Have you switched to drugstore cosmetics because of these economic times?
The New York Times Style section recently advised women on the fine art of lower-cost-cosmetic shopping, as makeup sales at drugstores are up. Have you made the switch?

Which is why I buy the Loreal.
I buy some stuff from Lauren Hutton’a "Good Stuff" make-up for older women & love, Love, LOVE the stuff. Her face disc with concealers, blush, contour, etc. is divine, & it comes with a video so you can learn how to use the diffferent items by watching Lauren applying it on herself.
Most of my eye make-up & lipstick comes from Target or sales at Walgreens. My eyelashes have always been short & sparse, so I am a sucker for every offer by cosmetic companies to make my eyelashes look thicker or longer. Buying mascara at discount department stores or drugstore sales is the only way I can keep trying falling for every offer of better lashes.
Donna, I stay away from anything that’s for "older" anyone. I once heard a 99 year old say, "never give up young people - stay away from "old folks," and I never forgot it. ;-) I may look weird, but age has its privileges (hee hee).
I mix it up. I have some "high end" products I love, but the rest are all drugstore. Eyeshadow—drugstore. The NYC brand in the matte black cases—they have great colors, they last a long time too.
Mascara— Benefit’s BAD Gal mascara in mini-size for $9. My eyelashes are fine and Bad Gal fattens them up and makes them stand out like no other brand I’ve tried. Besides, who doesn’t want to be a "bad gal" every once in awhile, eh?
Lipstick—drugstore. Although, my one go to for YEARS is Clinique’s almost lipstick Black Honey. It looks good on everyone, no joke. Sheer perfect color no matter what you wear. I have a lot of cheap lip gloss, etc., but always have a tube of Black Honey, too.
Blush—I have 2 of "all in one" kind of blush "sticks" from Aveda. The color is so nice and sheer that it really looks natural. I can also put it on my lips and eyes in a pinch.
Foundation—I wear Origins, it works best for me, I’m not switching. My skin is very difficult to not only to match in color, but it’s combination and moody, too. This seems to work no matter what my skin "mood" is for the day.
But, I buy makeup only occasionally, so the "splurge" for mascara or a good foundation doesn’t hurt when it only happens a couple times a year. I deserve it anyway, so no guilt there!
I agree, Diana - love Cetaphil and used the cleanser sans any soap for years - still do. Their great tub of moisure creme is wondrous, too. It’s difficult to find "creams" (vs. lotion, etc) so this is a real plus. I don’t buy new things, often, but keep my "implements" very clean, weekly, and focus now more on skin health than "looks," but I’m tempted to try Bare Minerals.
Dove for Sensitive Skin and Nerutogena Triple Moisure shampoo has been my 2009 joy. What a difference!
How are you? ;-))
CJ, Soap hasn’t touched my complexion for years. Cetaphiil is perfect for it.
I enjoy Bare MInerals because a little goes a long way, it doesn’t feel like you are wearing any makeup at all, doesn’t stain the collars so bad and has a sunscreen in it.
Not heard of Vanicreme … Agree with Cetaphil cleanser - I’ve not used the "soap" though my derm. recommends both. I can’t have any sunscreen - so I cover up, take my Vit D, calcium and eat a lot of fiber. ;-)) The Bare Minerals sounds super.
I’m not one for spending time putting on makeup unless I have to. I did try the Bare Minerals but I found that it was very drying. [My skin is dry.] Also, I’m very fair and the Bare Minerals made me look ghost-like. But it sure looks great on other people and I envy them the easy time they have in applying it.
Cetaphil is great. Don’t know what I’d do without it.
