Liz Smith's First Honeymoon With Sex on the Beach, No-See-Ums

I spent an entire night on the beach in St. Martin making love in the sand under a full moon with a real shipwreck silhouetted at the ocean’s edge near us. I thought this was the max, as I was very infatuated. The next day, covered with no-see-um bites, I had second thoughts.

But then I also had the same romantic feelings nestled in the pure-white sand dunes at the Alamogordo National Park in New Mexico. We buried beer and wine bottles in the pure-white grains of gypsum and they became ice cold, but we were hot, hot, hot. This is a beautiful and magical and very otherworldly place and I don’t think they let people spend the night there anymore. But at the time it was primitive, undiscovered and exotic – and it was only 90 miles from where they exploded the first Atomic Bomb.

I was on my first marriage honeymoon so I thought it was just great!

Candice Bergen Recommends Florence

I have been in some of the most romantic places on earth with some of the most contentious, argumentative guys, so I would say the spot is irrelevant. But before we married, my first husband took me to Florence and it was divino. It was my first time there and we left no stone unturned. In fact, I spent my birthday there and we sat in a small field on top of a hill and he counted 34 field daisies for me. My husband of nine years today is one of the last of the romantics and he really goes all out. He loves to plan trips, is a great traveler and travels in terrific style. And he is such an enthusiast that everything is exciting and fun.

Why Mary Wells Advises Lovers to Vacation in Italy

I have spent much of my life in beautiful places — very much by design — but I read once that the lust of first love and romance lasts at the very longest for 18 months and that is a rare blessing. After that, lust evolves into a different emotion or flits out the window. So even if you are in a delicious, romantic place, if the lust doesn’t last, it doesn’t last. I think you stand a better chance of a romantic vacation and of keeping the lust alive in Italy. They are so enthusiastic.

Joan Ganz Cooney on Romance: Singin' and Cruisin' With Nat King Cole

I think of all the romantic places I’ve been with my husband, the best was Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat on the French Riviera. I adored the little restaurants on the water that we went to at night in nearby villages. But the most romantic times I ever had were in convertibles with Nat King Cole singing "Mona Lisa" on the radio or Sinatra singing anything, driving along the Pacific Coast or in the Arizona dessert with charming and handsome young men, almost all of whom I remember with great fondness.

My uncle and aunt live on a lake, at night they go out on the porch and listen to the loons…I’ll think of you and the hubs like that in your boat!

Capri. Think late afternoon, white, chalky rocks warm at our backs, a turquise sea calm below us. There was pale white wine, fresh-baked bread, a ripe, mellow cheese and some perfectly ripe peaches. Not one word was said. No need.

Spending a week in Cuba during the winter of 2008, was definitely one of my most romantic adventures!  My senses tingle with the memories of being on that exotic, warm, and sensual island so close to home, and yet from decades past.  There were moments when I felt that I was in a movie from the forties or in a time capsule that hadn’t yet been opened, and moments when I wanted to join the late night dancers up on the dance floor in their tropical costumes reveling in the flexibility of their bodies.

At that time, the person on the street didn’t have a cellphone.  Since then, I understand that cellphones are cropping up everywhere.

Everything about the trip was intriguing, opening my senses to new smells, tastes, and ideas.  Visualize dinner for two on a tiny balcony off the third story of a partially restored nineteenth century house, cooked and served by the family, while being serenaded by local music from the open windows and doors—all under a starry, moonlit, tropical sky.

Then there’s the intriguingly complicated history; learning other accounts of the stories…

Although I didn’t experience this place with someone I love, I found the view of the Golden Gate Bridge from Telegraph Hill at sunset to be pure magic (and full of romantic potential). I hope to return there someday and share it with someone I love!

Definitely Puerto Rico. It was my first time on a beach and seeing the ocean up close and personal. The setting was romantic, too bad I wasn’t with a man that made the experience romantic for me. He was a dud in that aspect.
