tony perkins in GREENWILLOW—wherever did that show go? just discovered that tony presented a collection of short stories to possibly hal prince once upon a time who then gave them to stephen sondheim who proceeded to create COMPANY, which my son will be starring in at the end of the month—lead role—you know, BEINGALIVE? hoo-ray! do check out SWEENEYTODD dvd and the concept concert starring patti lupone also on dvd…lansbury suffers by comparison to patti…the movie is an improvement upon all treatments…gotta go re-watch THEREWILLBEBLOOD, which by the way SHOULD be musicalized, believe it or not—-the above presentation has been brought to you by SIXDEGREESOFSEPARATION! started out with tony perkins singing his heart out (and apparently stretched his two hands far apart as he sang “NARROWMYBED” and clasped them together for the lyric “wide my world”—interesting guy!) (really great to preview what is written in this midget square to avoid mis-typings—keep this in! “fumble-fingers” approves!) tony was slated to star in COMPANY, but dean jones did, had a break-down and so larry kert (my favorite) stepped in….wish i owned that cd.
My mother began taking me to B’way shows when I was about 6 or 7 years old, and so I grew up listening to the music and singing all the songs. The song from South Pacific, “You’ve got to be taught to be afraid of people whose eyes are diff’rently made…” was one of the songs that taught me about racial prejudices and social classes. The show was not just about love stories in exotic locales, or American service men singing about their sexual frustrations. Other B’way shows I particularly love are Pipe Dream, based on Salinger’s Cannery Row novels; Gypsy, because I saw my mother in Ethel Merman’s Mama Rose; and Camelot, when I sat so close to the stage that Julie Andrews could hear my childish soprano as I sang along with her!
these blurbs are exceptionally fun to read! didn’t john steinbeck write the “cannery row” beauty? salinger wrote CATCHERINTHERYE and then stayed home the rest of his life! not so goofy when one really stops to think about it! check out SWEENEYTODD, the film—such a sondheim endorsed improvement over the broadway version…rickman sensational…depp and bonham carter cute…but that’s okay…lightens the story up a tad…music absolutely infectious!
Camelot, Man of laMancha, Paint Your Wagon are my favorites. But, I’ll sit and watch any musical or play. The music from those I mentioned is the music that resonates in me.
