What is the most memorable evening you've had this summer? Will you recall it often?

How Whoopi Made Liz Smith's Summer

I went to Greece early in the summer, I went to the Hamptons, I went to Vancouver so I had enough flying and traveling for all time. It was all great fun. But I think the best was going with some of the wOws to see our pal Whoopi Goldberg onstage in the campy musical "Xanadu." This kind of poor man’s version of the gods come down to mix with mortals has reverential touches reminiscent of Cole Porter’s classic "Out of This World." On its own level, it is simply genuine outrageous fun. And if Whoopi can play a Roman man as she did onstage in "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," then you know she can play a witty wicked Greek goddess in this one. She does! She can do anything.

The most memorable evening of the summer is yet to be when my friends Liz Smith and Cynthia McFadden come out to visit with Cynthia’s ten-year-old son who is among my favorite children on earth.

So wonderful about the wedding, Dona! I hope you find some relief from your health issues.

A perfect summer evening in the north central mountains of Pennsylvania. We rode bikes over 30 miles that afternoon and were simply relaxing by the campfire. We made fresh-from-the field sweet corn and beef tenderloin wrapped in bacon grilled in pie irons over the fire, we had millions of stars, and cold beverages and I even managed to roast a few marshmallows to golden brown toasty sweet perfection. I recognized the moment as perfect and said that I hope that all the women I know, especially my daughter, has an opportunity to experience perfection at some moment in her life and is aware enough to recognize the moment. It would be disappointing to look back on it in a few years and say, “that was a perfect moment… I wish I had enjoyed it more.” My boyfriend and I seem to have a natural rhythm that creates these moments of serenity, peace and perfection. More than once we have both said, “this is as good as it gets.”

I take it this is not the same time when you were naked in the moonlight? Pennsylvania has such beauty and bounty––”the hills are alive with the sound of music”–––many people are not aware of the magnificence of this state. Lucky you.

WG…love those Good as it Gets moments and always try to imprint them too. Sounds wonderful. Have only been too Penn once. We flew to NYC and stayed for a while at St. Regis…saw friends had a blast. Then went to Ithaca for a graduation had dinner on the river. To Conn and then Willmington to see friends, all through Penn, Maryland (soft shell crab season, thank God) and WDC. Lots of friends, dinner, sites, great summer trip. Had kind of forgotten it till reminded by your post…

A summer evening on the beach with a bonfire and talking with family and friends until the sun rises. Then we jump into the sea. What a night!

Can’t believe the summer is almost over with. Not the best summer but we are recuperating from losses. Family is getting over their problems and we may get rain today and tomorrow while we have very restricted water use and my garden looks like a dried up jungle. So soon we will be bathing in our fall colors. Life is OK and Ok is good.

JMK, what state do you live in? It’s sunny and really comfortable in Michigan today. I can really tell at night now that it’s getting close to autumn. Have had to close the bedroom window at night this week for the first time in a couple months. Just as well: the pollen count soars at night, and I don’t like waking up with a stuffy nose.

James I am in the mountains of W N C. Today we have rain and some expected tomorrow. I was so excited and went and danced in the rain. The “water police” fines us $500 if we use water outdoors. I have a small water feature and had to turn off the pump. Hope my fish and frogs are ok. What water we have today is left over from the storm in Florida. You stay well in Michigan!

James My birth mother was born in Flint Michigan. My birth father in Iowa, but his family had come down from Minnesota. My husbands parents were from Chicago. Must be a great place to grow up.

Online, talking the day and evening away with a very close, loved and treasured friend—talking of all things under the sun, that lovely dance of getting to know another even more, a “twin” in temperament and feeling and then a walk alone to reflect in the gloaming of the beauty of the day and the evanescence of all things.

…then a walk home alone to reflect in the gloaming of the beauty of the day and the evanescence of all things.” Your words capture those feelings perfectly. Reminds me of the line in “Four Quartets”: …music heard so deeply that it is not heard at all, yet you are the music While the music lasts.

Frank, the day has gone, the evening come, and only now have I begun to read words beautiful, words of those suffering that bring the emotions so close, but what a special day you seem to have had . . . a time of inner highs and soaring of the mind and of the heart.
