Liz Smith's Non-Surgical Facelift Story

No kidding, I say eye makeup. When I bother to fool with these old eyes of mine is when I go out and people demand to know if I’ve had a face lift. Visible eyebrows, eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara make a real finishing touch to one’s look. Also, I know it’s old-fashioned but you can’t beat lipstick. And not that black or bright red stuff either if you are over 40.

Just about skin here, not beauty, as I own not an iota of the latter, but for skin, stay out of the sun and NEVER wear makeup. My dermatoligist and all who meet me tell me I have the most amazing skin for almost 80; I have never in my entire life worn makeup. Get those dreadful chemicals OFF of your skin! Use nothing other than a good mosturizer, and that only at night. Makeup looks atrocious, smells bad, and makes you look phony. Wash, apply a little lipstick, and off you go! Eye makeup will ruin not only your eyesight, but give you dry eye. Throw away the makeup and simply HOURS of your time will be freed up for things you REALLY want to do!

I couldn’t disagree with you more except for the sun avoidance. Every skin is different and needs specific means of caring for it. I have always taken very good care of my skin which needs good moisturizers day and night. I have also learned (very early) the skills of make-up which if applied correctly will enhance, but not hinder. I have worn eye makeup for years and do not have dry eye. My foundation, which is expensive, blends into my skin like a second skin, looks good, and doesn’t smell bad. Applying makeup takes minutes, not hours. Good for you that you feel comfortable and look good without much fussing. Some of us like to fuss.

Me too Phyllis, My dermo tells me my skin is fantastic and I’ve worn make up and skin care for years. My skin is completely healthy and not one wrinkle or dry lines, so somethings working and if it’s just good genes, well it hasn’t hurt anything either. Women may look fine without make up but I believe, every barn can use a little paint.

Agree, Phyllis….I love makeup…to me it looks ‘finished.’ But for those who don’t like it….lucky we have choices. I am not an au natural kinda gal, just think of all the beauty we would have missed without feminine adornments: http://img.timeinc.net/time/daily/2007/0701/hepburn_0119.jpg

There is just no beating sleep, exercise, enough water (plumps up the skin), and balanced meals for beauty. Oh… and a little botox lol…

Kelly, I’m looking forward to the next visit of the Botox/Peel Fairies myself.

Listen to your favorite, feel-good music, laugh often, find the best in others, even if it seems like a difficult task. Minimalize beauty products: shea butter (L’Occitane sells a large tin that will last you forever) warmed in your hand can be rubbed into fingernail beds (it keeps your nails hydrated and breakage free), rub it into your hands to keep them youthful, elbows, feet—used on a regular basis, this stuff is great and has noticeable results. Shea is also good for undereye moisturizer, forget expensive wrinkle creams. Olive oil is fantastic in small amounts for removing makeup, especially eye makeup, and rub it into your scalp for healthy hair. Products can have multiple uses—an inexpensive, chemical-free, hair conditioner makes a great shaving lotion for legs. Benetint stain is great for lips and cheeks, and lasts all day. I am extremely pale—it helps me look as bright and healthy as I feel. I have always believed a basic vegetarian diet is the key to gastrointestinal health and keeps one centered in the rights of other living creatures with which we share our fragile planet. Keep it simple. Have one signature fragrance. (I love Lily of the Valley—and men like simple fragrances, like vanilla and lavender, on women. Ask them—it’s true.) Avoid the pretty, deceptive, expensive, department store products—you don’t need them. Find products with the least ingredients and read the labels to avoid harmful chemicals like parabens. Check your health food store for Rosa Mosqueta soap. Your face will thank you. IMHO.

Kermie….I like multiple purpose things too as prefer simple. You have some great ideas didn’t know like olive oil for hair, Rose Mosqueta soap… Bentint stain….copied them down and will try, thanks! I do like shea butter.

Keep out of the sun!!! I have not one wrinkle (yet) on my skin. Keep your hair styled—it makes all the difference when going out—even w/o makeup And don’t overuse makeup.

I stay out of the sun and use the Oil of Olay cleaning and moisturing products. My best friend is the Prescriptives mineral make-up and their under-eye cover up cream. I have a lot of allergy issues and I get those allergy black-eyes from time to time.

Unfortunately, a big factor in good skin is genes. I was a deeply tanned lifeguard every summer until I was 21, and still tan in the summer, but I have olive skin ( thank you, italian grandparents ) and very few wrinkles. However I use lots of moisturizer and alpha hydrox lotion. I’m not a big water drinker, but do drink lots of green tea, eat raw almonds, yoghurt, and lots of fruits and vegetables. I also feel that, especially as we get older, we need a little eye makeup…. unless you have the nun look going, which is OK, if that is what you want to look like. I’m not talking about gobs of makeup, just a little shadow, liner and mascara to draw attention to the youthful sparkle in you eyes, which never goes away because age is truly a state of mind. Also, whenever you are photographed, stick out your chin a little, does wonders for the neck ‘cuz we all know that is a dead age givaway !
