Study: Exercise Helps Reduce 'Bad' Cholesterol in Women

Just one more reason to get off the couch and hit the gym or the great outdoors — your heart will thank you!

We all knew exercise was good for our health, but we’re now finding out hitting the pavement or the gym is actually even better for us women than it is for men.

An article in the August issue of Journal of Lipid Research talked about the results of a long-term study of more than 8,700 men and women ages 45-64, which provided race- and gender-specific data on the cholesterol effects of physical activity. The study showed that women, particularly black women, experience greater benefits as a result of exercise than men. At least an extra half hour of moderate activity per week resulted in higher levels of "good" HDL cholesterol for all, but the "bad" LDL cholesterol levels were significantly decreased in women, particularly menopausal and black women.

Just one more reason to get off that couch and go for a walk. Your heart will thank you!

This is so true - the results of my last lab work showed that my normally high ‘good’HDL was even higher. The nurse who called me with my results said that obviously I work out because the same results show for all physically active women. I found that information quite encouraging.

What I found discouraging was my doctor’s reaction to my weight: ‘I guess it’s OK if you’re comfortable with that number’. I really don’t care about the number, I care more about the fact that my size 8 jeans are getting loose, that I have less jiggle and more definition in my arms and abs and that I still eat a normal variety of foods, including some completely sinful ones on occasion!

As a long time runner … well, until I broke my foot .. I encourage all walkers/runners to invest in the best shoes you find affordable.  Go to a sports facility where they will measure and diagnose your feet.  They will make a shoe recommendation that will pay off and also could help prevent injuries.

The ONLY thing I know FOR sure is that the older I have gotten, the more urgent it is for me to try to exercidse every single day.  If I don’t, I feel it in decreased energy and let’s face it ladies, when you are in your 50’s… air puts on weight :-(  No more excuses… get your big fat arse’s off your comfortable recliners and sweat!

Women may experience greater cholesterol-lowering benefits than men, but exercise does wonders for everyone. My cholesterol - including the triglycerides - dropped every time I got back into a good swimming & karate routine.

Ditto, James. I cannot exist without swimming - my body demands the water. At my age, I have NO plack in my arteries, and the cholesterol, LDL, HDL and BP are all perfect. Its trying to survive doctors who don’t know what to do that’s my challenge in life. People with NMDs are at a serious risk in the USA.

Glad you have no plaque, C Jay. I agree…there are a lot of quacks out there.

Finding out was no fun, though - they were onto the wrong ‘system.’ sheesh. Quacks, there are flocks of them!

Well, you know my story, C Jay. I went in for outpatient surgery, and came within one minute of checking out permanently.

Sheesh, same here, but they gave me 2 drugs on my ‘ALLERGY" red armbands, and I did "check out" during the time I was being "electrically" stopped! Worse, they later took me to a floor, not ICU, and no one knew I was there, apparently - or the charge nurse is lying, thus I had no help.

Cost of healthcare? It cost to have me flown to another region for emergency care because I demanded it, never wanting to go near those people, again.

I didn’t cause it; in fact, each had in hand, papers on what and how to care for me in specific situations by the world expert! There are no excuses for such neglect.
