When I watch TV now, I lament loss of some of the great old shows and I find so many of today’s shows irritating and not worth watching. Of course, I still watch them; however, these days, I’m a bit more of a grouch potato. I miss “West Wing,” “Murphy Brown” (miss seeing Candice as Murphy but now get to see her as Shirley Schmidt on “Boston Legal”), "That Girl," “Northern Exposure,” “Quantum Leap,” “Twilight Zone,” “thirtysomething” with Melanie Mayron, “Bosom Buddies” with Tom Hanks and Holland Taylor, “Outer Limits,” I could go on and on – “Designing Women.”

“The Sopranos” and “Designing Women.” And so many many more. I get hooked on things and they disappear. I am waiting now for the return of the more recent “Mad Men,” “The Riches” and “Big Love.”

Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman”. I don’t understand why this is such a completely forgotten show, and why the cable networks have refused to broadcast the reruns (other than the first few dozen episodes) in the last two decades. Granted, it is “bizarre”, and a bit dated to the 70s, but explain to me how this could be so ignored, and yet “The Golden Girls” is constantly rerun.

There are so many shows that were my favorites:”I Remember Mama”, “The Twilight Zone”. “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”,”The Jackie Gleason Show” just to name a few. It’s a shame that our children did not have these shows to enjoy. I’m sure if they saw them today they would not be able to appreciate how great they were. Of course, TVLand airs some of the great shows but I doubt that the young people find the shows as appealing as we did. My daughter, who is 40 has been hooked on “The Golden Girls”…I also watch it occasionally and find that it was ahead of its time and extremely entertaining.

Soap” for its weirdo, wacko, wonderful cast and story lines “The West Wing” for it’s intelligence, wit, and for showing us that a POTUS can have integrity “The Carol Burnett Show” for its pure genius and hysterically funny ad libs “Murphy Brown” for giving us a female lead with brains, a great sense of humor, and real humanity (thank you Candice!). “Northern Exposure” for wonderful characters…especially “Marilyn”

ah, yes. northern exposure! and my first response was that was the week that was, from the 1960’s. murphy brown was great. actually, there have been a lot of great television shows compared to now. do i want to tune in and see who is being fired or voted off the island? no! i get enough of that in real life.

The West Wing,” though I’m glad to have the complete series collection to relive. One season of “Murphy Brown” on DVD, however, is simply not enough, especially given the lack of reruns on the air. I really miss that show, along with “Judging Amy” and “The X-Files.” Yeah…my taste in TV shows is pretty, uh, eclectic. Anxiously awaiting the new X-Files movie.
