Timothy Wright, Famed Pastor and Gospel Singer, Dies at 61
The Rev. Timothy Wright, who touched people near and far with his larger-than-life gospel vocals and passionate teachings, died early Thursday.
Wright, 61, a prominent New York pastor and Grammy-nominated gospel singer, has been fighting for his life since July 4, 2008.
Wright was driving home from a Church of God in Christ conference in Detroit with his family when their vehicle was struck by a car going the wrong way. Wright’s wife, Betty, 58, and grandson, D.J., 14, died in the crash, and Wright has been in critical condition since. The driver of the other car also died in the accident.
Wright was the minister of Grace Tabernacle Christian Center Church of God in Christ, in Brooklyn, but he didn’t just touch the lives of his congregation. For those who grew up in church, you have probably heard or have sung one of his songs. Some of his best-known gospel hits include "Come Thou Almighty King," "We Need a Miracle," "Been There Done That" and "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus."
We would like to believe that the devoted family man, also known as the "The Godfather of Gospel," has been reunited with his wife and grandson.
