Weigh in: What do you think of Oprah's brave revelation that her weight has gone up to 200 pounds?

Liz Smith's Not Surprised Oprah's Sharing Her Personal Struggle

I never cease to wonder at how Oprah uses facets of her own personal life to illuminate problems and procedures facing us all. She developed an entire successful magazine using this method and she gets results. 1) She defuses her personal wealth and specialness by appearing open and generous. 2) She illustrates problems and solutions that are common but very bothersome. 3) She instigates a sympathetic rapport with her audience by relating to them, being candid and down to earth.

P.S. She guarantees magazine interest and TV ratings over the next months as she lets her audience follow her latest weight loss. Can she do it? You bet. She is one brilliant cookie.

Jane Wagner: Oprah's 'Openness and Honesty Are Inspiring'

I always respond to these questions the way Liz does. She puts things so thoughtfully and beautifully, I really feel I should just say, "Ditto."
I loved Liz’s answer to the Oprah question. Anyway, here’s my two cents worth:

I admire Oprah and think she shows courage in sharing details about her life. She takes us with her on her journey through her troubles and triumphs to self-discovery. Her openness and honesty are inspiring and her self-revelation often leads to our own self-awareness. Oprah is a national treasure not just because she is an important communicator but because she is a powerful consciousness raiser.

I think of all that when I think of Oprah — not how thin or how fat. Even Buddha had a few extra fat cells.

Thank you, Belinda, in a forum where we have all discussed so many deep issues it’s not bad to have a little levity sometimes, we need it here and we need it in life :)

I guess one would have to care about Oprah first, right?

No, you don’t have to care about Oprah. But you do have to understand that there is nothing wrong with a conversation on issues that aren’t deep and profound 24-7. That sometimes it’s okay for us to discuss Oprah’s weight, or Palin’s make-up, or Hillary’s little known facts, without criticism from people like you as dismissing those topics as a waste of time.

Understood and I’m really not trying to be a smartass. I guess if I liked her more, I would be glad to talk about it. Some of these issues can be over talked. Oprah’s weight is always in the news somewhere and Sarah too…

Southern Girl, Oprah has been talking about her weight since way back in 1989. I am a bit tired of it to be perfectly honest with you. She has a lot of options in regards to taking care of her health. Cooks, trainers etc… I have friends with thyroid conditions and they’ve gained maybe 20 to 40 pounds and that’s it. Oprah is endangering her health which really concerns me. Bottom line is the thyroid condition does pack on pounds but not THAT much. It really comes down to Oprah and if she wants to become healthier. Maybe I am giving tough love but it is what it is.

Oprah is an inspiration whether she is 100 lbs or 200 lbs. I don’t know why it’s an issue. She is wonderful, she will never be anything less than wonderful. If I could say one thing to Oprah, it would be, “Honey, you are beautiful inside and out, and YOU need to love yourself and accept the fact that people don’t care about your weight, they care about YOU”…

It’s nice to know that others go through life losing and gaining the same pounds over and over again. And if Oprah does it when she’s able to pay someone to cook for her, I feel a little better.

We all identify with the pain of gaining weight, but we’ve been down this road with Oprah before. Boring! I applaud her for getting healthy, but I say do it in private this time. For more on this issue, visit my blog: www.fortyfabulous.blogspot.com

Oprah and her weight is one of those things that has always made me think “see… everyone has their shit”. No one gets to walk the universe without their own struggles and their own flaws. I’ve always found it fascinating that will all her money and resources this is so incredibly difficult for her. You hear people all the time say (about beautiful rich women ) “if i had her money id look like that” “if i could hire a chef and a trainer i’d look like that to”. Oprah in my mind… has always highlighted the fact that weight is so much more than that.

The ups and downs of weight can take a real tole on a persons image of self. I’m finally able to look myself in the mirror and love what I see. But it’s taken me up to now that I’ll be 63 on Christmas Eve to feel this way. When you get there, oh what a feeling!

Oprah looks so gorgeous in any form. If she wants to eat a dozen chocolate truffles … she gives so much to us. Life teaches us that we are ever changing.

It’s about the only thing she has in common with us “regular” women in America. I hopped off the Oprah bandwagon when, about 2 years ago, she did her drive across America with Gayle, and showed how out of touch with America she is, when she didn’t know how to pump gas, and expected someone to pick up her bags for her at the Holiday Inn.

… and the thing with her dogs. I find her relationship with her dogs excessive and annoying. But it’s not hurting me, so whatever …
