Whoopi Goldberg on the Best (Chanel No. 5) and Worst (Burnt Hair) Scents
Chanel No. 5. I was a little kid, and I don’t know who was wearing it, but I felt safe. Unpleasant smell – smell of hair burning. I had a little too much to drink, my hair was very long — VERY LONG — and I attempted to stoke the fire in the fireplace, hence I learned that smell was not good.

Chanel No. 5 is so classic it has become iconic of an age. I love it.
You got that right about burning hair. Yeesh.
DeBurca, dahling, Georgio is too heavy. Makes No. 5 smell like eau de toilette.
Believe me, dahling, if you stand in an elevator with a woman who is wearing it, you’ll KNOW.
(Best) the air in Ireland
(Worst) funeral flowers
I would love that. We have not gone very far in the last few years because we were never sure when my son would be home on leave. His leave dates would always be changed, so we kept to California or wherever he was stationed, but I’ve got the urge to go and have had it for a long time. Ireland would be a great first stop. I also miss London. The great thing is the kids have a good time there - the love it. My oldest has been to France with a travel/study group in high school, but they have all been asking about Ireland.
Someone told me a long time ago that if you have a certain amount of Irish blood you can get an Irish Passport which makes it easier to travel. That didn’t sound plausible to me, but I know I could check it out with the Irish Embassy.
How long did you live in Ireland?
I lived in Ireland for a year. I’ve travelled there almost yearly since 99.
It used to be if you had a Grandparent from Ireland that you could apply for an Irish passport (you needed proof, like copies of the Grandparent’s birth cert, etc.). I’m not sure if they have changed that because they did tighten up immigration during the Celtic Tiger years when they were getting inundated with immigrants both legal and illegal.
Regarding passports; that sounds more plausible. Darn, I don’t have a grandparent from Ireland. They came a long time ago - I think my mother was 4th generation here. Her great great grandparents came over a long time ago. I think they went through Canada and then came down and settled in Michigan. Both sides of her family were Irish, the Harts, the Foxes, and the Ashes. As a child I was always reminded that I was half Irish, and so were about half the other kids in the neighborhood. LOL
Ireland must be a home away from home for you. What took you there in the first place?
