Question of the Day | 07/09/2009 11:00 pm

Who, in your opinion, is the most physically beautiful woman you've ever laid eyes on in person?

Candice Bergen, Liz Smith and Joan Ganz Cooney name the women who simply take their breath away. Who has left you stunned by beauty?

Candice Bergen's Most Spectacular Beauties List

I remember Anne Bancroft was one of the most spectacular beauties. Gray hair. No face work. Drop-dead gorgeous. Nigella Lawson, whom I just had dinner with, is a knockout. My old friend Ali MacGraw is one of the all-time great-looking women. Diane Sawyer is – even after years of getting up at 3:30 AM and getting no sleep – simply stunning. Go figure. And women today are beautiful into their 70s. Jane Fonda looks INSANELY great. Gloria Steinem. I don’t even count the young ones. But truly, chicks rule.

Liz Smith Remembers a 'Simply Gorgeous' Elizabeth Taylor

I think it was Elizabeth Taylor back at the launch of her perfume ads and when she married Larry Fortensky. She was approaching 60 but she was simply gorgeous.

Joan Ganz Cooney Was Struck by Catherine Zeta-Jones's Beauty

When Al Gore was running for president, Tina Brown and Harry Evans gave a party for him. When I walked into their living room, the first person I saw was Catherine Zeta-Jones. For a moment I couldn’t move. She was the most beautiful woman I’d ever seen. Needless to say, it was hard to focus on Al Gore after seeing such a sight.

I thought I hadn’t seen any famous women in person, but remembering more fully now, I have seen Sissy Spacek and Jessica Lange in person (at a film festival). They’re both beautiful, but I was most shocked by Sissy Spacek. I’ve never found her very attractive on film, but in person she was gorgeous. Her skin is just luminous.

For nonfamous people, the most beautiful person I’ve seen in person is my best friend, named Helen. Her ethnicity is half-Hakka Taiwanese and half-European American. Physically she’s very beautiful, but the intelligence and humor in her eyes is what really kicks it up several notches.

On a brisk autumn day in 1967, I was walking along East 57th Street, just off Fifth Avenue in New York, when a slim woman in a tan trench coat brushed my elbow as she strode past. "So sorry, dear," I heard her say in a low voice, and there was Greta Garbo, scarfed in Hermes, her collar popped up, and dark glasses hiding her eyes, but the bone structure, the elegant carriage and the perfect lips - yes, that was some beauty! More recently, I had an opportunity to meet Maya Angelou, and was mesmerized by her deep, powerful voice and her wide, sympatico smile. Mostly, it was her eyes, though, that made her so beautiful to me. They are still shining with optimism, and that seems to make her the loveliest of women - as, I think, it does for all of us. So keep your spirits up, wOwers!

Love your Garbo story!  Thanks for sharing it.

Greta Garbo is definitely on my list, along with Gene Tierney, Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Ingrid Bergman, Audrey Hepburn, Lauren Bacall, Claudia Cardinale, and more recently, Iman, Juliette Binoche and Julia Ormond.  Natalie Portman has a unique yet distinct beauty as well.

The most beautiful woman I know personally?  My mom.  Simple, petite, rarely wears makeup, stays physically fit - best of all, her heart and spirit are as beautiful as she is.

I could name hundreds of beautiful women I’ve been taken with over the years……….of celebrities from the past I absolutely adored Susan Hayworth…….not just her looks but the energy she emitted.

But by far the most beautiful women I’ve personally seen is My Mother.

She was of French and American Indian Descent.

No matter where she traveled in Europe or the Middle East people thought she was a Native to what ever Country she was visiting.

My sister and I were watching old Family Movies this past week, it got to be hilarious, because every few seconds either she or I would comment…

Oh my gosh, wasn’t Mom beautiful……or look how cute she was there.

She looked like a Movie Star when she was in her late teens and twenties.

My sister and I also agreed we wished we had gotten a little more of her beauty.

Even when she died at 94, she was still a beautiful woman……..she only looked like a 75 year old.  Her hair had turned to Silver and she had very few wrinkles (no botox or surgery) just blessed by nature

She started out in life being cute as a bug………attractive young girl, pretty teenager…strikingly beautiful woman in her 20’s…………stayed that way right up to the end.

But More than that she had the most wonderful personality of any human I have ever known………..she never said a bad word about anyone. Everyone who knew her loved her. I think the inner beauty radiated out so bright that she had beauty beyond the norm.

Here’s to beautiful women……..but especially to my beautiful mother Cosia.  (she even had a cute name) everyone called her Cozy…………

For me, it was Susan Hayward.  I thought she was just gorgeous, and I always wished I looked like her.  She died much too young.

Rho,

I mentioned Susan Hayward, but until I just read your post I had forgotten that I copied her

Hair do………..I loved the way she wore her hair.

Ilona Massey.  Do you remember her?  She was spectacular and completely natural in every way.

Lisolette Neumann, professional golfer from Europe.  I was going to say Candice Bergen, but then I read ‘that you’ve actually seen’.  Then I remembered I did not care, so Candice Bergen, and I might see her, particularly if she becomes a professional golfer or runs for governor of Texas.

Peace and grace

besides the reflection i see in the mirror every morning?..take it easy ladies—just kidding of course..my daughter and then it would have to be megan fox—although i’m not sure she’s as pretty on the inside..with her latest comments—it’s obvious she has some serious growing up to do

Meryl Streep is beautiful in person. And I recently met Shelia Hancock and she is just as beautiful in person as you see her on tv. She may be 76, but she looks amazing :)

P.S. Why is no one saying Candice? She’s beautiful!

Yawn - what an inane question for our group. (It revealing that a male grabbed the keyboard). No more, please.

And … what about the blind. Are there then no beautiful people?
