One Dozen Home Remedies, by Joan Juliet Buck
From fat to fatigue, here are the remedies for what ails you.
In response to: Cucumbers on your eyes, oatmeal in your bath … What old-fashioned beauty rituals do you still follow?
I only use old-fashioned remedies.
Witch hazel as a skin tonic.
Cucumber slices on the eyes. The astringent effect tightens the skin.
A few drops of essential oil of lavender in the evening bathwater to get very, very sleepy.
A few drops of Rosemary essence in the morning bath has the same effect as five cans of Red Bull.
(Or something called Early to Rise, which is less radical.)
Vicks Vapo Rub on the chest and feet when I have a cold. Or Tiger Balm, even better.
A good stiff skin brush all over the body just before or during a bath. (Hurts more before, when the bursh is dry.)
Egg yolks as a mask on the hair. Disgusting but potent.
A very, very cold rinse after each shampoo. Best done in a salon, because I mean cold. Good for the hair shaft.
Tea: Camomile to sleep, mint for an upset stomach, maté to wake up, Earl Grey or Lapsang Souchoung to keep going all day without coffee nerves, green tea for extra stamina.
When in doubt, steamed zucchini for dinner.
When fat, Bieler Broth for a few days.
At all times, 85% chocolate, food of the Aztec Gods.

Joan,
Almost everything you have listed here I use also! You forgot the egg white face mask for tightening pores and 1/2 cup Real Mayonaise (cholesterol treatment) combed into your dry hair then under a dryer for 10 minutes for deep, deep conditioning after that wash with gentle shampoo and condition with your own conditioner better than an expensive hot oil treatment. :o)
I just started using baking soda (1 tablespoon) as shampoo and cider vinegar as rinse and conditioner. Start teaspoon by teaspoon with baking soda (add a little water to make paste) starting at crown of head and massaging through whole head. Then rinse with the what’s a perfect ph for the hair apple cider vinegar- only on the ends of hair though. If hair is a bit stiff after pour small amount on comb and then comb through hair. It sounds bizarre, but it is great for your hair and friends will notice how thick and shiny your hair is!
I swear by that real mayonnaise hair conditioning treatment.
Also, vinegar for sunburns. Hopefully you will have used sunscreen before sunning, but just in case there’s a spot you missed with the sunscreen, the vinegar will take the burn out.
Hi Andrea,
Amazing how the Mayo treatment works huh? First time I tried it, I thought "Ugghh I am going to smell like a bowl of macaroni salad!" But the smell doesn’t hang around after a wash. Your hair is so soft and feels stronger after. I’ll have to try the vinegar sunburn remedy on hubby after a day of fishing. Thanks!
Heidi,
Let me warn you [and you should warn him] that the vinegar on sunburn will sting like the devil but it’s only momentary.
I’ve found that if I take a couple Tylenol before a hefty day in the sun sailing it helps, too. I haven’t figured it out yet, though.
But neither of these are substitutes for sunblock.
Andrea,
He does apply sunscreen 50 spf but does not re-apply after hours in the sun, maybe if the vinegar stings he will remember, lol A friend from Ireland sent him some spray stuff by Boots called "Soltan after sun spray cooler" It is awesome stuff for painful sunburns but we cannot find it anywhere in the US. He will be happy to know about the vinegar. :o)
You know, many people make that same mistake about not reapplying. The vinegar solution is just for those "missed a spot" islands of skin. It won’t protect from skin cancer. He needs to have it repeated over and over again that he must reapply as per the directions.
Very important: check the expiration date on the container. I had a disastrous experience which taught me to always look for the expiration date. And if the date is something like 08/09, do NOT assume it means August of 2009. Call the manufacturer to clarify.
Remember, burn cooler does not prevent cancer.
On a sad note, two months ago a friend of ours, age 42 died of melanoma. He was a surfing addict.
Hi Andrea,
Does vinegar really work for sunburns?….. I would think it would hurt like hell, but if it does thank you so much for sharing. I have got to try it out. ….=0)
Hi, Ali Bell,
It does……but only because you’ll scream like a banshee when you put it on a burn, which seems to take the sting right our of the burn [or makes the actual burn seem less painful]. All I can say is that when I was a kid we didn’t have sunscreen and I was constantly getting burned. This was my mother’s secret weapon.
BUT REMEMBER - IT DOES NOT PREVENT HARMFUL DAMAGE FROM SUN’S RAYS.

Hello everyone, Can I PLEAD for some advice??????? I have an disorder called IBS, it is so bad that it forced me out of the work force. I’ve tried every drug out there and nothing works. It goes so bad that I can spend (longest tim 4 straight hours) on the pot. Cramps are worse then giving birth. I eat alot of fiber to keep it from getting to bad but that doesn’t seem to work.
I’m so sick of being sick. This is a health question, just about the inside and not the outside. Thanks
Deniseann
Enzymedica is a brand that makes protealytic enzymes - I call them digestive enzymes. Anyway, I am sure they have a site that you might get some help from. Check out the formula they have called Repair, that might help. Do you take acidophilus? How about papaya or pineapple enzymes - they have an anti-inflammatory effect on digestion.
Irritable Bowl Syndrome is something many have but no one likes to talk about it.
Number ONE see a doctor who is a gastroenterologist. Many people have IBS of one sort or another. Constipation, dirrahea, cramping, gas problems. There are prescription meds to help, I have some suggestions.
Number TWO don’t stay on the toilet for more than 15 minutes, you need to retrain your body to expect to defecate or urinate when on the toilet and not wait 4 hours. You will get stuck to it if nothing else … can see it now. EMS comes to pry you off the pot. Okay a little humour :o) . . but it isn’t funny. Tension, anxiety are reasons this can happen … our gut is so sensitive that our brain controls the bowl. So you may need to see a therapist also to get at the reason and try to learn to relax. It is difficult.
I had to cancel a free plane trip once because I had such smelly gas so often I couldn’t go anywhere.
To get fiber and soften the stool I take 2 T Benefiber, 1 T Citrucel in 6 oz of tap water and I add 1 heaping measurement of MiraLax. I have built up to this dose as the Benefiber can cause gas so start with the Citrucel and the MiraLax. The Citrucel will thicken a bit so needs to be stirred and add the MiraLax and gulp it down. Drink more liquid. These are not laxatives that will give you the "dreaded laxative habit" we hear about. I also found that taking Flaxseed capsules help smooth out the digestive track and don’t repeat on me. I use tap water as the Citrucel does stir in easier but an ice cube can be added. I get the sugar free orange but you get whatever you might. Try a small container. The Benefiber can be put into anything and just start by using 1 or 1 teaspoons and it will be clear in the water or liquid. Eating oatmeal is great for good stool movement, tastes good too.
I take the fiber twice a day and the MiraLax once a day and I make certain I have a soft stool movement every day. The doctor on Oprah says we are to check our stool and it should form a soft stool looking like a banana. If not I add a glisteren suppository to get the colon moving again.
I began with gas and diarrhea when I was in my twenties. Later it became constipation. Hemorroids can develop from both conditions and I have had to have mine banded and some lanced. I wish you well - there is an answer for you somewhere. Relax! Easier said than done. Bless you, Be Well, Omie
