Mr. wOw's Hair-Raising Shriver Report

What’s distracting Mr. wOw from paying full attention to what Maria Shriver is saying?

I love Maria Shriver. She is genuine and smart and one of the great Kennedys — I wish she could or would take her late Uncle Ted’s Senate seat. I watched her all weekend and into Monday, hawking her new study, "The Shriver Report: A Woman’s Nation Changes Everything." She is impressive. And the study is vital reading. But … her hair.

Kill me for the shallow Mr. W. I am. I know she said wonderful and important things about women in the workplace. Yet, despite her eloquence, I could not stop gazing at, contemplating her auburn mane. It is enormous. It’s Raquel Welch’s old hair on steroids. It has a life of its own. And quite a healthy, vigorous life, if one assumes — and I do — that it’s all Maria, and there are no nasty Britney-like extensions woven in. Perhaps because the always-slim Maria is now even thinner, her hair just looks more overwhelming. I’d advise trimming it, or battening it down somehow, but over the years that forest of follicles has become something of a trademark. Would we even know who Maria Shriver was if she sported a simple pageboy or a modest flip? Anyway, those majestic cheekbones and that firm iron jawline need a backdrop. It doesn’t work, really. But it does. You know what I mean.

To be perfectly honest, Mr. wOw is rapidly balding, and holding on to what’s left in a most undignified way. To look at a full head of hair is both a torment and a nostalgic pleasure. Maria Shriver supplies agony and ecstasy.

I have one of those "manes" that is hard to tame, if you cut it short and loosen the weight it only becomes harder to tame. Not to mention it grows at a rate which is way too fast. The long she probably finds much more manageable. Going above the shoulders would be a daily war for most people, but she probably has a hairdresser that could fight it for her.

Mr. Wow,

I was also distracted by Ms. Shriver’s mane!  I assumed she has extensions.  Somehow that amount of hair just doesn’t seem genuine on a woman of her age.

The extensions are the "rage" now. Another ugly. No it doesn’t seem genuine, and surely is not age appropriate.

I, of the wimpy hair, am insanely jealous of Maria Shriver or anyone else — male or female — who has been blessed with anything even approaching a "mane."  I was so fixated on Shriver’s hair I remember wishing I could just put my hands on/in it.  The last time I had hair you couldn’t see daylight through, was in the late 60’s when women’s wigs (both real and the wash-n-wear synthetic ones) were the rage.  What a boon to working women.  Every woman in the office where I worked owned at least 2!

If she likes her hair, so be it. There is always something to criticize about anybody in the public eye.  Sure glad I’m not there - I’d be crucified by morning…awk!

By the way mr. wOw…..those are extensions or clip ins of real hair (most likely from India $$$$) to make her already great head of hair even fuller!  Maria is a very smart woman, but not so easy on people that have worked for her!  She is on the very controlling spoiled side in her real life. but she’s so wealthy and powerful that no one can ever stand up to her about the mistreatment or else repercussions!  Two of my friends have worked with her and My other friend was a contractor that worked for Arnie over the years!  She also needs a medal for putting up with Arnie…nuff said if ya know what I mean!

She’s very friendly on-camera. Not so friendly off-camera.  He is basically the same way. They deserve each other I suppose. The rest of us don’t deserve either of them.

Maria’s hair detracts from her marvelous personna. It’s dated bimbo Hollywood overlong hair buffed up with additional hairpieces.  These fake "falls" keep sneaking out of a huge mass of hair that accomplishes nothing but distracting from her message.

It’s "in" right now in Entertainment Land, and out in Paris and the real world.  Shriver doesn’t need tons of hair. She’s brilliant and has great ideas that I want to hear. And yes, I find the hair gets too much attention.

Maria is proud of all that hair…but wouldn’t you think being out covering her book and the talk networks she could have have a lovely loose ponytail with a soft ribbons around it?  Instead it was all over her shoulder and chest why?  All you see saw was HAIR.

A lot of what Maria is saying is very interesting but her hair is a distraction.  That huge mane of hair is everywhere this week.

I agree with you Mr. Wow, I was really into what they were all talking about but found myself completely mesmerized by the hair… (I admit I’m a little hair obsessed right now as I am post chemo and just growing mine back, I have fuzz so far, not actually hair).  I’m going to see Maria in person at the Women’s Conference on Monday and I hope I don’t go and get all distracted over it again :)

Dear Dora…it’ll probably come back in darker or curly or ten times as thick.  I’ve had friends who’ve gone through your ordeal, and getting the hair back—sometimes even better than the first version—was, of course, a big deal.  As for Ms Shriver’s tresses, in person it might not look so overwhelming.  Or, it might take over the room!   Good luck, honey. And good health.

Hi! thanks for the reply and the good wishes, and yes, I’ve heard it’s supposed to be thicker and curlier and since that’s the type of hair I had to begin with I keep laughing at the thought of it being even more so, I get the sense I’m going to go from bald to Chaka Khan in one fell swoop :)

And BTW, I really enjoy reading your posts, the perfect mix of smart commentary, a little dish and style critique, love it.
