If my daughter’s sick or in distress. Most 4:00 a.m.’s for months — before she was leaving for college…then, I was in distress. If I have a lot of lines to learn for the next day. But, after years of insomnia, I’m thrilled to simply awake from sleep.

I wake up about 3-4 times a night. Usually it is my own dreams ending. Sometimes it is my 8 year old daughter who has a nightmare. The better question is what do you do if you can’t fall back to sleep. I have a small radio with an ear plug and listen to talk show radio. It is amazing what you can learn in the middle of the night. I’ve learned about: the end of the world in 2012, that their are aliens that take people away and return them to earth, what new entertainers are appearing in town, that truck drivers are very interesting, I listen to old radio programs from Canada and men talking about sports. I find that many more men ae up at night than women or at least on the radio. It is really a fascinating time of the day and I feel bad for people who sleep through the night.

It’s the only time I can write uninterrupted! My writing coach says I channel… I don’t know about that, but I have an extremely busy family… So I love waking up alone and excited in the black quiet. I trust spirit to move me in the right direction… And the tiny night lights I have all over the house so I don’t trip over animals or toys or lunchbboxes. I hate bright lights in my dark journeys. I don’t want to wake up that much!

I’ll wake up if I think I hear one of my boys stirring (or just breathing a bit louder than usual), if I think I hear a sound in the house (too many Sunday Spookers with Mom as a kid), snoring, or sometimes it can be nothing at all that wakes me. I tend to have an over-active mind at bedtime and when I wake up in the middle of the night. Sometimes, I funover my lists for the next day, check to make sure I set my alarm, try to rememer if I have my uniform ready for work or the kids clothes out for daycare. I try to rationalize that I’m saving time in the morning by doing this at night but I end up spending those extra minutes trying to wake up from an unrestful sleep.

My bladder or my dog. But I dream to much at night, so I never feel like I am getting a good nights sleep. But its rarely stress. I mean thank GOD for prozac!!! ‘nough said. :)

With a snorer, a sleepwalker, and a head banger in my household, I wake up 2-3 times at night. I go right back to sleep. Ironically, I wake up not from the noise they make, but when they are silent!

My cat…because if she’s up, why aren’t you? I’d like to know where Jane got her pillow speakers. What an awesome - and totally ear friendly - idea.

On the top 10 list of dreads for an entrepreneur, death is NOT on the list….making payroll is! That’s what gets me up at 4 in the morning.

Bathroom duties call and that is usually about 3 AM. From that point I am awake but of course the sleepness hits me at about 5 AM when I am supposed to get dressed for work. Having had a job in corporate America for more than 40 years, getting up early (6AM) daily for that long is automatic so getting up at 4 AM is nothing. My major problem is not being able to stay awake beyond 10 PM when I am home in the evenings which usually interfers with my reading times.

Hot flashes. The dog trying to wedge in next to me. My husband—who works till very late—trying to wedge in next to me and the dog. Morbid, unshakable thoughts. Less morbid, no less unshakable fretting.

I wake up by an internal clock. When my kids were little I got up at 4 am just to have some of my own quiet time to read, pray have a cup of coffee in bed. Now it is a habit. I will wake up at other times during the night by an actual physical anxious/foreboding feeling that something is going on somewhere.

Raising four kids, that was the only quiet time in my house and life - if I sleep later than 4 a.m. to this day (all kids grown and gone) I still feel like I’m missing the best part of my day.
