Liz Smith's Non-Surgical Facelift Story

No kidding, I say eye makeup. When I bother to fool with these old eyes of mine is when I go out and people demand to know if I’ve had a face lift. Visible eyebrows, eyeliner, eye shadow, mascara make a real finishing touch to one’s look. Also, I know it’s old-fashioned but you can’t beat lipstick. And not that black or bright red stuff either if you are over 40.

I haven’t tried this myself yet, but I heard through the grapevine that men can’t resist a women wearing the scent of a Planters cashew. : )

I came to the realization recently that your eyes start to go right around the time the skin on your face starts getting weird. Maybe that’s nature’s idea of being merciful and keeping us socially engaged. If we saw what was really happening, we might never leave the house again. The best beauty trick, then, is to stop renewing your eyeglass prescription.

Sun block & Nivea Cream. I recall reading about a study in which men had to judge scents (the scent containers were unlabeled). The one most men found sexiest was……(drumroll, please)…cinnamon buns! Oy vey! All my life I’ve been trying out musk, amber, myrrh, this flower & that rare ingredient, & all along all I really had to do was dab icing & cinnamon in my cleavage.

Cinnamon buns — very likely it’s the touch of vanilla, which is reminiscent of the scent of breast milk.

Glove Loofahs Smoothing out our rough and dry skin is important. When young I use to use Vaseline Intensive Care (it was the thing at the time for college students, affordable) on my skin all over. It took time. As I’ve gotten older I just dont have the time for that ritual. What helps is those loofah like “mesh” gloves. You put them on both hands, apply your favorite bath gel, soap or scrub in the shower or bath. Voila no more dry skin. Although a good overall body moisturizer is good afterwards if you have the time.

The NYT is just as bad as anyone else with the filthy newsprint, I’ve taken to wearing disposable gloves. MUST be something to do about this disgusting problem!

OK, just having washed my hands after reading the Sunday NYT and slathered on some StriVectin hand cream I think I’m in the right mind frame for this one- My best beauty tip? well, my pragmatic suggestion is the Clairsonic face brush, yeah it’s kinda pricey ($120.00) but it works beautifully to cleanse and exfoliate your skin and make it prime for any moisturizer you chose to use (which I think are more similar than the manufacturers care to have us all know, some are just better for sensitive skin that others but they all do basically the same thing IMHO). The Clairsonic is like a power toothbrush for your face, leaves your pores cleansed and tightened and ready to soak up moisture. I’ve been using it for a couple of years and have noticed more positive results with it than from any of the fancy face creams I’ve ever used. BUT, all that being said, no amount of buffing, slathering, make-up, botox, fillers, etc., can do for your looks what a simple smile and an act of kindness can do for true beauty :)

I’ve really been interested in the Clarisonic but I have acutely sensitive skin and have been concerned it would be too rough. What do you think?I treat my skin like silk and pat it dry with a special microfiber towel. Can use Retina micro which is magical and SPF 40 Clarins sunscanreen in summer and L’Occitane 20SPF with shea butter in winter. LaRochPosay cleanser or Pond’s with LaRochePosay water spray (I react to chlorine). Am 64 and have very few lines, but the sagging is there. Can’t do plastic surgery cause I have three autoimmune diseases. Eye makeup doesn’t make eyes dry; I have Sjogren’s syndrome, which causes dry eye. Love m/u, perfume, all things girlie. And have that photo of Audrey with other black and white beauties in my foyer.

Hi, Flora Dora! You know, I have pretty sensitive skin myself and the Clairsonic comes with two brushes, one for regular and a softer one for sensitive skin, I’ve only used the soft one so far. I have never responded well to Retin-A, made me peel and my skin got all red and blotchy, so I don’t know… I’m 51 and have very few lines as well, and I’m overweight which I somehow rationalize that keeping my face plump helps me look younger, haha! ah, what the mind can do :) And I love all the girly things too, anything that feels smooth on the skin, smells great, can let me play with colors on my face and enjoy how great I can look in the span of a 2 by 2 inch mirror, I’m all over it, nothing wrong with a little escapist fun sometimes.

My derm told me not even to attempt the Clarisonic; I saw her this week. Also, I can’t use regular Retina; I can only use Retina micro, which has a different delivery system and is gentler. People think Renova is gentler, but my pharmacist said it’s just Retina with a moisturizer added. I put a light night cream on top of the Retina micro. I have an extra ten lbs on me and do think it makes a difference. I had a beautiful aunt who told me "either the face or the fanny."
