My personal recipie for falling asleep naturally at night is taken from the book by Susan S. Weed Menopausal Years The Wise Woman Way(Ash Tree Publishing co. 1992).

Chapter Two, ppgs. 89-93 are full of herbal allies and information concerning naturally treating sleep disturbances. My favorite recipie is for a cup of infused Oatstraw tea. To quote Ms. Weed(pg. 90):

Step 3: "Let oatstraw nourish your nervous system, smoothe your energy and give you more restful sleep."

She also suggests  a cup of hops tea which also helps deal with night sweats. Oatstraw for me is very relaxing, I don’t feel "drugged" and I wake up far more refreshed and I am able to feel as if I got a good night’s sleep. Oatstraw can be found at any health food, natural food market in bulk or in already prepared tea bag form. I hope this helps.

Gee, you guys are lucky.  I never fall asleep befor 4a.m.  Sometimes I take an herbal supplement around 9 or 10pm and may get to sleep at 2am. However, I don"t  get up to go to work.

I’ve had sleep problems since the Change started to come on. But I swore no meds, and stuck by it, and continue to do so all these years later. I figure it’s just extra time the Universe has given to me, so I try to make it productive — read, crochet, or just plain get up and do some work!

I suffer through bouts of insomnia. Working two part time retail jobs makes a steady bedtime impossible. However I have a few tricks which help. I will stop caffine at a certain time of the day, usually about 2 pm, drinking either light teas like white or Twinnings Prince of Wales. Tea affects me differently than coffee. Then If I can’t get to sleep and it’s a matter of not being able to shut down my mind I can either drink camomile tea with honey, or in extreme moments I will take meletonin tablets. Spelling aside the meletonin is an OTC supplement which helps me sleep. I tried valerian which is an old classic and prescriptions in the past. I also avoid eating apples late. They have been found to help keep you awake, similar to coffee.

If I have a lot on my mind and have a hard time sleeping which is not too often. I go to this website that has the sound of breathing. There is no sign up, you just go there and it starts. It is like sleeping with someone, and very comforting. I try to keep up with the breathing, and before I know it, i’m asleep. When i wake up he is still breathing. The website is www.doasone.com

If I didn’t do something about my insomnia, I’d go about a week or two without sleeping and then crash for 2 days - and yes, it has happened several times before. I was always afraid of using any type of herb or medication to help me sleep, but I finally realized I was not doing my health any good. Now, I’ll allow myself to go one or two nights on little or no sleep, but on that third night I brew a cup of tea with valerian and chamomile and lavander, or I take 2mg melatonin. I try to mix them up so I don’t get into the habit of taking either of them. I also try to set a time limit on when to use them - if I haven’t fallen asleep by 1am, I take something.
