Marlo Thomas's 'Limp, Flat' Hair

My hair. It’s limp, flat and needs an enormous amount of volumizer and coaxing. (It also requires a lot of talking to, but I’d rather not get into that right now.) I look forward to the day when I don’t give a damn. Telly Savalas must have died a very happy man.

My legs. I’ve been blessed with shapely legs but a few times a month my ankles look as if I am trying to smuggle two hot water bottles! Ugh! Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday - sexy beyond belief. Thursday I eat a cracker and you would think I just inflated a dingy because my ankles bloat and swell ten times their normal size. What is that? I mean beyond the fact that it is proof the Lord is a man, because a woman would be so diabolical! It’s just odd…I welcome menopause….I’d take night sweat over my legs looking like the Michelin Man any day! :-)

Belinda have you ever talked to a doc about that? I had a friend whose ankles were swelling and it turns out there can be all kinds of physical problems that cause it. some of them fairly serious.

I know Chrome, I was kidding around about it, but I really do recognize it could be serious. One of the MANY illnesses I was diagnosed with that I had to overcome a couple of months ago, was a blood clot that traveled from my leg to my lung. Talk about scary! My hunch is it is tied to a circulation problem of some sort. I have a doctor’s appointment to discuss it. We’ll see. I just hope it isn’t serious. Given that I was also diagnosed at that time with diabetes, I have concerns about losing my limbs.

i hope hope hope you are exercising woman! it is the miracle drug for both diabetes and any kind of circulation problem. my friend who got diagnosed with cancer had the swelling problem. it was from all the trauma from her surgeries. they affected her lymph nodes possibly forever. the lymph system is a circulatory system. so she gets terrible swelling. the only thing that helps it consistently is exercise.

Yep. I’ve always believed in exercise, but after my recent diagnosis I’ve kicked it up a notch. I was also diagnosed with hypothyroidism, so I’m on a synthetic thyroid medication. It helps a lot in terms of regulating my metabolism. So between the medications and the exercise, I really do believe by June at the latest I should be stable medically. You know what Chrome, I’ve been pussy-footing around this subject (my health scare) for awhile on this site. I’ve told you more than I have anyone else. Let me just put it all out there. On Nov. 3rd of last year I was rushed to the emergency room and then admitted into ICU. I have never been in a hospital before and up until that moment really thought I was healthy. But I had breathing troubles that I thought was just a result of a cold I had been battling. After a slew of tests I was diagnosed with High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, Hypothyroidism, a blood clot in my left lung, Pneumonia in Both lungs, Heart Disease, Sarcoidosis in both lungs and a lung capacity of less than 10%. It was really, really bad. So now I am on a million different medications including insulin daily. I have to exercise, eat foods I’m not used to eating and cut out many I shouldn’t have been eating anyway. Control my stress level and avoid any circumstances with elevated smoke or pollution. Now keep in mind if you and I were friends in person Chrome, you never in a millions years would have suspected I had so much going on. You would have thought of me as a typical, attractive, healthy woman in her 40’s. It really is amazing how the outside can fool you in terms of what is going on inside.

oh yes the outside can fool you. have you seen the ads and commercials for women and heart disease? I’ve read a ton of stories about women our age who look healthy, exercise regularly and turn around one day on a gurnie with a heart attack! Our bodies are a gift that we get to live in and should do our very best to care for… but ultimately we are not in control. My best friend found that out this year as well. she was 55 years old… never smoked… drinks very moderately… eats very well and exercises regularly. she went in for what she thought were vague stomach flu type symptoms and discovered a tumor on her pancreas. That was almost a year ago now. one day she’s a healthy active woman and the next she’s basically an invalid. although she’s past the invalid point at this part. she is working out with a personal trainer and doing a great job of taking care of her body to the best of her ability. but boy oh boy it’s the truth that we don’t know what’s around teh corner isn’t it?

