Liz Smith Remembers a 'Simply Gorgeous' Elizabeth Taylor

Liz Smith
I think it was Elizabeth Taylor back at the launch of her perfume ads and when she married Larry Fortensky. She was approaching 60 but she was simply gorgeous.

I used to do in-store promos for Elizabeth Taylor’s Passion years ago.  I have only 1 picture from those days.  I’ve always had her Passion For Men although I don’t really like it.  She was by every measure  the greatest beauty in the history of the known universe.  I met her in 1985 or so,  at the 1st APLA "Committment to Life Award" at the BonAventure Hotel downtown about the time of Rock Hudson’s passing.    Her eyes are mesmerizing…at least they were then.  I knew well Bill Meinsenheimer of APLA who in those days was a friend of Elizabeth.  All the things people say about the magnitude of her beauty, even still in those days, may be a little worn out and trite,  but I think they are still ture, nonetheless.

Dame Elizabeth Taylor has had several ultra beautiful times in her life. All throughout the 1950’s/1960’s/ most of the 1970’s. Ruffly from 1985-1989 and again 1991-1994. The rest of the time she was just plain beautiful. Even at her most difficult of times, her beauty reigned supreme. So without going into endless paragraphs regarding the magnitude of her stunning good looks, I shall just show you.

I know the stipulation is "laid eyes on in person," but I have to go back to comments on Elizabeth Taylor.  Once…was it Life magazine?  Some magazine did a story on her life, going up to her fortieth year, I think at that point.  There was a picture taken of her at about age….two?  I remember thinking, "From birth." Always beautiful.  Still is.  Inside and out.

I am almost certain she was turning 40, and I think she was making a movie in Hungary or Poland..some Eastern European country and Burton gave her a big birthday party.  I definitely remember a red dress.  That was the first time I had seen photographs of her as a very small, pre-movie, child and it was mind boggling how pretty she was..even then.

She was turning 40.  I’m sure the magazine was Life.  And I think you are right about the rest, too.  The picture was gorgeous.  And, yes, pictures of her even as a very small child are mind boggling.  She was not "cute".  She was beautiful.  I’ve often wondered about the combination of genes that produced those looks.

Well, Deena.  I’m known for my detailed memory.  Thank God you are reinforcing I haven’t lost it yet. ;)

Late 80’s in Miami, FL  Elizabeth Taylor was to appear at one of the department store to promote her perfumes.  The televisions cameras were all station behind to tape.  When she finally arrival all was forgiven because not only was she drop dead gorgous, but very sweet and polite.  Her creamy ivory skin and dark features and those eyes will never be forgotten.  I know she’s not well and doesn’t look the same but who does?  There will only be one Elizabeth Taylor.
