George Sodini, Gym Shooting | 08/06/2009 10:10 am

Pennsylvania Gym Shooter George Sodini Had Pent-Up Rage Toward Women (Video)

Videos and online diaries of 48-year-old gunman show he was a disturbed man who hadn’t had a date in years, and who clearly had trouble connecting with women.

We’re hearing more disturbing news coming out of Pennsylvania after a reclusive gunman walked into a local gym with three guns, killing three women, wounding nine others, then killing himself.

Everyone is trying to understand the motives behind 48-year-old gunman George Sodini of Carnegie, PA, which is just a few miles from the L.A. Fitness Club where his Tuesday rampage took place. What we now know, however, is that Sodini’s run of bad luck with women seems to have fueled his hatred for them.

Sodini made videos of himself in which he talked about his difficulty connecting with women, how he was trying to be more "emotional" for them and how he just doesn’t understand why women don’t like him, and posted the videos on YouTube. In one of the videos, books on how to date women can be seen. "My objective is to be real and to be emotional … because when I’m ten to 20 years older than she is, she has to feel good about this thing," Sodini says in one video.

ABC News reports
that Sodini briefly considered halting his shooting, according to his online blog. He wrote that if a particular woman he admired would be his girlfriend, he would "cancel this plan or put [it] on hold, at least for a while." We still don’t know who that woman is.

"At the gym I saw a woman I like. I see her at the park-and-ride sometimes, so she isn’t a stranger. Occationaly [sic] she makes good eye contact and smiles, etc. She is maybe 40ish, and attractive to me," Sodini wrote. "I made brief conversation to her and a younger woman she was with today. To get a friend like her (and for night time action) I would cancel this plan, or put on hold, at least for a while."

Sodini’s website diary even referred to his plan to randomly kill women and himself. He said he hadn’t had sex since 1990. The Philadelphia Enquirer says the often rambling entries showed a man full of hopelessness, one who loathed women, religion, his family, blacks, coworkers, life and himself. Police said Sodini once belonged to a church but stopped attending after an incident in 2006, during which a pastor said he had "overreached" with a woman.

"It’s of no surprise to me that he’s targeting women … the leader of this [exercise] class was about to be a mother," one mental-health expert told MSNBC this morning, adding that perhaps Sodini’s own mother treated him poorly. "It’s this perfect storm of having severe depression, mild rage, he felt like he was being bullied."

Patricia Cowen lived across the street from George Sodini. She learned that he wrote about her daughter, referring to her as "a long haired, hot little hottie with a beautiful bod." The thought that this man lived so close to her family and was watching them was "devastating," she told CBS News.

"It’s just so overwhelming," Cowen said. "Just the idea of somebody like that thinking like that for a young girl. My daughter is a college student, and, you know, just to think if I would lose somebody like that, I don’t know what I would do."

This horrible tragedy happened at a gym, where we go to work out some stress and try to relax. Does this shooting make you question the safety and comfort level at your own gym?

Here’s one video Sodini made, during which he talks about trying to find a woman:

This is what is so frightening.  He looks like a typical person you might sit next to on a bus.  It is beyond comprehension that he could occupy himself with mundane chores day after day and year after year.  What is really sad is he had no one who cared if he existed.  It makes me wonder how many dangerous and desolate people, having abandoned hope long ago, walk among us.

It is easy, I suppose, to say he should have sought out help.  But when people are so far down and so disconnected from reality, that may not be possible.

It’s not just about a gym, so no, I do not question safety there.  It has happened just about anywhere and at any time.  As long as we continue to be a society that arms itself with all manner of guns, assault weapons, etc, this tragedy will continue.

The idiots behind guns, guns, guns!  I am not sure the law behind getting guns in PA and I have not heard the guns this man used were not obtain legally so he passed whatever test he needed…I am not making excuses for this sick man in anyway and I hope he is rotting in hell for what he did which really is not Christian of me to want that but oh well I’ll deal with it…

Guns just lay there harmless until someone decides to use them for wrong…its not the guns fault, guns dont have feelings or actions, they are handled by humans and we all know humans arent perfect. I have never known a gun to walk into a gym or a classroom and shoot people - its the humans behind the guns.

You could say that about nuclear weapons too, they just lay there harmless until someone decides to use them for wrong.

Yes your right…however nuclear weapons can leak, guns dont leak bullets.  DeB, I am not saying that guns are good but I like my right to have a gun in my house for protection.  I do not want that right taken away from me or anyone else I know.  Is it too easy to get assault weapons and guns, YES, do we need better laws, YES, so let Obama work on that…give us better laws, I’d vote for it.  Maybe after healthcare he can move on to this issue…Just dont take it away - dont say as a homeowner I can’t protect myself in my home if someone decides to break in when they know I am home with my daughter…I have said it one and I’ll say it again - if you have the nerve to break into my house with 2 dogs, 1 a 70 lb pit bull, IF you make it past him you will not make it out of my house alive.  You are there to harm me or my child - if you wanted just my stuff you would know when I was or wasnt home - if you break in knowing I am home and my hubby is not - you will not make it out or a man will make it out but he will be singing soprano for the rest of his life.

Dear C Hardy,

When this type of story breaks and the media jumps all over it, there are the usual remarks such as "ban guns", and "The Second Amendment has nothing to do with it", etc.  But your reply is certainly the most frightening I have seen yet.   Do you really think that your revolver or semi-auto, etc., is somehow going to remain safe and untouched and not going to be affected when any new laws are finally pushed through by this administration?

And your use of the term "Assault Weapon" proves that you have at best, only a basic knowledge about firearms and probably less knowledge about existing fiream laws.

