Oxana Malaya Should Advise Latest Russian Girl Found Raised by Dogs

A three-year-old Russian girl found last month naked and crawling like a dog after being neglected by her alcoholic mother is being compared to Oxana Malaya, the feral child who was also raised by dogs until the age of eight, in 1991. The Russian media reports that "Medina" only knew two words — yes and no — when authorities found her on all fours growling and eating like an animal. The girl’s mother was reportedly an alcoholic — too drunk to care for her daughter.

Her story closely mirrors Malaya’s life.

Malaya, from the Ukraine, was three years old when she disappeared from her alcoholic parents’ home and found shelter in a shed inhabited by dogs. She eventually took on traits similar to those of the animals she was living with — she began barking and growling, and developed stronger senses of smell, sight and hearing.

Malaya was discovered five years later, at age eight, and doctors first said it would be difficult for her to adjust to everyday life. Doctors believed that if a child doesn’t learn how to speak by age five, it becomes increasingly harder to learn the language. As of 2006, Malaya was living in a home for the mentally disabled and had once had a boyfriend.

A documentary for British Channel 4 documented her story — and her reunion with her father —  the biological one, not the paternal, but we think both of them are animals.

It’s hardly all Russians.  Not even close.

But invariably, the most fascinating stories I’ve ever hear come out of Rusiian.  That’s all meant to say.

Zenka:  It’s hardly all Russians.

I’m sure.  A question: under Russia’s form of government, does the state give an allotment to families based on the number of children they have?  If not today, but under Communism?

Hell, when my son was 3 years old after watching "The Lady and the Tramp" for the first time, I couldn’t get him to stop barking when he was outside in the back yard for over a year! That’s only after a 90 minute cartoon!

My 2 l/2 year old grandson does the same thing….he loves Scooby Doo and Lady and the Tramp.   As a result he is one heck of a good barker!   I love children so much and not just little ones….big ones, too.   As a mother, it is extremely difficult for me to process that children are abused and neglected.

I watched a movie last night "The Constant Gardener" which depicted children in Sudan.   Breaks my heart.  Hard to believe that there are  children all over the world who are not lovingly cared for and are put in harm’s way.

I always wonder about these stories…

Who was bringing food to the dogs?  Left on their own, dogs will run in packs, they’ll make a kill and eat it in the field.  Parts of the story are illogical, although I don’t doubt that the child was grossly neglected and found companionship, and warmth with the family dogs.  Naked in Russia is not a good thing.

I have strong opinions about abortion, but in this case women like this, who give birth but don’t mother their children should have been aborted! I don’t pity her, I don’t feel sorry for her or her lot in life. I don’t want to hear about how some people go through tough times, she is scum and should be put in a position to live as her little girl did!

This disgusts me! Women who give birth as if it is nothing more than having a bowel movement. Pushing something out of their bodies without any regard to what happens once it is expelled.

As a teacher of children with special needs, some years ago I had a child raised by a cognitively disabled mother and grandmother. She didn’t know what toilet paper was, ate off the floor, etc. like Helen Keller did in the "Miracle Worker". When she became upset she growled like a dog and crawled on the floor trying to bite me. Her speech was limited also with just 1-2 word utterances, no complete sentences. Needless to say after working extensively with her during the school year- (forget academics, she had greater needs than that), I had the stressful and gut wrenching experience to have to testify in court as to why she should be permanently removed from the home becoming a ward of the state. So, these cases are not just in "other" countries. Check with some caseworkers in your own community- you’d be surprised!
