Question of the Day | 07/09/2009 11:00 pm

Who, in your opinion, is the most physically beautiful woman you've ever laid eyes on in person?

Candice Bergen, Liz Smith and Joan Ganz Cooney name the women who simply take their breath away. Who has left you stunned by beauty?

Candice Bergen's Most Spectacular Beauties List

I remember Anne Bancroft was one of the most spectacular beauties. Gray hair. No face work. Drop-dead gorgeous. Nigella Lawson, whom I just had dinner with, is a knockout. My old friend Ali MacGraw is one of the all-time great-looking women. Diane Sawyer is – even after years of getting up at 3:30 AM and getting no sleep – simply stunning. Go figure. And women today are beautiful into their 70s. Jane Fonda looks INSANELY great. Gloria Steinem. I don’t even count the young ones. But truly, chicks rule.

Liz Smith Remembers a 'Simply Gorgeous' Elizabeth Taylor

I think it was Elizabeth Taylor back at the launch of her perfume ads and when she married Larry Fortensky. She was approaching 60 but she was simply gorgeous.

Joan Ganz Cooney Was Struck by Catherine Zeta-Jones's Beauty

When Al Gore was running for president, Tina Brown and Harry Evans gave a party for him. When I walked into their living room, the first person I saw was Catherine Zeta-Jones. For a moment I couldn’t move. She was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. Needless to say, it was hard to focus on Al Gore after seeing such a sight.

This is way, way before anybody here’s time, and bet nobody has even heard of her. It was during WW2 and Lizbeth Scott was so very beautiful. In contemporary times I think Merle Streep has  a unique beauty of her own.

Hey, I remember Lizbeth Scott. Very sultry. Remember TV? It brought you all kinds of people through old movies. Speaking of that, another stunner from long ago was Hedy LaMarr. Also Gene Tierney. However, movie actresses were mostly chosen for looks in that era, so there are many.

My mom saw Gene Tierney in person here in Houston at some function, perhaps the Alley Theatre where my mom frequents. Even in late age, my mom said she was absolutely beautiful.

In person … I’ll start with someone we are all familiar with:

Catherine Deneuve. It was 1986. It was the launch of her perfume, Deneuve. It was a chypre scent - earthy, green, sensual. Really nice. Anyway, I just happened to be at Nordstrom in South Coast Plaza. All of a sudden there was a "buzz" in the air. I turned, and there was Catherine Deneuve, walking down the aisle (in my direction), male escorts on either side. She was dressed in a black ensemble, wearing pumps with a stacked heel, and carrying a very smart looking handbag. She was beautifully "done" - hair, makeup, the works. She looked so elegant. I was just stunned.

Now on a personal note - it would be my mother. Especially when she is painting. I love to watch her as she mixes her lush palette of oils, then as she works on the canvas. She is so passionate in her painting; I find her especially beautiful at those moments. She gets so involved in her painting that she forgets to eat until hours later. (She is Spanish and Apache. She has the personality of Sally Field, Shirley Maclaine, Ann Bancroft, and the dark flashing eyes of Natalie Wood.) I’ll call her and ask her, "Mom, have you eaten?" And she says, "No, I’ve been painting for hours. I’ll take a break and eat now." And I know she’s very happy.

N P: What a lovely tribute to your mother–-you painted her so well. Just when I was thinking this topic was going to be a continuous listing of celebrities, you come up with this. How fortunate to have a mother who is so in love. What kinds of paintings does she do?

Phyllis,

How kind of you to ask. Mom has done it all. Abstract, impressionism, expressionism, collage, en plein air, portrait work, figurative work. Large canvas and small. I think her abstracts and collage are where she shines. Lately she has been working on portraits and most recently, she has moved more toward the Figurative - in the Impressionistic style. Perhaps I can post a link of some of her work, and maybe even a photo of her, over the weekend. I’ll hit your "reply" button so you’ll know. Best,

Oh, I would love to see some of her work. I don’t do the reply thingy. I’ll contact the Wowers and ask them to email you my email. Thanks so much!

When I was a kid I knew Carol Lynley. Breathtaking. Then, from photos and other images, Monica Bellucci, Ruslana Korshunova (the young model who killed herself last year), Aishwarya Rai Bachshan, Naomi Campbell, Carmen del’ Orefice, and of course many of the others mentioned above, such as the timeless Ava Gardner, the exquisite Elizabeth Taylor, and Candice Bergen. I almost forgot but was bowled over by Isabel Adjani…wow! too many to count, thank goodness.

F Fox, I’m glad you mentioned Aishwarya Rai. In an early scene of "Devdas," the first time she turned around and I saw her face—it really did take my breath away. Shockingly beautiful.

My other top favorite beauties are Isabella Rossellini and her mother, Ingrid Bergman. But there are too many women I think are gorgeous to name, really.

Here are my beauty choices. Some of the women I know personally. Others I’ve experienced through their work, literature and television interviews.  Some are deceased. My mother is my first choice. She died at 86 yrs of age but could still turn heads. Her smile was dazzling! Dr. Leah Gaskin Fitchue, First Woman President of Payne Theological Seminary, in Wilberforce OH. First Lady Michele Obama, Actresses Cicely Tyson, Anne Bancroft, Jane Fonda, Helen Mirren and Dorothy Dandridge, Jazz and Blues Singers Billie Holiday, Betty Carter and Bessie Smith.

Halle Berry.  She is stunning and so natural looking. Makeup is not necessary.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.  I personally think Elizabeth Taylor, in her prime, was the most beautiful woman ever.  Part of it is her fairly uncommon coloring, the dark hair contrasting with the fair skin and, yes, those violet eyes.  Mind you, there are many very close seconds.  I’ve never seen her person, though, so I’m probably not sticking with the program.
