The 'Strategic Sensibility' Behind Michelle Obama’s Style: A Conversation With Mandi Norwood
She repeats outfits, bares arms, mixes chain-store finds with high-end designs. She’s brought lesser-known American designers to the forefront. The author of Michelle Style talks to wOw about a very fashion conscientious First Lady

Mandi Norwood
Editor’s note: The acclaimed fashion editor and author of Michelle Style: Celebrating the First Lady of Fashion, Mandi Norwood, has become a trusted authority on Michelle Obama’s wardrobe. Norwood spent eight weeks and sleepless nights researching the First Lady’s outfits, poise and shopping habits to create a book that serializes Michelle’s fashion flair since the Democratic primaries in June 2008 — and also serves as a guide with simple tips on how to emulate this modern icon. Norwood, who also co-founded the consulting company Trampoline, recently gabbed with wowOwow on everything she knows (and doesn’t know!) about Michelle’s style.
wowOwow: Michelle Style features pages of full-color original sketches from top designers, including Isabel Toledo, Tory Burch and Tommy Hilfiger. What was the process like to create the book?
MANDI NORWOOD: Well, it was just really about hitting the phones and calling up all the designers that I knew from my magazine. I’m a magazine editor-in-chief, so I know a lot of the designers and put a lot of calls in also to designers that were working closely with Mrs. Obama. And it was simply a case of I need it now; in fact, I need it yesterday. And many of them were just more than happy to collaborate on a book like this. It really is a celebration of her style.
wOw: You spent a considerable amount of time researching Michelle Obama’s style before she entered the White House. Have you noticed any changes since she has become First Lady?
MANDI: Yes. She’s become even more of a risk taker. Before she became First Lady, we talked a lot about those sheath dresses and very sort of simple, tailored shapes; and bold, block colors, and things that were very classic. And she was, obviously, compared many times with Jacqueline Kennedy, and there were obvious similarities. But I definitely think that since she’s become First Lady her confidence has grown and she’s obviously incredibly comfortable in her own skin, and with the whole role of First Lady. And I think she’s having a lot of fun. And that is sort of symbolizing the clothes that she’s choosing. She’s choosing much more avant-garde designers, avant-garde shapes, and really shaking up her closet.
wOw: I can’t agree with you more. When you say "shaking up her closet," do you mean how she mixes a lot of different designers, styles and price points? She’ll mix J. Crew with a Narciso Rodriguez?
MANDI: Right.
wOw: So do you think she’s deliberately throwing in some cheaper accessories? Or do you think this is all just part of her innate style?
MANDI: Even before she became First Lady, when you look at her natural style — one day she would be wearing a Gap sundress and the next minute, she would be wearing Maria Pinto.
wOw: Yes!
MANDI: So it’s something that she likes to do. Obviously, I think she enjoys, on a personal level, dressing across price points and designers as well as chain store. But I think that could well be the very sort of strategic, sensibility behind her style. I think as First Lady she has a responsibility of taking the temperature of the nation and to dress accordingly. She’s an incredibly smart person and I just don’t think for a minute that she is not clued into what people are thinking, what people are saying.

