Think Up at wowOwow: The Executive Intern Program

By The Staff at wowOwow.com

Today we’re kicking off wowOwow’s Think Up initiative with a big story on NBC’s "Today" show about our Executive Intern program. Since we first reported on it last week, this project has garnered attention from all over, including a spot on NBC’s "Today" show, a big write-up in the Los Angeles Times, a story on "Inside Edition," an interview on National Public Radio … and more are being planned. (Click here for our story on the Executive Intern program.)

DON’T BE AFRAID. Think Up will be found on this site. We are building it, working night and day to bring you help — lots of help. The Executive Intern program is but one initiative. We hope to present hundreds of others: how to find jobs, how to find money, how to think positively about your lives, your children’s lives, where the resources are, where to find volunteers, how to be volunteers, what the best ideas to get this economy on the right path are. Women — wOw women like you — are the ones who can do it.

Yes You Can!

Here are two ways to get involved:

I’m heartened to see the spot on the Today Show this morning. I have been searching for a job since being RIF’d (that’s reduction in force, for the uninitiated). I have found many jobs that are of great interest to me and I would be thrilled to take an intern position where I could make a strong contribution in return for adding even more tools to my toolbox. Unfortunately, all the advertisements I’ve run into say a requirement is the candidate is a 2009 graduate. Is this a sanctioned age discrimination?

That is great I found you. My two son’s 80,000 dollar tuitions and loosing more than 60% on their 529; making me to go back to work and start learning new ways in my former computer field.

I was just watching the Today Show and thought that is a wonderful idea and hope more employers will catch on to us mature women and what we have to offer a company. It will open new doors to us and something meaningful for everyone involved. I am going to take the inichitive to reach to some employers I have sent resumes to & convince them to take me on as an intern in these hard times. I am currently umemployed and you have inspired me to take action.

Thank you so much for us mature gals for this web site.

Karen - Working at home on my own computer on my own time has saved me. I’m into a very unusual group of people, and the activity is helping others and myself as well. If you’d llike to hear more, just email me, and I’d be happy to tell you.

I’d also suggest if you know a talent that others might benefit from, sign yourself up to teach it.

I went to a Community course for Secret Shopper. I’m also looking into taking a course on Illustrator and Photoshop through my Community center.

Some people go more further out and join Second Life (a chat program that interacts with people world wide) and teaches courses they charge by Linden dollars that they turn around and change back into cash.

The thing is, the world is your oyster.  Look into creating a community group of people and form a knowledge party.

If AVON can gather people to buy in a time when you can buy in stores, but you go to people’s homes that can’t get out.  Imagine how you can take education to those who are homebound and not computer or internet literate that are wanting to learn?

In the depression times people would trade, work, or form co-ops.

Look to see where you’re strengths are. Look outside, the community shows in its own ways its needs.

Some people might be too proud to ask for help, but if you see your neighbors lawn needing mowing, help out your fellow neighbor.

We have Neighborhood Watches for protection.  Why not a Neighborhood Co-Op for Higher Education where you make yourselves all interns and teachers that you can put what you learn on your resume and give you a mental pat on the back for finding a new avenue of either making revenue or higher learning that all could benefit from.

On http://www.w3.org is what colleges use for INTRO to HTML.

Use your knowledge of the web to learn more about the different fields you work in.  There is an ORACLE website out there for understanding more about the product ORACLE.  No cost, just your time in looking it up.  Test yourself.

If you question a website, you can learn more about who owns it by going to http://www.checkdomain.com  and look up where they are out of, sometimes it might send you to GODADDY.com, or register.com, but remember, use your knowledge and interests to reach out to new avenues.

Keep in mind though, in these times that areas like programming they are more and more outsourcing to other countries where they can save money within companies, so just learn as much as you can in the wide spectrum of your field of interest.

I wish you all the best.

Jean, you have some really good suggestions there. I’m starting to do something like that. I’m now working three jobs, one is the publishing I’ve been doing for years, the other two are on the internet. I found a program that helps people gain money and helps others at the same time. I think it’s great to put it out for out-of-work people to begin to work at home until the country gets back on its feet. This program also keeps the money IN the country instead of outsourcing. My backside is a little numb at the end of the day, but it’s worth it.

  Patricia,

Great suggestions once again.  What is the program that helps people gain money and helps others at the same time?

If possible I would like to know.  Thank you..

Hi Patrice:  What exactly are you doing online at home that helps people gain money.  I am newly divorced and don’t have a college degree and need to learn something new I can be proud of and be successful.  Any info would be greatly appreciated.  I am so thankful I saw this website on the Foxnews channel this morning.

I appreciated the acknowledgement of the more mature unemployed to be considered for an internship.  Having worked at a college, many have the perspcetive (including myself) that internships are for those still in college or just out of college.  How else are the 40+ workers suppose to enhance their already packed resumes?

I would like to see a seed money program for women with business ideas that could be implemented with minimal costs. These business proposals must be able to make money right away as opposed to being a long term commitment. A hand up rather than a hand out that the women could either repay or pass on to help another person get started.

I just watched the clip on the Today Show and I’m excited at the prospect of the internship program…even if I can’t participate.

Yes, WE CAN!!!  We have to!

I have been out of the job market for a little over 4 years now, I got laid off from a Mortgage company shortly before my daughter was born 4 years ago.  I went back to school and retrained as a Medical assistant, well I finished back in Oct 08, the economy tanked and I cannot get a job, everyone wants experience.  I did do an internship, but that is not enough, when there is one job, and 200 applicants with more experience then me.  Would it be possible to put on my resume willing to repeat internship? Now it has been months since I trained and my last interview was in January..help.. I am continuing to go to school since I cannot seem to get a job, trying for Radiology, but there is a waiting list for that-Ugh!!!! What to do?  I have nine years in Mortgage, and various types of offices everything from payroll, to ar/ap to purchasing…but still no job
