Candice Bergen, AARP Cover Girl, Speaks Out

Candice Bergen
Geezerdom. I got such shit for appearing on the cover of AARP ten years ago. My husband asks for senior tickets at the movies. I stand as far away as possible. I’ve always been open about my age, which is 63, but I see no need to trumpet.

I have no idea if I will take advantage of being a "Senior Citizen", when  I  get there is 20 plus years.

Candice, you are about as far removed from ‘geezerdom’ as I am from ‘drop dead georgous!’ I loved you in Boston Legal and I love this website as a way of keeping in touch, so to speak!

I learned well from my mother and started lying about my age at 23.  Thus far I’ve actually been 25 for about 4 years in a row, this next year I’m thinking of actually turning 26 so it looks more convincing.  I figure, if you start lying in your 20’s when you can really get away with it then the 30’s and 40’s will be easier.  Mom finally turned "50" this year, her 3rd husband still has no idea she was 45 for 5 years.

I turned 50 last year and when I got my AARP membership card, I immediately began asking for discounts.  I found out to my dismay that I am not old enough to receive most of them other than AARP’s insurance, etc.  I’m waiting impatiently to save money.  I’m proud of my years.  God knows I earned them!

I always wondered why women lied about their age; then I started doing it. The only thing is, I lie in reverse. I tell people that I’m 10 years older than I really am. I decided that I would rather have people tell me how good I look for my age. If I took years off my age, they might think, "God, she looks like Hell."

This is a great way of looking at it!!!! I won’t lie about my age- as what was said before, I earned every year, and every wrinkle. Why would I deny what I was and what it took to get to this point of my life?

Candice,

Why did you get shit for being on the cover of AARP?  Who had a problem with it?  I actually remember the cover and loved the story.  I’m always happy to see you on or in anything!

Candice, I am loving my geezerdom…Stopped coloring my hair and in stead got a great haircut for my lovely gray hair. Everybody tells me my gray has grown in perfectly. Unlike most of my friends, I wanted to see what my gray hair looked like and I liked it. Now I so love not getting color in my hair.  I ask for senior price at the movies and have no problem…what I won’t do is go to the movies at 4pm on the weekends. My girlfriend and I are crazed movie buffs and we will try to make a movie a weekend and go to dinner. Once when I was leaving for Europe the next day we decided to go to an earlier movie so that I would get home and to bed early. My gosh, I have never seen so many geezers in one place. It depressed the hell out of both of us. We are both from major cities moved to be near grandchildren. We were also very successful career women and we still dress the part…showing up at your local movie at 4 pm is a scary proposition.  Women our age looking 20-30 years older…having totally given up life as vibrant interesting women.

My and friend and I agreed we would not do that again. I love being older, as long as I can continue looking like me only older…I am fine!

I must say when I open my AARP magazine and it lists the celebrities ages, I am often surprised who is older than I am, when all along, I had assumed I was older.

Oh, heck, my maternal grandmother will be 101 yrs old in Sept. She never liked the term "senior citizen." I’m 57 and hope I be a cool as Candy is at any age. I’m really a wordsmith, not a numbers cruncher.

Candice,

Whatever happened to age is not an issue-it’s a number ?

To Dye or not to Dye… That is my question… As you can see, I let my lovely locks go all silver… My daughter is getting married in September, some of my friends are asking me if I am going to dye my hair? Should I? Is the stunning silver look out?

I never used the Senior Citizen’s discounts until I got laid off at the tender age of 61.  Now I dig for them anywhere I can.