Hi Omie…..are ya talkin’ to me? YES to you Georgia, my comment was about your avatar’s meaning. I tried to copy and paste the avatar but that obviously didn’t work and I should have previewed it. Gotta go get something to eat before I get to bed. Goodnight!
I can’t believe I’m even getting involved in a discussion so irrelevant to anything, but this whole "style" thing related to Michelle Obama seems so contrived. I don’t pay all that much attention to her, but I’ve seen her wear some nice things on occasion — the yellow dress was nice, and exactly like one I had some years ago.
But most of the time she looks dowdy and frumpled to me, starting with that horrid thing she wore on inauguration day — which is actually fine. I don’t see that it matters all that much. But to elevate her to some fashion maven is laughable and merely underscores the gap between what is said about her and what my lyin’ eyes see before me.
It strikes me that there’s a near-desperate need on the part of many to find people to worship. The toned arms thing was the first clue. Who in her forties and even fifties doesn’t have "toned" arms —- and without even working to tone them? Given her looks and her build, was it just assumed that she’d be a fashion downer, thus a great relief to find something positive — though hardly unique —to gush about?
My my Laurie, for someone who could care less, it didn’t take much to get your negative engine revving. Your arrogance is that you have better taste than Ms. Obama. American women by and large are noted for their lack of taste, so it borders on the ridiculous that so many of you dream the impossible dream…that somehow you KNOW FASHION! Honey it just ain’t so.
As for elevation to a fashion maven…isn’t that what you’ve done to yourself? We don’t have a photo of you dressed to the nines, so all of your meowing about Mrs. Obama is merely a laughable self-congratulatory fur ball in the throat of a rather smug alley cat.
I am a great admirer of Michelle Obama and think she dresses well and appropriately. I don’t understand all the hype about it - this country is going down the tubes people! Unemployment is over 10% and all that money given to the taxpayers as incentive didn’t work. I pray that there aren’t going to be any more incentive payments made. Hope the President, Congress and Senate will rethink that very seriously. Some of the banks and savings and loans we the taxpayers bailed out are making enormous profits, probably because they’re not giving any loans to speak of to the people who need and want them. I don’t know of a single story where someone who was losing his or her home didn’t lose it because of intervention from the big businesses we helped "save". Until we stop allowing companies to close their doors in the U.S. and move to third-world countries where labor is cheap, we will be unable to provide work for our own. What about the fact millions of children are going to bed hungry at night and millions of people don’t have a home or apartment to live in?
Forget about what Michelle Obama is wearing and start thinking of the people who can’t afford clothing or food or a place to sleep. Get real!

The discussion is about Michelle Obama! … You are totally off topic! … Your opening line was nothing more than a failed attempt to appear to be on topic so that you could discuss your topic of choice!
The economy and the American people are of prime importance! … However, are we not allowed a moment of pleasure discussing something that has nothing to do with the economy? … Must be consumed 24-7-365 ? … Hey you can discuss the economy (News, Politics etc.) there’re specific sections for those topics.
There is no hype. There are those of us who simply enjoy discussing First Lady Michelle Obama. You get real! Check your mirror for the Green Eyed Monster!
Thank you, Laurie. Were this lovely woman not FLOTUS no one would pay much attention to her wardrobe, first, and anyone with any sense of the aesthetic would note that it is less than flattering to her, second, and quite often inappropriate for a number of reasons, third. Her belt (most unflattering!) fetish reminds me of Hilary’s headband.
None of this really matters, of course, but since she has been elevated to iconic status simply because of who she is (why else? the "empress has no clothes"!) I can’t help noticing.
She is a very lovely woman and her choices do not do her justice (for the most part). She has a difficult figure and her choices frequently make the worst of it. Any time a woman’s clothing makes more of a statement than her face, her carriage, her personality - when the clothes wear the woman instead of vice versa - fasion sense has been violated.
That said, first ladies often morph into something much better with time and experience. Hilary is an outstanding example of this and how lovely she is now that she has found what truly becomes her. I have no doubt Michelle will have a similar experience.
Garden Goddess
First Lady Michelle Obama looks absolutely fabulous in everything she wears! … She marches to her own drummer! … She’s not a slave to the "Designer Elite’s who’ve dictated what women are to wear for generations! … She’s not a robotic follower. She has developed her own style and it’s working! … First Lady Michelle Obama wears her clothing, they do not wear her. She has a lovely figure and face. She makes excellent fashion choices!… First Lady Michelle Obama is a wonderful role model and an Icon.
She is not the typical size "0" skeleton flooding the pages of the so-called fashion magazines! … She is not afraid of her beautiful woman’s body!
Hillary Clinton looks like "The Pillsbury Dough Boy In Drag!"
Who died and made you the Fashion Goddess? … I can’t hear you! … Right! … No one! … Morph this … … …!
Garden Goddess
These days a Goddess has to wear so many hats! … I have no doubt they’re all Outdated made for the Dowdy Set! …Etiquette and Polite Discourse I doubt that highly!
We are entitled to our opinions and as a mature, articulate, intelligent and educated person I will always respectfully agree to disagree when coming to a crossroads. I have every right to my opinions. My comments are rude and off the mark because I do not agree with them. Sorry to offend your sensibilities.
The possibly a dollop of insecurity and your language reveals much more about you than you’d want anyone to know is strictly amateur night and not even Psych 101! The most notable is ignorance. Come on Goddess! When all else fails throw that in!
I’m not offended by your response just amused by your futile attempts to appear knowledgeable and sophisticated.
