America's Getting Fatter: Mississippi, Southern States Among Nation's Worst Offenders

When it comes to trimming the fat, Americans across the country are doing a really poor job.
A new study out today shows that Americans — pretty much everywhere — are getting fatter. Adult obesity rates increased in 23 states and didn’t decrease in a single state last year! And it’s not just adults who are losing the battle of the bulge. The percentage of obese and overweight children is at or above 30 percent in 30 states. That’s not good news for the future, since studies show that obese kids more than likely will turn out to be obese adults. This is yet another good reason to teach your kids good eating habits now, and to encourage exercise!
Mississippi leads the way for obese adults and kids. A whopping 44.4 percent of Mississippi kids ages 10 through 17 are technically overweight or obese, according to rankings by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Trust for America’s Health. The other fattest states and their obesity percentages include: West Virginia, 31.2 percent; Alabama, 31.1 percent; Tennessee, 30.2 percent; and South Carolina 29.7 percent. Southern states take the cake — literally — for obesity rates. Colorado, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and Hawaii had the lowest obesity rates. Here’s another number to consider: in 49 states, 1 in 5 people are obese. Two-thirds of Americans are now either overweight or obese.
Not only is this bad for our own personal health, and not only does it lead to higher cases of diabetes and other health-related problems, but it doesn’t bode well for the nation’s health-care system, either.
"Our health-care costs have grown along with our waistlines,” said Jeff Levi, Ph.D., executive director of Trust for America’s Health. "The obesity epidemic is a big contributor to the skyrocketing health-care costs in the United States. How are we going to compete with the rest of the world if our economy and workforce are weighed down by bad health?"

LL,
I love it, too. I feel sorry for all the people walking their dogs while yakking on their cell phones. They’re missing so much beauty and serenity…….and the time to THINK!
And of course Limbo Man said that the more you get fit the more taxing you are on the health care infrastructure. He claims its us fit exercising folks that are causing the cost of health care to go up. He also advocate that people should eat what they want to eat. That government should not be dictating what goes into our food, if we want to eat stuff with high flutose corn syrup, well then we should. Yes, I just love the folks that listen and follow the sound reasoning of this obese lump. He’s only a few months or years away from moving around in an electric scooter.
While I totally agree that inner city people do not have access to better quality food. When you are on a limited income you buy the necessities and fruits and veggies are actually pretty expensive as oppose to bologna, ground meat, and hot dogs, and bread. And if you shop in the grocery stores in the lower income neighborhood, you’ll find that the options are not that great. The quality of meat is low, I don’t think you’ll find anything about a Select cut of meat. To make the meat more affordable, it has more of a fat ratio than a lean ratio.
And education on the values of healthy food is nil. And since most of the lower income kids are eating school lunches, they don’t have a fighting chance either. School lunches, while offering some fruit cups and milk, are also laden with chicken nuggets, hamburger, corn dogs, ect.
But the saddest part is the group of Americans that actually have a choice but have choosen to fill their bodies with junk and more junk. The growing number of middle class Americans that are obese is unexcusable. These people have the choice of putting good food in their bodies, they have the means to pay for good food, but instead use that money to go through drive through and get take out 5-6 times per week. Their kids grow up on this stuff. I think it is appalling when the parents are themselves overweight and have allowed their kids to eat the same way their do and the kids are fat.
WHat are they doing to thier kids. Fat kids get teased, which will lower their confidense. Fat girls will never get a date, and if she does the guys will play her just for the sex and dump her. If you’re fat, you don’t have any self esteem so you’ll eat more bc food makes you happy. Try getting a decent job being fat, you’ll get the entry level but you won’t be management material.
We are all educated, thinking women here, so understand about nutrition, and can be all preachy about it. The majority of people today don’t care about nutrition, nor do they understand it. Fruits/vegetables don’t taste "good," so why bother. All of the fast food places, and "all you can eat" restaurants are everywhere and you can eat great meals at little cost. The kids love it, and why cook when you can pick up your meal there and save time? Pizza, pizza, pizza - the ads for it are on TV all the time, and you can even get fatty extras thrown in for a small charge. I grew up in a time before fast food restaurants, no freezers, so ice cream cones were a special treat reserved for special occasions. My mother didn’t work, and with no freezers all our food was fresh. Both before & after dinner we played outdoors, as there was no TV. I never saw a fat person when I was growing up. We got a lot of exercise & actually ate small healthy meals compared to today. Ever see kids playing outdoors, exercising? They don’t even have PE in schools anymore. Nobody has time to cook, as both parents (if there are 2) are working, so take-out is dinner. I seldom eat meat and am a label reader. It you could see the amount of unhealthy ingredients in stuff you’d not buy it, especially sodium. What is needed is education about nutrition, but doubt if it would be heeded as people are used to the crap they now eat and love it. This isn’t even a "class" thing, as I have a affluent friend who eats out in expensive restaurants about 4 times a week, then complains about her weight gain. I repeatedly tell her to quit eating out, and prepare her meals at home, but she doesn’t listen. I see no solution to the problem, as people will eat what tastes good no matter their income. We are becomming a nation of porkers. You should see the passing crowd at the hospital. I cannot believe the size of so many young people.
