What is the most memorable evening you've had this summer? Will you recall it often?

How Whoopi Made Liz Smith's Summer

I went to Greece early in the summer, I went to the Hamptons, I went to Vancouver so I had enough flying and traveling for all time. It was all great fun. But I think the best was going with some of the wOws to see our pal Whoopi Goldberg onstage in the campy musical "Xanadu." This kind of poor man’s version of the gods come down to mix with mortals has reverential touches reminiscent of Cole Porter’s classic "Out of This World." On its own level, it is simply genuine outrageous fun. And if Whoopi can play a Roman man as she did onstage in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," then you know she can play a witty wicked Greek goddess in this one. She does! She can do anything.

Joan Ganz Cooney Names One of Her Favorite Children

The most memorable evening of the summer is yet to be when my friends Liz Smith and Cynthia McFadden come out to visit with Cynthia’s ten-year-old son who is among my favorite children on earth.

wanted to say that there is just the most interesting and diverse folks on this board. I love how eveyrone’s idea of perfection is so diverse. Frannie - I to have a son deployed. your post brought tears to my eyes. Dona - sorry your summer sucked like that. I thank the powers that be for my health every single day and no - getting old is not for sissies Winery - no fair teasing about the “number of fortuitous events” with no details! lol KB - an aha moment. good for you Lorraine - I don’t know if there’s ways to discuss private on this board but I spent most of my adult life working with the various mental health systems while doing probation/parole and child protective services work. I’d be happy to brainstorm ideas.

Kelly How long has your son been deployed? Is your son in the army, if so, have you signed up with the Army FRG (Family Resources Group)? If you haven’t, google the fort he was deployed from. Hunt around for the FRG, you have to join it, they email you when you have gone through. Then you can look up his company and unit and get info about what is going on with them. They send pics home to the site so you can see them. If it is Marines, Navy or Air Force, I believe they have something comparable, but I am not sure how to access. When my son was in the 82nd Airborne, the FRG wasn’t that great, but that has changed. God Bless your son and please thank him for his service and tell him that I support him.

Frannie - right now he’s deployed on a navy carrier. he’s been out since May. Not in the line of fire at this point.. so to speak. Although they did have one incident where they ended up at battle stations. However… he’s a cocky young man and he loves the military. He’s working towards going out in the field iwth the marines as their corpman. Amazing to me that he’s working towards something i wish he’d run like hell from. Kids…

Kelly - mine started out on a carrier, and what comfort I took in the safety of that LGB (large gray boat) hah! Then, he set about pursuing his dream and accomplished it. I am beyond proud of the work he does and the bravery he and his team put forth on each deployment…but yes, this Mother wishes sometimes (okay…all the darn time…) that he was back on that carrier. Blessings to you, your family and your son. He is in the prayers of this Sailor’s Mom.

Kelly I am glad he is not in the line of fire. It is also amazing to me that my son has done what he has done. You can’t imagine how hard we tried to talk him out of it. Wow, so your son is a Marine. Semper Fi. I have two nephews that were marines years ago. They are both very successful businessmen, and really well respected in their communities. They told me how tough the Marine training is. I have nothing but respect for your son. But gosh, Kids…… you said it. I read yesterday that Sec State Rice and Iraq have been firming up a deal to have combat troops removed from the cities by June of ‘09, and then all combat troops, removed by 2011. We shall see. Keep us informed about his progress. Let me know if there is anyone on the ship that I can send anything to. If your son knows of someone that doesn’t get packages from home, please let me know. Every time Eric was deployed there was always someone that had no one. So if you hear of anyone like that, pass it on. Peace and Grace, or peas and gravy whichever feels good.

4th of July night with lots of family, on Indian Rocks beach in Florida, watching the many fireworks displays put on by surrounding people up and down the shoreline. Warm, humid, beautiful sunset, with ocean waves providing the soundtrack in between firework bursts! A great night.

Saturday’s baloon show was a blast here in Littleton, Colorado. I especially loved being able to sketch a balloon that I will later turn into a water color painting. While I was sketching, people who were curious would watch as my pencil worked meticulously on the paper. The only down side was trying to get up from where I was sitting, because my feet had fallen asleep!! It was fun explaining how to do calligraphy to would-be artists. I think I’ll get a diary and jot this down.

Sitting on our patio the night of August 1rst; reflecting on how that evening’s sky was so much like the evening’s sky five years ago when my husband and I reunited three years after our divorce.

Sitting with my husband and daughter on a yacht in Prince William Sound in Alaska enjoying dinner while anchored in front of a beautiful iceburg. Utter quiet except for the seals, the sounds of the iceburg calving, and the waves. Clear skies, clear water. The most beautiful and relaxing place to be.

Well, I’m in Grand Rapids, Fran, on the other side of the state from Flint, about 2 hours. This (west) side is much, much nicer, believe me. We’re not far from Lake Michigan, and G.R. is a nice city. Flint, like Detroit, has really fallen on hard times over the decades. Not to denigrate it, but the crime rate is out of the roof in Flint. Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids are the only two relatively large cities in the state that have flourished, while most of the rest of the state has languished. Michigan has the highest unenjoyment rate in the country (8.5%), and has lost - by far - more manufacturing and automotive jobs during the 2000’s than any other. This state is surrounded by the freshwater Great Lakes, and has more water surrounding it than any other, including Florida. And it has the second-most inland lakes, behind Minnesota. So, if we could get the auto industry rolling again, that would be wonderful. I think manufacturing’s a lost cause: too much has been outsourced.

James, My birth mother came to California over 60 years ago, but she had moved to New York for awhile before that. Her father was born in Flint at the beginning of the 20th century. He left too. I don’t know much about it, but always wondered. I knew it had fallen on hard times being near Detroit.
