Candice Bergen: Shoes Make the Man

Candice Bergen

Handwriting doesn’t always work as two of the best and most intelligent people I know have the cursive of a cripple. My husband, however, has beautiful, graceful, sensual handwriting. It shows a level of education, the REGION in which a person is raised, intelligence and a certain intellectual organization. Or lack of. Shoes for me speak volumes. Especially about men. And I would never even consider a man who wore certain species of shoes. Thank God, my husband walked into my apartment in an elegant pair of loafers.

what species of shoes you won’t consider?

Are you casting aspersions on neon-colored Crocs? Ha-ha! (I only wear them to do yard-work…and mine are a subdued, dark blue.) I don’t think you meant that your husband is a "loafer" himself, though.

Voice.  The timbre, cadence, depth, accent.  The father of my children and my one and only husband (Ex for many years) said to me "I will show you the world", I was putty.  Think Rhett Butler…Frankly,my dear…actually more Omar Shariffish..think Dr. Zhivago.  My children’s father is the classic Horatio Alger story and I met him going to lunch in downtown Midland, TX.  I had to teach him about shoes…he would and does say…"oh, but your mother has such a sense of style!".  I think it was auditory!

A woman’s perfume or jewelry speaks volumes to me. I had the most amazing teacher at school, an extremely elegant Jewish woman who smelt like honey and caramel and wore the most beautiful rings, necklace and bracelet (all were once her mothers). I don’t know if it will give you an accurate impression of every woman but I’ve always tried to emulate her elegance and beauty. There’s something about the way you jingle and the sent you wear that gives off the most enchanting notions. Xx

I worked in HR for years, and the man who trained me said, "Always look at their hands - they will tell you everything."  At first I didn’t get it, but after  awhile, I learned what to associate with what.  It works - more than anything I can think of…..

So what did you look for and what did they tell you?

Handwriting is deceptive.  My son is an academically gifted student, well read, travels, good school, but can’t write worth a lick!  Kind mothers, doctors and nervous teachers joked he would become a physician with that handwriting.  His ideas and prose are beautiful, but he has to keyboard most everything.  His personality?   Delightful, funny, wise beyond his years, generous and sometimes insensitive.  I pray he finds a very patient and understanding mate.

The only wearable shoes I have right now are flip flops. So shiver a lot when outside. What would you think of me? Would you think me lazy, impoverished (yes, financially I am), uncaring, free-spirited, artistic (I am), too poor to be worthy of help? Though I love being barefooted first then flip flops, then boots what I am able to wear at this time is a testimony to my resources not my personality.

I, too, am barefoot first then boots or soft comfortable shoes.  When your feet hurt it shows!!!

i love being barefooted and spent most of my childhood and adult life being that way. the only time i put shoes on at home are when i have to or when it’s cold and then it’s soft fuzzy slippers with open backs. i remember as a child not liking shoes, but wearing sensible ones that didn’t hurt and not caring about the other kids and what they were wearing. i hated blisters and wouldn’t put up with them. then of course i got silly in my 20’s and 30’s and had to kill myself with high heels or hot boots when i went out to the club. but for work i always wore sensible flats in different boring colors when i was a receptionist. thick soled tennis shoes when working on my feet.

now i just wear what is comfy as my feet have aged pretty darn hard. i cannot wear heels higher than an inch and i cannot wear anything to tight as i have disabilities that go with those feet. i’m sure candice didn’t mean to put down the poor that have no choice in what they wear. but certainly a gentleman of money going on a date with her should do his best to impress and obviously he did a darn good job of it. lol!
