Beth Levine: An Influential Designer's Life in Shoes (Photos)

Manolo Blahnik once said, ‘Beth Levine is without a doubt the most influential American shoe designer of the 20th century. She is to shoes what Eames is to furniture.’

Photo Essay

Beth Levine (December 31, 1914 - September 20, 2006) was designing stunning shoes long before Christian Louboutin and Jimmy Choo became household names. In a glossy new tome, Beth Levine Shoes, author Helene Verin pays tribute to one of the pioneers of feminine footwear. High-profile women — including First Ladies Patricia Nixon, Lady Bird Johnson and Jacqueline Kennedy, as well celebrities Barbra Streisand, Shirley MacLaine and Marilyn Monroe — have donned Levine’s divine designs. Here, wowOwow pays tribute to “the first lady of American shoe design” with this photo essay of stunning images of fabulous shoes found in the book.

I agree, great photos. If you take the boots, I need the gingham mules!

Love the name of those… Ballin’ the Jack!  Wonder if our creator had a story behind those names?

Beth’s design theory: I design shoes not because you need them but because you want them. She completely understood her target market!!

Those are adorable.  I love mules anyway because I like to able to kick my shoes off and put them back on with a minimum of effort.  I could totally see myself wearing those.

Complete with the ‘Spring-o-lator’ technology! I think I would live in those from May through September. The ease of in/out is an important factor in shoe choice for me as well. Flipflops are my indoor choice year-round. Old Navy makes it possible to completely match my ‘slippers’ to my robe.

Down at the bottom of the screen is a link that says "Contact Us".  When you hit that link, it sends a little message to the Community Manager/aka Site Monitor and they can help you with just about anything.  :)  Welcome to WOW~

I WANT!!!! (Don’t you hate it when you see something that you didn’t even know you wanted - and then you want it truly, madly, deeply?) I WANT!!!!

I love all of these.  It’s interesting that virtually any of them could be very stylishly worn today even though they were designed in the 1950s and 1960s.  I love the lavender color of the first pair.  I’m kind of drawn to the kabuki shoes.  Very simple but with the right outfit I think they would be stunning.

Yep, they are all way ahead of their time.  Or is it that each generation thinks they’ve invented style?  Hmmm.