For years people have been trying to explain why the "assault weapons" issue is a fraud.  My guess is, you haven’t even bothered to read anything about this subject.  So before you give your blessing to Obama to address the gun issue after the healthcare issue, I hope that you wil spend even a few minutes researching this very subject.  You can do a Google search on "Assault Weapons Fraud" or "Assault Weapons Hoax" and find a lot of information about it.  Again, I hope that you do this before you help pave the way for any degree of collective disarmament.

As for this terrible crime, I have no words.  I only have a terrible sadness for the families and perhaps even pity for this poor soul who did not seek help with his problems.  Who took his hatred out on innocent women.

WOW Paul what a back handed slap if I have ever seen one…I know enough to know that I dont like assault weapons.  I have shot them and have friends who own them and yes Im sorry but a gun that I can guy in a store that can shoot that many bullets in a minute should not be available.  You can agree to disagree with me on that one - I am one for gun control but I am also one for keeping guns a right not a privledge.  My trip to Canada coming up we cant take our weapon across the border…to me that is scary b/c now my only line of defense is - well nothing…Please dont make assumptions that I dont know anything about a subject just b/c I dont use the words you want to see.

Dear C. Hardy,

My most sincere apologies to you if my remarks seemed a back handed slap.  In all honesty, I meant nothing of the sort.  It’s just that I have been battling the "assault weapons" fraud since it began in the middle 1980’s.  And it is at times, terribly frustrating.  Please let me explain….

What these ‘so called’ "assault weapons" are….are nothing more than firearms, that while based upon the same initial design that a military rifle is also based upon,….in the civilian sector, (e.g., those found in your local gun store), are strictly and ABSOLUTELY limited in their functionality, to what civilians can own.  In fact, they are so strictly limited in their functionality, that not one single military in the world uses any of them.

The confusion that exists about them is due to the following:

1) In the latter part of the twentieth century, all modern military’s began using machine guns.  Regardless of what design they chose, they began using machine guns or "fully automatic" weapons.

2) Machine guns have been banned in this country from civilian ownership since 1934.  That’s over 75 years.  Unless you have a Federal license, permission from the BATF and live in a state that allows machine gun ownership (which is few and far between), you can’t own a machine gun.  And even in those few states that allow machine gun ownership, unless you are affiliated with law enforcement or the military, you won’t even come close to being able to own a machine gun.

3) Sadly, most people in this country, including many, many gun owners, don’t know that machine guns have been banned from civilian ownership.  So, when people hear the word "assault weapon", they think they’re the same machine guns that the military uses.  For example, when a newscaster on CNN states that "an AK-47 was used", most people think it’s the machine gun that the Russian Military uses, or that terrorists use.  They think it’s a machine gun.

Getting people to think "machine gun" is about 99% of what the "assault weapons" fraud is about.  The other 1% of the population have been duped into believing that somehow, the black plastic stock and the more obtrusive pistol style grip, somehow….A) makes the gun more deadly, or, B) somehow makes the gun more rapid firing, or, C) somehow makes the owner go nuts and want to shoot up the neighborhood.

The "assault weapons" fraud was created by none other than Josh Sugarman of the Violence Policy Center, who stated the following in 1984:

"The weapons menacing looks, coupled with the fact that most people don’t know the difference between semi-automatic and fully-automatic…. that they’ll think they’re machine guns, can only increase our chances of banning them".

This statment is from the country’s most notorious gun banner.  A person who wants EVERY gun banned, period.

Please understand something else.  The "designs" that these so called "assault weapons" are derived from….are not any more deadly, nor more rapid firing, nor more sinister, nor more evil, than any other firearm.  They are just better designs.  The most state-of-the-art, the most easily maintained, the most rugged, the most reliable, etc.  You can repair them yourself.  They break down more easily, they are more easily cleaned, etc.  Which makes them very desirable to any civilian looking for a high quality, modern design, firearm.

Again, my most sincere apologies for what seemed like a back handed slap.  I meant nothing of the sort.  It’s just that I have known so many people whose lives have been affected terribly….simply because they own a firearm that some "politician" has deemed unacceptable.  However, I still invite you, I even implore you, to research why the "assault weapons" issue is nothing but a very clevery crafted fraud.  There is all this information out there and I hope you look at it.

As for not being able to take your guns across the border into Canada, you should try living in the state where I live.  I won’t say where it is but it is without a doubt the WORST place imaginable to own guns.  And rather than move, I have chosen to stay and fight for my Second Amendment rights.  I hope you never have to go through what we have to go through here.

Paul - Thank you for your information.  Thankfully I am one of those that do know the difference and for me personally I just dont like them…I dont want to take anyone else’s right away from having them just a little harder to get one.  I feel for those who have to fight for their right to own guns - and I feel safe knowing that with my husbands job there will always be at least 1 gun in my house.  I grew up with guns in the house & I am raising a daughter with guns in our house.  She knows, even at 3, not to even come close to them.  It really burns me up that people find it so much easier to blame a gun - an object - and not the person behind that gun.  This guy was mental - he was going to hurt those women some how some way - it could have been worse -

I guess that there are those that are not aware of the art of killing without a weapon….they only use body parts.

Straight jackets for all!!!!! Keep those killing hands and arms in place!!!! Leg chains as well!!!! Make sure they can’t kick a nose into a brain!!!

Maybe Sotomayor can see to that….

Pretty difficult to kill three people in a crowded gym and wound a dozen others and then take yourself by using only body parts. I think you may be watching too many Matrix movies
