Liz Smith's First Honeymoon With Sex on the Beach, No-See-Ums

Liz Smith

I spent an entire night on the beach in St. Martin making love in the sand under a full moon with a real shipwreck silhouetted at the ocean’s edge near us. I thought this was the max, as I was very infatuated. The next day, covered with no-see-um bites, I had second thoughts.

But then I also had the same romantic feelings nestled in the pure-white sand dunes at the Alamogordo National Park in New Mexico. We buried beer and wine bottles in the pure-white grains of gypsum and they became ice cold, but we were hot, hot, hot. This is a beautiful and magical and very otherworldly place and I don’t think they let people spend the night there anymore. But at the time it was primitive, undiscovered and exotic – and it was only 90 miles from where they exploded the first Atomic Bomb.

I was on my first marriage honeymoon so I thought it was just great!

The idea of sex on a beach is far more thrilling than the reality! sand everywhere! I’d rather have some really great quality cotton sheets!  LOL

I’m with you, Lucinda.  Blame the movie "From Here to Eternity". If I’m right,  Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr were the lovers rolling about on the sand, while waves broke against their bodies.  What a preposterous idea it planted in lovers everywhere, that making love on the sand was sexy!  No, no, no.  It’s like having sandpaper rubbed against your most tender parts. Add to that salt water if you’re on an ocean beach. Lovemaking outdoors IS sexy on top of a nice blanket, watching the stars, being part of nature as God ordained.  Ah, I remember Capitol Reef, Sedona, Yosemite, and so many other places where sharing physical love became a form of prayer…

You’re right, OE. That is who they were.
