I look back and remember being a child and watching Mary Tyler Moore and That Girl and seeing myself as able to do anything when I grew up. I can’t really imagine Barbara Billingsly and Donna Reed as my role models. Murphy Brown also inspired me as I was finishing college and beginning my career. We still use the line about bringing out the ruler to settle disputes between males. I must say too, that the character Shirley in Boston Legal is a wonderful role model for older girls!

Lots of the above - yes on Mary Hartman and Soap! I also liked Laugh-in and Get Smart too - and who didn’t want to be That Girl? she was the ultimate - also: courtship of eddie’s father x-files family affair northern exposure ghost and mrs. muir mary tyler moore WKRP You were there Walter Cronkite’s News On the Road with Charles Kuralt we are pretty much a Waldorf-based household now so tv is at a minimum - I know this is hypocritical of me because i grew up on tv but today’s sitcom’s are oversexed to even the little kids on the show and reality tv is silly - so it’s the PBS shows for us and our 15 yo (though I do let her watch The Office) at night (since PBS’ children’s television has gotten pretty dumb) and after the kids go to bed I do admit I watch Desperate Housewives - no cable

I don’t think you can technically “miss” something that’s available to watch on DVD or is shown on cable TV. I think that a big demarcation of one’s age now is whether one can remember that you were essentially forced to watch something at the time of its broadcast, and if you missed seeing an episode then it was your bad luck. Whereas 20 years ago one had to wait until 3 AM to catch a rerun of “Mary Tyler Moore”, now it’s available on TV Land or Nick at Night, or at least someone somewhere has got it on VHS. While it seems like we’re awash in a flood of DVD collections of old shows, it’s unfortunate that there are some things that are so old or obscure that they will never be released, despite the fact that someone, somewhere, loves it passionately.

Did anyone mention the Dick Van Dyke Show. That’s where we got out first glimpse of Mary Tyler Moore - I liked all the writers

I miss Perry Mason. I loved Della Street. Now there was a real lady….I miss Alfred Hitchcock…Now those were thrillers…as a little girl, I would get to stay up and watch those shows to keep my mom company….and we would both try to solve the mysteries together !

m*a*s*h before it got too lessony. necessary to laugh under those circumstances and for viewers during viet nam era….though pretending korean conflict. all in the family, same. carroll o’connor was a genius to play such an ass so loveably, and of course, jean stapleton whose edith was the backbone of that family. how about barney miller w/abe vigoda as fish…. these were staples of my childhood. murphy brown was the only thing i watched on tv during those years. i literally went 8 years w/o tv, though you’d never know it now, except for my serious lack of seinfeld trivia.

Of course Murphy Brown, That Girl, Golden Girls, Three’s Company, Mary Tyler Moore,Northern Exposure,Third Rock, John Lithgow was in a show in the last two years, don’t remember the name,it was like the Odd Couple (another good one) it was something like 20 Good Years, didn’t last long, Judging Amy,MASH,Ellen. There was a show where the BJ Honeycutt character from MASH played a vet that had lost his wife and lived with his daughters. I didn’t watch much of Twilight Zone but think I would like it and Alfred Hitchcock now. Masterpiece Theater is excellent ! There are a few good shows on now but not enough !

The best TV was years ago: American Playhouse, Meeting of the Minds, Studio 60. More music is needed of a classical mode.
