Weigh in: What do you think of Oprah's brave revelation that her weight has gone up to 200 pounds?

Liz Smith's Not Surprised Oprah's Sharing Her Personal Struggle

I never cease to wonder at how Oprah uses facets of her own personal life to illuminate problems and procedures facing us all. She developed an entire successful magazine using this method and she gets results. 1) She defuses her personal wealth and specialness by appearing open and generous. 2) She illustrates problems and solutions that are common but very bothersome. 3) She instigates a sympathetic rapport with her audience by relating to them, being candid and down to earth.

P.S. She guarantees magazine interest and TV ratings over the next months as she lets her audience follow her latest weight loss. Can she do it? You bet. She is one brilliant cookie.

Jane Wagner: Oprah's 'Openness and Honesty Are Inspiring'

I always respond to these questions the way Liz does. She puts things so thoughtfully and beautifully, I really feel I should just say, "Ditto."
I loved Liz’s answer to the Oprah question. Anyway, here’s my two cents worth:

I admire Oprah and think she shows courage in sharing details about her life. She takes us with her on her journey through her troubles and triumphs to self-discovery. Her openness and honesty are inspiring and her self-revelation often leads to our own self-awareness. Oprah is a national treasure not just because she is an important communicator but because she is a powerful consciousness raiser.

I think of all that when I think of Oprah — not how thin or how fat. Even Buddha had a few extra fat cells.

Oprah is one of the few self-made female billionaires so I guess she has to give in to the culture and let them see her as weak on something. So she gains some weight? But woof - she’s a winner. I don’t watch her show but anyone who gets Americans reading is aces in my book.

A friend of mine said yesterday, “Why is Oprah embarrassed? We like Oprah fat. In fact, we like fat Oprah better than we like skinny Oprah.” This gave me pause, and suddenly, I realized, yeah, she’s right.

I get it we all seem to line up by political persuasion over Oprah’s weight gain. Why are we discussing Oprah’s weight? Why do we discuss Paris Hilton, Brittney Spears or any other celebrity. Back in the day mothers used to say eat everything on your plate because people in China are starving. We need a little levity and break from worldly woes but alas no matter what the subject enter politics. “oh I am not bashing Oprah” Oh really.?

I honor her honesty about this. Frankly it reminds all of us that she is human like the rest of us. She is a beautiful soul who has done her best to use her own life experience to teach the rest of us what she has learned the hard way. Bravo Oprah keep on being the very best you you can be. As long as you can keep yourself working out, the number REALLY doesn’t matter.

Oprah is probably going to launch some big “Lose weight with Me” thing on Jan 1st & this is the first “promo”.

Well, Eckhart Tolle might suggest that when you “take on the weight of the world” it’s bound to show up on on your hips. I’m just glad she threw her weight behind Obama. I’ve stopped watching Oprah, and I used to be a fan. She just got too big for her britches somewhere along the line. If she spent a little less time “sharing” all her second-hand wisdom with the world, she might be able to lighten up a little. I’d like to see her really shift her focus, keep her private life private, stop taking herself so seriously (and maybe re-think her production staff). At that point she might actually have something uplifting to offer again. Until then, I just think, “Stop telling me. Show me.”

I got to say, I’m disheartened by how posts evolve—or dissolve may be a better word—here any more. It isn’t just this post, but here we are… I mean the topic is Oprah and her reaction to her weight. Why is that not okay to discuss? Yes, there is a lot going on right now, and obviously some posters just don’t like the woman. But, you know, there is always something going on in the world, and there always will be. How does that make one person’s life less important? And why comment just to say we don’t like someone? There are things Oprah does that make me cringe sometimes, and I pick and choose the shows she airs depending on my interest, but I don’t base my overall perspective of her because of a few things. In as much as I don’t know the woman, I respect Oprah and I admire her. I don’t understand how anyone sees her approach to life or her talk show in nefarious terms; the woman is beautiful and accomplished as well as bright, generous, genuinely interested in others, as well as being honest even about things that are hurting her. I’ve never seen a guest tied to a chair or Oprah twisting an arm. She does have cooks and trainers I guess, but that is only part of controlling weight. I sure know I’d be looking (and feeling) like a million dollars if I did all the healthy, right things I know I should do. Appearance directly affects our self-esteem and that is part of our holistic approach to healthy living. When I think of where Oprah came from and how much she has accomplished in her life, that is an inspiration, and perhaps it’s why she is so important to a lot of people. Her show is the highest-rated talk show in the history of TV and it’s syndicated internationally. She is also known for her persistent role as a philanthropist, which I see reflected on her show. All of this from one powerful spirit of a woman. That is why I thought this site was created, to celebrate women. There are so many places that allow for every kind of derogatory and negative perspective of women. I hoped this is a site that is supportive of women.

Oprah seems to be dealing with an addiction to food. If that’s true, it’s a whole other ball of wax then proper diet, exercise and positive thinking. Whatever it is, I’d love to see her at peace with herself in this area. I love this woman, she’s done a lot for the big world.

It’s 10:47 a.m. in Dublin , Ireland. I think Oprah is a wondeful person regardless of her size. My own Mother is “healthy looking” as i like to say but I do worry about her health because I’d like her to be around for a long time especially now that my Dad’s just retired! He’s helping her by encouraging her to go on long walks and eat well. I think my mother’s weight issue is very emotionally based.

I’ll not “weigh in” with an opinion, my dears, but I certainly have an observation about the question. If the question assumes that her admission was “brave,” it certainly has an expectation of what the answer will be, does it not, my dears?

I, for one, could care less about Oprah’s weight. What I do love is that she throws it around for good causes.

i appreciate her honesty and openness. i also appreciate the need to observe and act upon current events. however, let us all take a moment to focus on what we are creating by focusing on the negatives around us. create in love, and reap the positive harvest.