Belinda, A friend of mine [Harvard lawyer very successful/fit etc] came down with one of the worst kinds of cancers. Among all the other treatments she drank 2-4 oz of fresh wheat grass everyday from Jamba Juice, Whole Foods or someplace like that. She’d always been very attractive and vibant looking, huge white smile, bright eyes, fit etc, during the chemo etc she looked like a Holocaust survior, really scary. Six months later she looked 15 years younger and at a party of 100 people was the singularly best looking person in the place. Swears it was the wheat grass. I did it for 6 months faithfully [do not like the taste] the fresh out performs anything elese have ever tried…hair, skin, energy everything gets tremendous boost…was also doing lots of workouts [as gave me so much energy a constant mutually reinforcing cycle] that people literally would stop me in stores, on the street and ask if I was a dancer, taught pilates or yoga…”what do you do?” It was the fresh wheat grass…the packaged stuff does not have the same effect. You would have to eat an entire table top loaded with greens to get the benefit of what’s in 2-4 oz. I would never have believed it if hadn’t seen what it did for my friend and me. I need to start back on it just do not like the taste…kind of gags me. But re your situation that has happened to two friends like about…looked fine and all the sudden life totally derailed and both wound up in very critical condition,,,both recovered. Am sure you’ll do well too even though have obviously have gone through a great deal and will take a while to get it all balanced and straightened out…..am sure you’ll do it. Glad you’re still here! Oh, and for a laugh….my Dad sent me this today. Really funny and clever….esp like the Obama part [lol]: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWiXy55OHyY

Dear God Belinda- what a nightmare! The good news is that all of those can be taken care of with your determination except the sarcoidosis. That’s the tricky one. You will not even need drugs for any of those once you get them in control. My sister was taking 30 - 40 pills a day for all those same ailments except the sarcoidosis. The pills were basically keeping her alive. But she also had some heart problems with everything else. I think she’s down to a few pills a day now after losing 80 pounds with Dr. B. Many of her issues were weight related. She still has 50 to go. But she is in great spirits. I agree with Carmel that fresh is the way to go. Stay away from anything in cans or any manufactured foods at all. Anything that comes already “assembled” is not FOOD. A piece of fish, a steak, a bunch of vegetables, etc. are actual food. You can actually buy a long window box shaped container full of wheat grass that you cut and process at home. Or make a daily trek to a juice shop as a daily ritual. It does taste horrible but you can mix it with a green apple and a carrot/celery or a beet or a hunk of ginger to tone it down. I had allergy tests and discovered I was allergic to almost everything I ate and everything in my environment. Every grass, every tree, every grain, every flower, etc. The big one was mold. That meant first of all - moving far far away from Saskatchewan, keeping a clean but chem free house, — and then cutting out almost every packaged / in a jar / in a can / frozen food on the planet. Not even ketchup. No yogurt/wine/cheese/beer/booze/tea/coffee! NOTHING. I decided to only eat fresh food and after two years I had only cats and a slight milk allergy left on the allergy list. I was light / strong / clear eyed / and a force to be reckoned with!

Thanks for this terrific info AP…as soon as get really settled with do the grow your own wheat grass and the addition of an apple is terrific idea….or any of the things you mention. Great info for Belinda since you’ve had all of these experiences. You amaze me, always a font of terrific information.
Belinda Joy
Ugh Amelie! You had to cut out everything! That is exactly what I have had to do. You and Carmel are dead on in terms of going natural. I’ve been doing it. The irony is, it’s not as if I was a pig. It wasn’t the amount of food I ate, it was the type of foods. I usually only ate one meal a day, never breakfast and dinner only when I ate out with friends. But when I ate, the foods were always what we would describe as fatty. Steak with baked potato, Shrimp and Alfredo sauce over pasta, etc. etc. It’s like we hear all the time, even a thin person can develop plaque in their heart. Now it’s all lean meats, fruits and veggies. You and Carmel made a great suggestion about the juices….I’m open to anything that will speed my recovery. And what you said about your sister is so important for anyone on this site going through what I am. Everything with the exception of my sarcoid is reversible. The sarcoidosis is for life (it’s hereditary in my family unfortunately) but everything else can be resolved. Like your sister, all these medications are keeping me alive. I can’t wait until I no longer have to take them. I feel so bad for what your sister went through, but I have to admit Amelie, it gives me comfort to hear I’m not alone in terms of being side-swiped with a laundry list of serious ailments. Thanks for all the great advice and your kind words. Let’s hope by early Summer I’ll be able to report I am back to my old self only better! :-)

Yikes Belinda, you have a full plate. What a blessing that you still have good legs (most days) and that you look healthy from the outside. Imagine how much more discouraging this would be if every time you glanced in the mirror a sick person was looking back at you! I wish you the best managing all these new concerns.

Thanks Lee. You’d be proud of the changes I am adjusting to. My friends tease me that I am being overly optimistic about being 100% by June of this year, but I really do think if I do all that my physicians tell me to, change my lifestyle, I will be fine.

Belinda, You’re just too funny! I loved the description you wrote about your ankles. I wish for you no night sweats when you reach the age of menopause. Believe me, you DON’T want ‘em. Thanks, however, for making me laugh today. Maggie
