Morgan Freeman was born June 1, 1937, in Memphis, TN. He made his film breakthrough in 1987 with a chilling performance as a pimp in "Street Smart," a role that earned him best supporting actor awards from the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association and the National Society of Film Critics, in addition to an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. He also was nominated for Academy Awards as best actor for his performances as a long-suffering chauffeur in the sentimental drama "Driving Miss Daisy" (1989) and as a prison inmate in "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994). On his fourth nomination, for his role as an aging boxing trainer in director Clint Eastwood's"Million Dollar Baby" (2004), Freeman finally won an Oscar when he was voted best supporting actor.
