I’m trying to go all "Dyan Cannon" on my hair for my fifties. which is 4 years away lol. I figure by my 50th birthday i can have my hair to that concave part of my back. but we’ll see if i can make it. it’s about to my bra strap now and has been a drag getting it here.
I’ve colored my hair with henna for 3 years after giving up commercial dye (it was frying my hair). My hair feels so silky after a henna treatment. The color comes out a great auburn with coppery highlights, and since I mix in some ground cloves it smells good too. My hair is to my bra strap. I can French braid it and I love the magic double combs which makes it so easy to put up whenever I want it out of the way. I have a few nice hair sticks and I have fun with my hair.
It covers my grey just fine. I use apple cider vinegar as the liquid in my mix. I henna at home about once every 4-6 weeks. Lot’s of great henna information on:
It’s sitting in a chair for 4 hours or more with foils in my hair, under a heat lamp, trying to take an interest in magazines without the benefit of my glasses, and politely enduring a scalp massage even though for me it just adds to the time the entire experience requires. The feeling of well-being that comes from having good hair on my way out the door helps make it worth the ordeal and the high price, sort of.
So funny, I answered that I LOVE getting my hair done and I actually "forgot" that I am wearing a wig. : D I can be such a screwball but the question was do I love it? and the answer is:" YES! Big treat, I love to have my hair washed, it is such a comforting feeling, I could fall asleep during it. I have medical issues and I do have hair but it’s doing it’s own unruly thing right now due to shock/chemicals. So at the moment I am really LOVING that wig! I get a ton of compliments on it because it suits me. And just as a ps I have to laugh about some of those hairdressers because yes they can be a pain blabbing on and on which I do not mind at all but if it is about their husband’s ex-wife and they are complaining non-stop? Well then I am thinking: Excuse me, I came all the way here to pay all this money to hear YOU whine!? What kind of "service" is that?!! I finally found someone who is just real laid back and I love her but the place is expensive. Oh well, like Lena says give thanks for everything and always hope for the best. I hope you get your twa, Lena. Hold onto that thought and don’t give it up.
Getting my hair done is a chore as you all can see…I call the salon when I need a cut or a color and sure enough…there are no appointments for three weeks or more….have you all seen me in THREE weeks or more? No, I think not! Horrifying to be sure! So, I have to submit to an alley cut…in the dark with dull scissors….not pretty!
I’ve been cutting my own hair for approximately three years. I wear it cut short nearly to the scalp. It’s salt & pepper with bursts of white at the front.
The Process
I take out my kit which has lots of fascinating gadgets. I cut my hair. I get under the shower, shampoo, condition and towel dry. Once this is completed I massage Softee Indian Hemp Hair and Scalp Treatment into my scalp. It smells wonderful!
I’ve worn my hair all lengths and styles. Once I turned 50 I cut my long hair, it nearly reached my buttocks. It symbolized a rebirth, a cleansing, a moving to another level of my life. It felt very spiritual. At 58 yrs of age I feel more sexy and beautiful than I’ve ever felt. Actually the older I become the more I experience these feelings. I love touching my scalp. I love how it makes me feel. I get lots of compliments. Funny, people always tell me what a great shape of head I have. My brother gave me my hair shears approx. 3 years ago and I’ve been cutting my own hair ever since. Besides, I save tons of money.
Women have to stop allowing men to dictate what they wear, how they should wear their hair etc. Remember, the beauty business is a trillion dollar industry. The more so-called trends they can push the more money flows from women’s pocketbooks into their pockets!
I find getting my nails done is a chore, but I enjoy going to the hairdresser’s. I have the shampoo in a massage chair, then my hairdresser, who is the only man who has ever understood my hair, makes me look beautiful. I’ve been going to him for almost twenty years, and we’ve been through a lot together — marriages, divorces, his drug problems — now we’re both in very happy marriages and he’s clean.
I started highlighting my hair about twenty-five years ago, and as the grey has increased, so has the blonde. I’m almost totally blonde now, which makes me feel great.
As my very vain mother told me — if I don’t take care of myself, who will?
My hair has always been long , but in my senior year or high school… I quit letting my mom give me bangs. My hair is still rather long , at least to my bra strap in the back , and all I do it wash it with shampoo and conditioner , brush it and let it dry as it will. If I want it more curly , I buy a shampoo that is for that , although its normally rather straight. I work in food service , so I have to wear it in a ponytail or bun most of the time.
As to getting it cut or styled. I normally only go to the salon every three monthes or so. My hair grows quickly , but I dont make too much above minimum wage , so thats a budget issue. I can honestly say I have never dyed my hair or had ANY desire to do so. A lot of girls my age dye their hair and the upkeep seemed to be a chore. Add to that the amount of upkeep for things like perms , extensions , etc … it makes me glad that I have long hair that looks good without all the crazy work. I think that for some people , they over complicate the process.
I love getting my hair done, but I always have been blessed with good Spas & Salons so I make a day out of it.
In NYC I provided my expertise with computers to a wonderful Spa in the West Village and they paid me with free services. I would make a day out of it. Hair, massage, mani-pedi, whatever but getting my hair done was always a lovely escape for me.
Now, here in San Francisco my very dear friend, who was over last night for my dinner party, is a Sr. Stylist and my stylist. So again, it’s a fun and relaxing experience for me and I get such wonderful service and advice and conversation.
Yeah, I do love getting my hair done. It’s definitely a treat for me.
When I decided to go "natural" and cut off all the relaxed hair, my daughter who was 4 at the time took one look at me and burst into tears. I asked her what was wrong and she said "Mommys are supposed to have long hair!" It was so funny but I had to keep a strait face because her little heart really was broken.
I went ‘natural’ ten years ago. I love it. I wash, condition, then part it down the middle, braid the two sections, then roll the ends. When I come it out, it has a ‘natural’ wavy look, that I’m content with.

B Clark,
In my twenties I used Henna on my hair. I used to mix the compound with a cup of coffee instead of water. It added a little different touch………..
It covers my grey just fine. I use apple cider vinegar as the liquid in my mix. I henna at home about once every 4-6 weeks. Lot’s of great henna information on:

During my working days…….I had one big rule for my hairdressers.
Let your client talk……….keep your personal business to yourself.
Part of the experience women enjoy is having someone to listen to them when their having their hair done.
If asked questions (which most women seem to do) answer but don’t share all the negative stuff about your life.
My people found they made much larger tips when they behaved in a very professional manner.

WOMEN HAVE TO STOP BEING THE PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL EXPERIMENTS FOR MEN’S EGOCENTRISM!
