Question of the Day | 09/15/2009 5:00 am

Putting aside matters of law, criminality and ethics, what three people would you nominate to be offed?

The director John Huston ‘liked to advance the theory that everybody should be allowed three murders,’ according to his daughter Allegra. Join the conversation with Sheila Nevins, Judith Martin, Joan Juliet Buck, Liz Smith and Joan Ganz Cooney.

Who Would Liz Smith Like to See 'Offed'?

I am allowed three murders? Can I take out "groups" the world over? Well, then No. 1, all the torturers of children. Two, all the torturers of animals. And three, all the idiots talking on cell phones on buses, in the streets, in doctors’ waiting rooms, in taxis and generally in public where I have to listen to them whether I want to or not.

Joan Ganz Cooney Would Take Out the Taliban and More

I’m with Liz — I’d take out all those who harm children or animals. Then I’d turn to terrorists the world over who like to kill lots of innocent people and take them out, and then I’d turn to the Taliban and all those clowns out there who so mistreat women.

Sheila Nevins on Metaphors and Murder

No one should kill anyone. You should examine your motives for murder and work on changing those who deserve it. An eye for an eye never gets anything done and stops progress in its tracks. Kill a Bin Ladin and you breed 1000 more Bin Ladins with appropriate motives. Sorry Mr. Huston – you probably meant it metaphorically anyway.

Judith Martin and Murderous Landscapes

At the risk of sounding like a wimp among all you social reformers, it’s not just the law that stops me from killing people. I really don’t think murder is a nice idea. But I am grateful for the law, because the corpses littering the landscape would not be those of molesters and terrorists but your neighbors who speak too loudly on their cell phones and your relatives who drive too slowly in the left-hand lane.

Joan Juliet Buck: Let Fate Do the Dirty Work

I know this is lazy and squeamish, but I prefer to let life, fate and justice do the dirty work for me.

Wow, offing people?  Sorry, can’t participate, even theoretically.  I’d rather use those ergs of energy to see if I can contribute to world harmony.  I can’t change others, I can only change myself, I guess so that someone doesn’t plan to off me.

Yeh… I used to love this site.

I keep checking in, hoping to find the sort of bright, witty conversation that got this wonderful concept off the ground, but lately it seems it’s just one silly cat fight after another on every thread.  (Yes, I said cat fight.)

I don’t necessarily blame the moderators for the lack of grace on the part of some of this site’s visitors, but this topic??  Who would we kill??  Really??

So sad to see another fine idea jumping the shark.

John Huston was great director/writer.  I read once that before filming began on The Night of the Iguana, he presented to each of his four stars (Gardner, Burton, Kerr and Lyon) a silver bullet …. indicative for the moments when each might want to "kill" the other or even him.  Good story …. truth or not.

I am not a non-violent human being even though I would probably weep over a killer if I should have to attend an execution.  Nor am I a Madam deFarge who could while away the hours between executions by knitting a chronicle of the condemned.  However, I agree with the broad concept that any who harm children or the helpless do not deserve a long life.  Any person who kills for pleasure forfeits his right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness.

It is for this very reason that people have formed governments and wrote out their own Bill of Rights so that communities can protect themselves and protect their citizenry from vigilantism by having courts of laws and rules of justice.  We are supposed to be protected from our own cries of vengeance by the community enacting punishment on those who harm us, our families or our community or country.  Trial by twelve good men and women has generally proven to be a good system.

I recognize the fact that the question posed today is a  "tongue in cheek" avenue to list those folks who really irritate us the most.  However, my first thought was for all those folks who have suffered grievous harm while their perpetrators spend little time in prison or "get off" with no punishment.  We truly do live in a time when the "victim-hood" of the abuser reigns supreme within our courts and the true victim is little remembered.

Im sorry WOW readers but I would have to say…those who can kidnap a child and then rape and kill them…sorry if given the chance I could off them.  Those such as Vick and the lady who roasted a live kitty just because, sorry I may be able to off them also…But I agree if you take out the head terrorist there are already 10 waiting to take their place.

I don’t believe that an eye for and eye ever worked. Pedophiles should all be castrated, add to this the rapists. I don’t believe in capital punishment, so I can’t go after murderers either.I just figured out that these 3 offers are not for me. Sorry John Houston….oh I forgot, years ago I would gladly have shot my first husband.

Castrating rapists would not work - they would still do it.  Rape is about power not sex.

This reminds me of an episode of The New Twilight Zone called "Button, Button."  A couple in financial straights is offered a bunch of money if they would just push a button on a box.  The thing is, when they push the button, someone, whom they don’t even know, will die.  They agonize over it for a few days and ultimately they push the button, the guy comes to give them the money and take the box.  She asks what happens next and he says, "I’ll make the offer to someone else.  Someone you don’t even know…"

WOw, interesting.  Not sure how they can drag that into a full length movie.  But I’d see it.  It’s a thought-provoking concept.

This question really doesn’t work because we are all experienced enough in life to know that ‘actions have consequences’, regardless of the offer of three free kills. Please try to make your theorectical questions more in the category of fun. It will inspire more creative thought.
