My favorite possession? My immediate reaction didn’t distinguish between favorite and necessary. My computer is my connection with my world. What I’m enjoying most is my new rainbow quilt.
My books, my journals, memories from going to see Oprah speak & the love I possess to give to others unconditionally—-still working on the unconditional part :) !
a heavy silver cast navajo cuff bracelet that my husband bought for me in a pawn shop in billings montana in the late 1990’s…it is my luck..i wear it 24/7..whenever i take it off, weird things happen, so have had it around my wrist constantly for almost 10 years…LOVEIT!!!!
I just noticed that the NYT online is saying there was a 7.8 earthquake in Western China, killing thousands. About an hour ago. I live in earthquake country myself. Any favorite possession could be smashed to smithereens and if my friends and family and I got out alive, I would be so grateful. Sometimes the news gives you perspective.
Yes, Elizabeth, you are so wise about how ephemeral possessions are. My doctor and her husband, also a physician, are traveling in China right now. When I heard about the earthquake I called her office to ask if they had heard from her. So far, no news, but her office manager said, “if she’s OK she’s helping other people.” Instead of worrying about my “stuff” I’m praying that our two dearly loved physicians are safe.
I do hope your doctor and her husband are fine—not just for you but for the obvious help they would be to others if they are anywhere near the earthquake. Still China is very big, and it would not be surprising if they were not near the epicenter at all. Sending good thoughts.
An antique squeak toy of Froggy the Gremlin, my childhood hero, because he could make adults look foolish and then disappear. I received it for my 50th birthday, which is undoubtedly a comment on how much I have matured.
Right now, just an overwhelming sense of gratitude for this gorgeous spring afternoon and having been given another Mother’s Day to spend with my sweet, dear mother. I kind of feel like Marlo; just sitting in my modest little home with my plants thriving and my dogs and cats lounging and my fresh flowers blooming, I’m peaceful, and that’s a lovely place to be.
Last week, though, my favorite possession would have to have been a little photo album of my daughters first years that was found at the perfect time. My older girl has been suffering from an eating disorder for quite some time. It is painful to witness this beautiful, talented young woman, who always brought laughter and liveliness into a room just by entering it, hating herself so much, letting another day of her life disappear in a quest to “lose weight, to have prominent collarbones, etc.”
This little album took us back to a time she had forgotten; what I think of as remembering her “essence.” We laughed together at the little preschool “fashionista” brimming with confidence, decked out with neon hair ribbons and dangly earrings, the other little girls following her lead. She did not even remember this child. When we were through, she thanked me for reminding her of this person, and we are keeping some of these photos around the house where she can see them.
Sunday she will be graduating with an Art History degree, and is already working in her field. God willing, someday soon she will believe what an extraordinary person she is.
When I read the question of the day, I privately answer it. Today I will answer on line. I said my husband, my cats Fluffy and Kate, my house, my wedding ring and family. Then someone mentioned health; I would definitely say health is a favorite thing, although mine is not perfect.
My books, my photographs (and I guess my computer, since many of the photographs are now there only), and my view. I have recently moved back to the water after many years inland and I am loving it!
People saying health, inherent humans rights made me realize how much I treasure those and my own sense of self possession. Jackie Kennedy said “Above all I am first a woman.” I love that and realize how fortunate it is to have an unshakeable sense of self.
