Have you switched to drugstore cosmetics because of these economic times?

The New York Times Style section recently advised women on the fine art of lower-cost-cosmetic shopping, as makeup sales at drugstores are up. Have you made the switch?

Andrea, it was during "very aggressive chemos" for breastcancer that my endo discovered the original post-op error (well, I did - I had a total thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy 3 years prior w/o a radioative uptake post-op!!!!). Hence, the TSH was going through the ceiling, and now he keeps tabs on it, and I keep flying back to him 369 miles away b/c he’s the only one who’s ethical, scientific, and honest.

To those following the thyroid thread: it is VERY important to take your thyroid replacement dose (Synththroid, Levoxyl) on an EMPTY stomach ONE HOUR before other foods are introduced or OTHER MEDICATIONS (even vitamin supplements). No coffee, tea, nada.

C jay: where are you located? You state there is no help available. Just curious. Sweetie, there is more than one MD who is ethical, scientific and honest. Test results don’t lie.

AJ…thanks for the info….I too read I couldn’t take food for 4 hours after taking my Synthroid, and not to take any other meds with this, including calcium tablets….very strange…..this messes me up completely in the morning…no coffee now…I hadn’t heard that one!  Sounds like I would be better off taking this med at bedtime, that would seem to be the less interference with my daily routine.

After reading all this the issue of cosmetics should be dumped in the dumpster. And for some of us who don’t have to deal with all this, hats off to all of you that do!!! Screw eye shadow––boy, oh, boy, does that put things in perspective!

Phyllis….I know we went off topic, and some of our posts were removed before we even got to see what our responses were to each other…I wish I knew two of those responses, because I know they would be quite helpful to me…..I just think something as important as this, Wow needs a health off topic site so women can get information from one another….I hope others were not offended by us and just scrolled on by if they weren’t interested….there was just no other place to post this subject!

Now, staying on topic…I do try to buy my lipstick on sale!  :-)

I can’t imagine anyone being offended. What’s her name that has the heart thread would be a good place to continue your discussion, but isn’t that what we do when we get together? We DO go off topic and then find our way back again. Some of the most interesting threads in the past were people going into something not related specifically to topic. Anyway, as I said before, reading of your problems just made war paint so insignificant. I wish you well.

Phyllis…thank you…yes, I agree….going off topic is very easy to do….we are women!!! lol…..I hope someday we have just a health topic where anything can be discussed….the pain topic was a great one too!  I learn so much from women here, in fact, after one of the posts, I’m not getting my morning coffee anymore…..this is my first attempt at it, and I’m not a happy camper…..but maybe my lipstick will stay on better….who knows!!!  Love that lipstick!!!  (on sale of course)

I’ve had a frightening number of of years of experimentation at all price points and have settled on cheap lipstick and eye shadow and department store or Sephora for everything else.  I haven’t changed my ways because of the economy…but I have cut back on professional mani-pedis.

I have been hooked on Bare Minerals from Sephora for years.  I do use some eye shadow and lipstick from drug stores.  But Bare Minerals are wonderful and Sephora usually has the best price!  QVC also carries some great names but Sephora is all make up and the best selection.

Hey, you sisters, which one do you start with (Bare Minerals)? I’m on their website, and bought a gift for a daughter - some amazing bargains! Guide me. ;-))

The Bare Minerals foundation makeup SPF15 is a great place to start…it comes in the starter kit in two shades so you can’t go wrong cause you can blend them to get the effect you like.

If you’re not sure…try a search of local stores like Ulta or Sally Beauty Supply which may have testers or a department store where you can get a complementary makeup application.

I would rather die than go without my Bare Minerals Well Rested.  I have black circles under my eyes and Well Rested is the ONLY thing I’ve found that helps.

Definitely Sephora.  They have a great return policy.  The few products I need last so long I return there maybe twice a year, tops.  (Pun intended.)

I tried some drugstore mascara and like Andrea M ended up with itchy, raccoon eyes that dripped during a rainstorm. I’ve tried Revlon eyeshadows and I have to apply so much for depth of color (this is for evening only).

I switched from Chanel foundation to one that was half the price and sold where I get an occasional facial. She spent time helping me match up the right color for my skin which is a feature you don’t find in a drugstore.

I switched back to Chanel lipsticks as they last all day on me and I love their selections of color! I live in Coco Pink and other similar shades, but then again I live in West Palm Beach, Florida and they match my pink-and-green Lilly wardrobe perfectly!
