Judith Martin Will Take the Sea – But Not the Sand

Judith Martin
I have never understood beaches. Mind you, I’m crazy about water – rivers, lakes, oceans, canals, bathtubs, even puddles if they’re outdoors and have nice reflections in them. But is it really a sensible idea to cover your body with oil and then lie down in sand?

I’m the same way-I love the water, but hate the way sand feels. Unfortunately, my sand abhorrence is so intense I never go to the beach and have to content myself with the pool.

Ugghh….sand!  Like Judith and Sandy, love the water…was raised within sight of the North Sea and always needed to have rivers, seas and oceans within easy reach, at the very least but sand…cannot thole how it gets into every nook and cranny…and crook and nanny.  No matter how one brushes oneself down, off, rinses…there are always a couple of grains to irritate.  And sandwiches, hot dogs, burgers…sand; books…sand.  Give me a rocky beach any day…so…how come I live at (yet never visit) one of the primary beach resorts (and have done so the last twelve years)?  Must’ve been a midlife crisis of sorts….

Raised in Southern California, going to the beach on the weekend with my parents, a teenager and falling head over heels for the lifeguard, prancing in my bikini thru the waves, and bringing my son to the beach as a small toddler, watch him playing by the waters edge, all sandy.  Coming home from the beach, long warm showers watching the sand wash down the drain, getting the sand out of my hair.  Taking my grandchildren to the same beach as I went to as a youngster.  Sitting under an unbrella with spf 100 but still digging my toes in the sand.   No matter how old, the beach wouldn’t be the beach without the sand
