Joan Juliet Buck Is Having One Busy Summer

Joan Juliet Buck

It’s black currant season, and they are once more legal in the USA, which means that they can be bought at various semi-secret locations around New York City. If anyone finds them, please let me know.

I have been busy for Vogue — here’s my interview with Christy Turlington, and here is what I thought of Pilobolus’s new dance piece Dog•id, and then there’s the new HBO series called … ahh … "Hung" … about what a man will do to get by.

Dear Ms. Buck,

Here is information about a CSA which delivers fruits and vegetables to the 92nd Street Y. We have received currants in recent weeks and they have been delish. Here is a link http://www.92y.org/content/community_supported_agriculture.asp. It is surprising none can be found at the 14th Street/Union Square Market (I am sure you looked there). I hope this email provides a lead for you. Perhaps Stoneledge Farms (see above link) also provides fruit to some of the markets in Manhattan.

Best,
Kate

Joan Juliet Buck, I read your Turlington piece in ‘Vogue’; I didn’t know that I didn’t know so much about this beautiful model/scholar/mother and wife of the gorgeous Ed Burns….two enchanting parents.  The pressure on the spawn.  Also took note of the full length photo of you in the ‘table of contents’.  Your snapshot on wOw presents a much different persona than does ‘Vogue’;  seems you are not merely a head in a box, but rather a ‘totally’ attractive woman.  Brava.

I know not of currants, only currents and current events.  I do wonder though if you are familiar with the google maps which allow one to identify favorite restaurants, shops, parks, currant stands, etc?  They are accessed through Google..the ‘famous’ person lists her favorites with a note about the site and then the locations are identified on an actual map.  Fascinating..to me, anyway.  Probably, I am the last one to find out about this, but what a great idea for you women on wOw to share you favs with us.  Please do.

Peace and grace

Beth: Your saying you knew not of currents, but only of current events reminded me of this which is part of a story I wrote about an Irish lad:

The only current events discussed in our home were whether Mum was sober enough to have gotten dinner together and whether Da was sober enough to eat. Even on holidays the currents in the fruitcake which had been soaked in rum for weeks was the big event. And no one ever debated that––they just ate it.

Have always liked Ed Burns, too.

didn’t know about that Google site–good idea.

phyllis, your writing combines the lyrical and the lovely.  Thank you for sharing this with me. I never miss one of your posts as I always gain clear-sighted perspective or a smile…often times both.

Peace and grace

Hello Joan -just saw you in "Julie and Julia" this weekend.  My, what a witch you were, Mme!  Great job - short, but memorable.
