Question of the Day | 01/12/2009 11:00 pm

Given the economic climate, should Obama and his administration downscale when planning this unprecedented Inauguration?

Joan Ganz Cooney Gives Obama the OK to Spend

I don’t know the answer to that question. There are so many people in the country — with many going to Washington — who want to celebrate the historic occasion, that maybe it’s OK to be little excessive.

Liz Smith on How Obama Should Have Spent the Inaugural Cash

I can’t wait for it to be over. I consider it a delay in forging ahead and I honestly feel it would have been great for Obama to have offered the money it will all cost to some needy charity or group of persons. I know people need to celebrate but not to the tune of millions. The economic climate demands a downscale, I believe.

Judith Martin Predicts a 'Tasteful' Inauguration

From the way people are talking now, you would think that it is only in hard times that ostentation is vulgar. The Obamas appear to have taste, so I am assuming that the Inauguration will be a dignified ceremony followed by a jolly national bash, rather than a display of wealth and privilege — and that it would be tasteful even if he were coming to office in prosperous times.

Mary Wells Hopes the Angry Don't Tune In

They are corny, aren’t they? From an old world. America can’t afford a corny old-world celebration (even though Obama is an idea worth celebrating). What will the First Lady will wear? Is that exciting? Going from one celebration or star-hosted party to another to see who is there — is that a thrill? Think of all the people in the world who don’t know how they will care for their families now who will see all that boring old-fashioned nonsense on television – and will know how expensive it must be. Many are angry already. I hope they don’t watch.

To all who say “Bah Humbug” to the inaugural celebrations: I say “Sour Grapes and Horsefeathers.” It is an occasion to celebrate freedom, our democracy and our growth. I never thought I’d see the day that so many of us will be able to say to our children “You can grow up to be the President of the United States of America” and not be telling a lie.

We ARE going to work on that, aren’t we! What an astounding irony that Senator Clinton + Barack Obama had to duke it out! Either one’s candidacy and eventual victory boded change and celebration. Would I feel the same way about the inaugural celebrations for a woman’s Presidency… absolutely! As Americans, our citizenship requires hard choices everyday. We are still a young country and we are still developing one step at a time. “One small step for mankind, one gigantic (sic) step… (Yes, I am aware I am misquoting.)

I think we should be very happy about the inuaguration and the cost will not over shadow how very speical and historic this day will be, millions on the day and millions who will be watching around the world are waiting for this day to come. The fact that PE Obama is going to be our next President has thrilled millions across the globe and that is really something to be proud of.

I heard the Obama Inauguration costs $150Mil., compared to the Bush inauguration of $43 Mil. Yet the media bashed Bush and excuses Obama’s excess. The media and most dems take hypocracy to new heights. I’ve lost my respect for the media quite a while now, but now I also lost my hope of change.

Are you kidding me??? This is one of, if not THE biggest reason that over 2 million people apparently, are going to be in attendence and, some people want to change it, or reduce it, or save money, by altering the plans in some fashion.????? Look folks, this country is in such a deep hole because of the present administration and the deceit, lies, crimes, favortism, cronyism and so much more - and, some want to cut the cost of the best thing which could possibly bring this country back together in almost a decade? Stop taking stupid pills!
