A hero in the breast cancer community passed away on Tuesday at the age of 57.

Dr. Jerri Nielsen made headlines in 1999 after she diagnosed herself with breast cancer while working as the only doctor at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Research Station. While marooned there during the brutal Antarctic winter, Nielsen found a lump in her breast and performed a biopsy on herself. She then began self-administering chemotherapy treatments the U.S. Air Force had parachuted to her at the station. When the climate warmed up several months later, Nielsen was able to fly to her home state for further treatment. Her cancer went into remission, but returned in 2005 and spread to her bones, liver and, later, her brain.

Nielsen’s self-diagnosis and treatment, achievements and struggles are chronicled in her bestselling book, Ice Bound

I am sad to learn of Dr. Nielsen’s passing. Wasn’t an episode of TV’s "House"  based loosely upon her experience? (Starred Mira Sovino.)

My prayers to her family and friends, breast cancer touches so many people.

I’m betting there isn’t a person who comes to this site that doesn’t know someone  who has had breast cancer, or someone in family friend.

This cancers needs to be cured for good.

Fly with the Angels, no one deserves it more then you.

Cancer hits families from all walks of life. My mother had breast cancer then died of lung cancer that spread. I feel for Dr. Nielsen’s family because I understand what they are going through. You always hope the remission period will last. My prayers are with her family at this difficult time.

How terrible to be a dr. away from all medical facilities and know that you have cancer. How brave of her to biopsy herself and learn that she had breast cancer, then to administrate chemo on herself, so far from any help other than herself. This is a very brave woman, and it is remarkable that she survived so long before it had mets to the other organs. Her death is very sad, along with Farrah’s.

Her story is one of a true heroine.  Few have had the bare courage that she showed that awful time when she was out of touch with civilization.  NPR ran an interview with her the day before yesterday on All Things Considered when they did a tribute.  Go over and listen to it.  What a role model!

What a heroine. These are the kind of stories young girls need to hear about.
