Judith Martin: Don't Confuse Your Friend With Your Doctor
In response to: Are there things you would never tell your best friend, but would tell your doctor? And vice versa?
I would think that the definition of a bore is someone who answers her doctor’s question "How are you?" as if the doctor were her best friend, and who answers her best friend’s question "How are you?" as if the friend were her doctor.

I told my doctor that when he asks that question as a greeting he should know if I were well I wouldn’t be there to see him. I usually say "okay"; when I say "Great" with a smile people do notice. It has just become an automatic greeting, what is wrong with "hello?" And that other remark "have a nice day" is another one of those remarks made without thought. When did all this start?
