, she is going, she has no reservations , not too much cash on hand but she with 3 girl friends are bringing snacks, drinks, and an enormous spirit to see this event.. Is anyone going to tell her that she can’t afford this trip? No way. We , her friends, are digging deep in our pockets to help her have a great time. It will be a boost and a celebration. The hard work will be there the next morning.
