Candice Bergen: My Gastronomical Epiphany

I haven’t eaten red meat for 40 years. I wish I could give up chicken (except free-range) but then I’m down to fish which seem a) tainted, and b) endangered. By the way, I don’t not eat meat mainly for health reasons but also because I had an epiphany walking through Les Halles at the age of 23 that eating meat is disgusting, arrogant, oblivious and unconscionably cruel. Moving on … I try increasingly to eat only organic veggies and fruit. Of course, I don’t, but the thought (and the anxiety) is always lurking. I am not afraid to eat great whole-grain bread. But I also eat the white kind. I wonder about the perils of cloning food but think it may come to billions eating cloned food or no food. I was just in Paris and am now in Berlin and, I have to tell you, I have not stopped eating. It was all delicious, and I never had the slightest frisson of fear. Moving on.

Mary Wells: There Are So Many Reasons Not to Eat

I am having a hard time as I eat out a lot and don’t trust anybody’s hands. Immigration and travel have introduced new bacteria and viruses everywhere. Now I can’t eat tomatoes and my friends in Europe won’t eat buffalo mozzarella so there goes Caprese salad. I eat little meat but now salmon is disappearing and you get signs in restaurants all over saying that it is and don’t eat it yet you see it on the menu. Anyway, mercury has invaded fish so I eat it a little less frequently. I may go back to Bill Blass’s heavenly meatloaf. I was never sure what was in that. I avoid lettuce except at home and we are into rewashing blueberries and soaking them in lemon juice so we aren’t surprised by spiders. It is a bummer. The worst of it is that I am not losing weight.

I do my treadmill on the boat and walk around every port and the only dessert I eat is a tiny — very tiny — scoop of chocolate chip mint that we make. But I am the same weight. Now even rice feels like I am taking food out of poor children’s mouths. And it seems a lot of things could be used for fuel to lower prices. There are so many reasons not to eat.

Joan Ganz Cooney: Is Healthy Eating Leading to Cancer?

No. I try to eat healthy but I don’t pay much attention to where the food comes from so my "healthy" eating is probably leading to cancer. But then, so is everything else.

Liz Smith: Organic Is for the Rich!

Are you kidding? No more than I ever did; I always only ate strawberries, corn, watermelon in season. These days organic is for rich people. I am not dedicated to food.

Yes. Once you’ve had cancer, that kind of straightens your head out about organic. (I also no longer have my feet x-rayed when I buy shoes.)

Mugsy, Mentioning the big foot xray brought back many memories from my childhood. I remember when we would be in the shoe department and I would play with the shoe xray machine; I loved it! Gosh, when did they outlaw the darned things? The younger readers here will not even know what we are talking about. My older sister and I have wondered over the years if that is one of many reasons cancer went on such an increase years ago. But, I sure did love it when it was new shoe day.

I distinctly remember those things—makes me wonder how we all ever survived.

Diana T, I worked with a man on a book and when he had a general store in the south he used one of those. They got them from the shoe companies. Either Florsheim or Buster Brown, if I remember correctly. He always worried about that.

I buy nearly all organic, vegetarian, non-GMO soy products, and organic cotton to use capital to help bend culture to sustainable practices. I like the “Gorgeously Green” author’s short vid tips to save money on organics: http://www.gorgeouslygreen.com/ I’ve cut way back on restaurants. My occasional ‘bad’ is a French boulangerie better than most in Paris…smells incredible. http://www.baybread.com/book.php This is terrific. Four very cool NYC foodies having lunch at the French Laundry in Napa. It’s the best restaurant in California, some say the US, and one of the best in the world. If ever come to Napa it’s the place to try. And if not, even the vid is fun. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-5Sol8K-3o

To the beach……….Oh my god. I just watched youtube.com The French Laundry…….I don’t eat meat but all the other food was magnificent. I’ll have to save my money and go up there. Maybe for 77th birthday next year. Thanks for sharing

Dona, The wine country’s especially beautiful in autumn just before harvest. Francis Ford Coppola’s is the most visited and he’s a regular at The French Laundry. Here’s a winery directory link: http://www.atlasofwineries.com/ The other place that’s really neat is Copia. The American Center for Wine, Food and Arts started by Robert Mondavi http://www.copia.org The Napa Valley wineries are the #2 California tourist destination after Disneyland.

Dona - We celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary @ the French Laundry and it was magical. We had the “tasting menu”, and they just brought one delicious plate after another. Everything so fresh and flavorful and Oh!, it was a night I’ll always remember. The building itself really IS an old laundry building (didn’t have time to watch the video, I am at work, so I hope I am not repeating here. Forgive). At the table, your napkin is folded with the old fashioned type clothes pin, and you get to keep that as a souvenir. I still have mine with other mementos. It truly was the best meal I have ever had. And Yountville is a very pretty town. My daughter moved to Napa 2 years ago and now I get to visit often. I hope you get to go, Dona!!

suzanne, the good news about corn is that its biggest use is probably high fructose syrup. it would be hard to withstand a corn shortage, but the use made of most corn is not very healthy, anyway. wheat is a bigger problem.

Yes, I think so……..when buying some produce if I have a choice I choose the Organic. I haven’t become a fanatic about it yet……..who knows. I really don’t notice any difference in taste. I guess it’s just safer. You have to trust the signs……..sometimes I wonder if it’s true.

We eat as much organic food as we can and now that the growing season is finally upon us here in Maine, we love the local organic farms and try to support them. AND the food tastes so much better.

I love organic food - I shop at an organic shop each week and if I can’t get there, I go to a farmer’s market. We have cut down the amount of meat that we eat. It is a much better lifestyle. I love food and slow food at that. Keeping the integrity in food is important. No fast food in our house ever.
