Dr. Pat Wexler Predicts 'Cold Rooms' to Fight Fat

By Billy Norwich
Dr. Pat Wexler

ETCETERIST: I just read all about the new research published today in The New England Journal of Medicine that disproves the theory that humans lose all their brown cells — cells that act like a furnace and burn up fat — after infancy. Apparently, cold temperatures, between 61 and 66 degrees, can or might stimulate any brown cells we have and — voila! — fabulous weight loss without Oreos deprivation. What great news for a gluttonous society, but what does this mean for the medical beauty business?

DR. PAT WEXLER: It doesn’t mean spend the weekend in your freezer. But it is fascinating. I predict, after more research, the new big thing will be "cold rooms" in spas and some medical offices.

ETC: Is this really possible — brown fat cells that burn calories? Losing weight without reducing appetite?

PW: The research is fascinating. Think of the shift … Every other research has gone into stopping your appetite in order to lose weight and this research has nothing to do with appetite. It is a breakthrough.

ETC: Hmm … this could be a boon for you know who.

PW: Who?

ETC: Sarah Palin. Instead of Saint Tropez in the summer for the warmth and sea breezes the rich will want to be going to Alaska where they think they might keep better in a cold climate while losing weight.

PW: I wouldn’t sell the house in Saint-Tropez yet.

First, we have to find out what percentage of brown fat we have.  Do we all have the same amount?  Do fat people have more or less brown fat than thin people?  Can we make brown fat?  How much brown fat does it take to burn a calorie…and at what temperature?

I venture to say I’ll be dead, buried and still fat before we get those answers;-(

Another weight loss theory, another way for someone to make a buck off people trying to loose weight.

The answer is and always has been simple - eat less than you burn off. Period. Case closed.

Don’t like to be cold.  Live in an old building that is even cold in summer and it is not pleasant for this senior.  When I was younger I could cope but not now.  So I will keep my fat and do some exercise to stay limber but not be cold.  Makes me shudder to think about it.

Wouldn’t people who live in colder climates be skinnier than those who live in hotter ones then?  By what they’re saying, people in Alaska, Russia, Greenland, etc should all be thin!  And, what about work places that are always icy cold?  Just an observation  :)

Pushing away form the table helps immensely as does not ingesting anything that has high fructose corn syrup in it.  That stuff has caused more coronaries that beef fat.

We were stationed in Omaha once. Now it gets very COLD there in winter. There were a lot of fat people there. Everybody theoretically should have been thin if this is right.

I grew up on Minnesota.  Can’t say there are a lot of skinny people up there.

O K  Here is my dillemma!

My `17 yo daughter continually cries after soccer.  She is a gifted ball handler, yet work as hard as she does she cannot maintain a level of fitness and stamina that others simply arrive with!   She has (by nature) developed a bit of a trunk below her waste and blames my genetics!   I have enjoyed running as a past time in my youth, but never  really any competative endeavors.  unless you consider math club!

She is so upset and any rationalization about physique and genetics does not asuagige her distemper!

Any suggestions dears!

Constant cold or even cool temps make me very sleepy - so sleepy that I find it difficult to maintain focus well enough to be part of a conversation and may even nod off.  I wonder if the fatigue effect that cold has on me would help or hurt this theoretical brown cell activity.  I might become quite fond of attending meetings in way too cold conference rooms!
